In America, when you don't crack down on crime, the undesirables in society just go wild, which is what we've been seeing.
Americans aren't different than other people in the world. That's why the whole slavery and abusing Chinese laborers is frowned upon. Human nature is human nature. America's education, healthcare, and judicial systems are fucked up. That's why we have high rates of crime even though we jail a larger portion of our population than any other country in the world. 25% of the world's prison population resides right here in the US. We're less than 5% of the world population. Jail doesn't work. It has never worked. Our crime rates are still lower now than they have been in our past. Because we used to have a healthy middle class. But crime rates are on the rise because we are shrinking our middle class and pushing more of them into poverty (because of the fucked up systems referenced above).
Yes, Americans are different from other people in the world. Every country's people are way different. Its the result of hundreds or even thousands of years of societal expectations and norms. People in Japan, for instance, are much more respectful of others. You just don't get that here in the US.
No, that's not how human nature works. What you are describing is culture. Human nature trumps culture every time. Desperate people ignore culture in favor of survival. Everywhere in the world.
Its not even desperation for many of these criminals. Its just what they know, and they don't give a fuck about stealing or assaulting innocent people. They should be totally written out of society. Lock em away and throw away the key. Or even better, put a bullet in them and save everyone the headache.
Policy requires careful consideration. Without careful consideration you get fucked up situations that are inefficient and ineffective. Like the systems I've pointed out. You are being emotional and flippant in your analysis of the situation, so you are not reaching logical conclusions. You aren't alone. Unfortunately much of our population views things the same way. This is how authoritarians gain power.
We are this way because we see what's happening outside. Criminals running wild. Being released and then doing it again and again. Powerless to do anything about it. Society is crumbling right before our eyes. Beautiful cities are turning into festering shitholes of crime. Fuck "careful consideration". Enforce the damn laws and lock criminals away for a long time.
What we are seeing is a result of locking "criminals" away. But I agree. Need to enforce the laws we have. Unfortunately police aren't interested in doing that unless they get to be judge and jury as well... So we'll deal with the crime until we want to support logical policies which have been proven to work everywhere they've been enacted.
Good. They just need to make sure they are shooting the bad guys if they use them and not bystander children.
So the thug that knocks out an asian lady then casually walks away no fear with his $200 sneakers and $300 coat on. I realize that a % of people that are struggling revert to crime to survive, which is still wrong, but most thugs criminals that are thief's, rapist, gangsta's do it because they like to0. Enforce laws and come down hard on them. If they show sincere willingness to change then, help them help themselves. But if they dont have any respect for people or the law, treat them as hardened criminals.
Housing First would make this so much easier to solve. Dangerous people would no longer be able to hide among the masses. Crime would drop SIGNIFICANTLY.
