In this thread we will focus on all things Duck Basketball related. From recruiting to news on suspensions or awards. If no game threads are made for the Duckies then we can do that here as well.
Stud pass first PG Dominic Artis has committed to Oregon Artis is a 4* PG that played on the same AAU teams as current Duck basketball savior, 5* SG Jabari Brown
iirc one of the concerns with Altman when he was hired, was recruiting. Seems to me that those questions are being answered, and then some
Altman felt like a letdown to me at the time because, well, let's be honest here. He was hardly the top choice, and seemed like more of an afterthought after some of the big names (remember the Tom Izzo fantasy?) weren't interested. I also wondered how he could recruit at a bigtime level, because while he had nice teams at Creighton, those teams were made up of players who would be mid-tier talent in the Pac-10/12. All I can say is, I'm glad I was wrong about the recruting, because after watching just a few games last year, it was obvious that Altman was a much, much better coach than Big Ern ever was. I'm excited about this season, and really am expecting an NIT bid, with the NCAAs still a bit out of reach.
The Ducks are going to be a very fast team. If they can lock down some big men(maybe Arik Armstead? ) we'll be a contender to win the Pac-12.
Big men are probably going to be fewer and farther between for the Ducks. Teams that tend to play this 40 minutes of hell style don;t attract dominant big men often. It will be a lot of mining for diamonds in the rough. IMO
Kent is probably still a better recruiter, until proven otherwise. But, Altman is a much better in game coach. I suppose anything is better than roll the ball out there and play type ball, which was all Ernie Kent was about. He'd recruit some shooters and tell them to just fire away.
He's probably close right now in the recruiting part....isn't he? did Kent ever pull a 5*? Especially an out of state one? Did he ever have a top 20 recruiting class? I'm not trying to be a jerk, I really don't know.
holy crap just looked it up.. that was a hell of a class. Hairston, Leunen, Oguchi, and Taylor http://rivals.yahoo.com/basketballr...4/oregon-60;_ylt=AuQBO0Bj8ZEPOGZIcPKYGgDWO5B4 sucks Oguchi didnt pan out.
Ernie didn't have Matt Court do sell, though. I think Altman's two classes are on par with how Ernie recruited. Also, to answer the 5* question, wasn't Malik Hairston a 5* recruit? I remember worrying that he'd only stay for a year at the time.
Fully agree. That was my #1 concern. But I think he's done nicely given where we are and that our program isn't near elite. Also, even though it was a joke of a post season tournament, winning it (can't recall the name of it) showed to me he had coaching ability as well.
Hairston was a 5 star. Brooks and Dunigan were borderline 5 star recruits and burger boys. Taylor and Humphrey were highly sought after 4 stars. Ridnour, Jackson and Leunen were all top 100 recruits.
Rid was Mickey D's as well, and Freddie Jones was also a Top 100 recruit after he blew up at the Nike Camp before his senior season at Barlow.
