That vessel certainly is beautiful. And yeah, 4 ply is exactly what we made. We got time and a half for those projects because there could be nooooooooooo flaws and that took a lot of work and stoppage time on the line to orchestrate.

The MarAzul is more that just a 4 ply layup of wood though, it is truly a composite of wood, Epoxy, Aramid, Carbon, S-Glass, E-Glass, fiber, and Steel.

I can imagine. I definitely perused through your thread dedicated to the boat, but I honestly can't fathom actually crafting that thing. Tis on a different level than what I can comprehend. Cheers!

100' shorter but I think the Cosmo has made a bigger impact than the Park Ave. Tower:

Let's have a contest. Just mentioned to a friend about Nelson Algren"s famous quote about Chicago. That it's like "loving a woman with a broken nose." So forum members, what is loving Portland like....... if you love this city, that is.

    "New Portland"

The city is booming and a lot don't like the change. Hipsters are crying gentrification. It's turning into Los Angeles. These are the NIMBY's that stall projects - one high-rise is currently on its way to the Supreme Court because it blocks their views from their 6-floor condo building in the Pearl. Maybe the burbs will fit them better.

With the urban growth boundary you can't build out - you have to build up.

I love it. Downtown is the next to boom. The Ankeny Blocks concept:

The Goodman's aren't messing around - projected cost: $1.5 billion.

Over $1billion is already underway for OHSU's SoWa campus.

I don't know.... If they can keep the rough aesthetic of the town and maintain the current unique landmarks, aesthetically, then fine. But how many jobs will the planned growth add to the people already here and will they maintain those firms? I remember Denver in '99 after the tech boom and the place was like a ghost town. I am more concerned about the growing homeless population in this town. I mean the lack of affordable housing is so bad that the mayor is diverting funds from other projects. I know people working in Portland living in rest stops but just happy they have jobs. They need to at least find a temporary housing solution in the Multnomah County Area.

This. Housing prices , including rentals, have sky rocketed over the past couple of years. Affordable rent is absolutely gone unless you want to live east of 82nd. It is driving a lot of good people out. It is driving a lot of interesting and artistically minded people out. That needs to change or portland will become just like any other random city in the US instead of something fun and unique.

That's tricky - the housing shortage is a problem. A huge problem. IIRC 60% of the housing (high density) going up right now is luxury.

I know a lot or high density projects are in the pipeline but I don't know how much of that is affordable.

SoWa? Pearl? West End? Highly unlikely. Even NEP (N.Williams Ave) and SE are becoming unaffordable. It's a lot like how San Francisco is now in terms of prices.

Gentrification or not - SE/NE are becoming nice areas though.

Well then the plight of the homeless are going to become a bigger problem, esp. the well being of the severely mentally ill. Last time I checked it was more than a year to find apartments-style housing if you were under the Disabled/Section 8 type classification in the Multnomah County Area.... My guess is they will put up Dignity Village somewhere, but the NIMBY'S will be against that. They will have to address the problem or it will get worse and worse.

All of this is one of the reasons I had to get out of portland for a while. I would call my current time in Florida a sabbatical. I was living on 27th and se Belmont for the past few years and shared a two bedroom apartment for a total of 1040 a month split two ways. When I moved 3 weeks ago, they had just arbitrarily raised the rent to 1400 a month with no improvements. Completely insane.

    The new courthouse:

Given the location this will have a bigger impact on the skyline than PAW or even the Cosmo.
