I’ve only heard positive things about Keegan so I was intrigued by this podcast, worth a listen to this bit starting around 11min. https://open.spotify.com/episode/7n...&context=spotify:collection:podcasts:episodes
Brief summary: Sam Ferris, Locked On NBA Big Board Older for his class...the commentator values youth. Likes the on-the-court product, but has him at #11. Doesn't think he is a defensively versatile wing. Thinks he can only defend the '4'. Offensively, Iowa tilts their offense towards one star player (like Garza the year before). So many post ups in college. Used his size and strength advantage. Even his drives, really ended up in post-ups. His attacks take a while because he isn't that athletic. Doesn't think he works as a primary offensive player. Dismisses the steals and blocks and doesn't really think they translate at the next level. Difference between Freshman and Sophomore year - couldn't beat out Garza as a main player, or didn't get reps as it was a vet team. The offensive production was really good, but imagine Paulo Banchero at age 22. How much would he dominate?
I don't disagree with any of those points. But I do think he could eventually be Tobias Harris good. Which is not horrible unless they pay him like Tobias.
While Keegan is the most ready at the position, I'd rather go all in on the best defensive guy we can get. The top 4 of the playoffs are the best defensive teams in the league - we should go all in on defense with this pick unless a guy like Sharpe is available. Sochan seems like he can bring something to this team we don't already have.
we need two way players who can't get played off the floor cuz they suck at either end. Look at what happened to Thybulle in the playoffs. This team has maybe two two-way players who won't get attacked mercilessly by defenses. And also guys who won't be liabilities like Aminu/Harkless/Matisse, etc. If they're inept offensively, teams will center their defenses on letting these guys shoot. Unless Sochan is someone like Draymond, we still have a glaring need for scorers above 6'5 as well. Bottom line, considering where we are in our trajectory and team build, we just need talent period. We can pick and choose particular skills later on in free agency. It's why I just want BPA in the draft.
this kid is just smart. can read defenses well. maximizes his motion/effort, and scores with ease. I think he can even work really well as a small ball 4 or even 5 in some lineups running pick and pop plays like Aldridge did. And with his ability to score off the bounce, he would give us a weapon that Dame has never ever played with. i really hope some of these teams ahead of us overthink the selection and talk themselves into others like Sharpe/Griffin/Daniels.
he knows how to use what he has to be one of the leading scorers in the NCAA while having historic efficiency numbers. While he doesn't automatically jump off the page with crazy hops, his numbers speak for themselves. he kinda reminds me of older paul pierce, tbh. you wouldn't mistake Pierce for Vince Carter, but he was just as effective in the NBA, if not more.
Murray seems like a nice piece to a really good team, as long as that team already has 2 stars with one of them being a wing
It's very interesting that the Magic are working out Murray and already met with him during the combine. Hm.
It would take a lot for Orlando to trade back to 7 for Keegan Murray. Maybe a 3 way trade where we end up with #3. Houston jumps -> #1. But it surely is intriguing that the Magic seems so high on him
