"Of course, Whiteside is not without his faults. He’s not a fantastic rebounder for someone with his size and athleticism."

I'm confused. He was 3rd in the entire league and only played 29 minutes per game. What the heck are they talking about? The rest of the article is solid but that point right there makes me wonder what the author was thinking?

Ya it's funny. More than a few NBA people have made that statement. I haven't seen enough of him to argue one way or the other

It's just a percentage thing. HW is younger and has less wear and tear on his body. Both of these players have the possibility of blowing up - in both a good way and a bad way. Bone-on-bone has been used to describe Howard, but HW is not without injury problems.

If we get either or these two, I'm happy because I think the team will be significantly better. Not only are these very good players, but they provide exactly what we need.

Unfortunately the word stable is a little subjective but if that was case Im not sure how in the world he would be comfortable signing with the Lakers

How many organizations does that really rule out?

If true, that increases Portland's chances of getting him.

I was fearing he would sign with LA, but now I guess that's looking bleak.

Yep. Whiteside was #2 in the league in Rebounding Percentage at 23.1%. Only Drummond was better at 24.5%.

Note: Ed Davis had a Rebounding Percentage of 19.3%. Mason Plumlee (our starting center) was at 16.3%

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Whiteside is indeed a 'fantastic' rebounder.

Whiteside is a bada$$, I love the kids story overall. Not a splashy comparison but I remember when the Blazers had Theo Ratliff, I swear he blocked everything that came into the paint, such a valuable asset to have on your defense.

Sure, but would you give Theo Ratliff a max contract?

Theo Ratliff was an all-star in 2001, on the team that lost in the finals. He lead the league in blocks in 2001 with 3.7.

Given that comparison, here are their side by side stats (at the same ages, 26):

    WhitesideRatlif.jpg

Whiteside looks a step above in the majority of the categories (except of course assists). The stat that jumps out to me is the TRB%. Ratliff at 13.4%, and Whiteside at 23.1%.

To answer your question, if Ratliff was a free-agent in 2001, he may not get the max, but I'm guessing a lot of teams would be tempted. Whiteside, on the other-hand, is looking firmly in the max camp.

If he wants stability he should go to Portland. Help them win a title and he will be set for life. At the very least he won't end up homeless like Delonte West, somebody will always help him out.

I'm not really a fan of bringing in Whiteside I know he put up very good numbers this year and looks good, but he also had to take a 4 year break from the NBA to get his act together and has only had the one good season. My concern is the maturity issues that pushed him out could still be there and he might not end up producing at the level he did last year.

Tell me who you like better, that's easier to obtain. DHo is NOT easier to obtain.

Sometimes a player need a chance Whiteside didn't get that chance until Miami and we give player a chance to excel in there play. Look at Harkless and Aminu last year when they final got a chance to play regular they excel with there opportunity.
