Just another benefit of Las Vegas^^^^^^ When you build on flat open space you can lay the roads out evenly in a nice grid. Even when the freeway is somewhat backed up you can take surface streets everywhere.
Portland is pretty much exactly a grid, aside from a couple areas. I've always taken surface streets, but then again I have never lived in the suburbs.
Not even remotely similar. You can drive from the extreme west side of Las Vegas to the farthest east side in a straight line. Google map Portland and then do las vegas. Las vegas looks like a crossword puzzle.
