Mags, you install Mavericks yet? I'll probably give it a week or so, just in case there are any bugs. I don't have any complaints about my laptop at the moment, so I'd be pissed if the update fucked anything up. I can say that tabbed finder windows is something that I'll find handy. Can't believe it took so long for those.

I'm running mavericks. It's perfectly fine. If you have two monitors/screens, it's a huge upgrade. If you have one and apple tv, you can use your TV as a 2nd screen.

My only gripe so far is that my iWorks won't upgrade to the new version. I got it preinstalled (cost me $99) on my laptop and it's looking like they want to ding me another $60 to buy it again.

I have installed it, but haven't looked at it yet. I was at my son's baseball practice.

Did the update. It's fast on my Macbook. Hey Denny, how can I use my AppleTv to use my big screen as a monitor?

Weird, I installed it on my older Mac mini and it stopped the usual lag I received.

Just ordered a new 13" MacBook Pro. Maxed the thing out so it'll be here around Halloween. Last time I maxed out an Apple pro laptop, it lasted eight years before it got too slow to use. I'm hoping I get that much from this one.

Settings -> Displays -> Show mirroring options in the menu bar when enable (checked)

Then you'll see the airplay icon in the top bar all the time.

From that, you can choose an Apple TV and then you can tell it to extend your desktop.

Also, the OS does a bunch of optimization for a while when you first install it. It tells you that you may experience degraded performance until it's done.

Launching Apple Mail the first time requires a full rebuild of your mail index, has to download all the headers from your mail stored at google; can take a while.

Otherwise, I'm seeing no performance issues.

I still have a top of the line Mac Pro tower at work that I purchased in 05. Still works today! Waiting for the new mac pro's to come out and I will upgrade to the top of the line again. None of my PC friends can say they have a windows machine that performs well 8 years after they purchased theirs.

How would a 15" be an upgrade from a 17"? Plus I have to pay apple $100 a year for their OS?

Do these Macs give you a handjob I don't know about or something?

The last 3 Apple OS upgrades were $29, $19, and $0.

    What's better, a 4K 15" screen or a 1080P 17" one?

What do you use your computer for? The Mac Pro is damn nice and all, but the base 6 core model costs 4k....so maxed out will probably break 10k. I could see studios picking them up or reaaaaaaaaly successful photographers, but for everyone else it seems like massive overkill. But, its your money. If you have the money and want it, go get it. If you want to buy one for me (even the lowly quad core one, I won't complain.

No windows new model is a yearly subscription of $100. Apple is free.

Buy a 65" cheap TV and a 55" Samsung high end LED and tell me which is better.

What's inside the computer is what you pay for. The screen size isn't what makes a computer good. Sorry

I use it for music and work. It is absolutely still overkill; but I would rather have too much power; than not enough.

Wow you love your techy stats. There is no 4K content. The best video’s I have are 1080p. Heck on TV’s there isn’t even a benefit to 1080p until you get to 50”. On smaller TV’s 720p content on a good 720p TV looks indistinguishable to 95% of the population. Do I get a benefit of rendering sportstwo forums in 4K? For me I wanted a 17” screen so its easier on the eyes.

What Windows version has a subscription? I've never paid a yearly subscription for Windows.

What exactly is inside that makes an Apple so special? When I looked at them they had identical components to PC’s 1/3 the price. The apple OS is cool and their cases look neat but it’s a hefty premium to pay and that is the only benefit I see; their proprietary OS and their packaging. If you think its worth that premium than obviously go ahead and pay it. But its silly to act as though it’s a good value or that a 15” laptop is “only” $1999. That is a luxury item purchase.

I'm curious what model do you own? I would like to compare apples to apples. Putting a V8 6.4 liter engine on a shopping cart won't give you the performance than an engineered Dodge Charger.

On a 4K screen, you'd be able to have full size (not full screen, but plenty big) browser windows open next to each other.

If you copy/paste from one window to another, that's a pretty big benefit.

And you absolutely do notice higher resolution on computer displays. At 300 pixels/inch, you are literally displaying printer quality on your screen.

You can judge for yourself by comparing the displays of a retina macbook vs. a non-retina one (same 15" or 13" screen size on both) at an Apple Store. The difference is HUGE.
