Ah man dont be...one of the reasons things are sideways now is because of freedoms we have, and can be both a positive and detriment at any point in time. And Hoover should have been judged excluding the depression, I expect some of you think. And maybe in some ways that would have been fair - Hoover wasn't entirely responsible for the depression by any stretch. But that aint the way people think. No. My kind's rights are being curtailed by the current administration, and various states, emboldened by the president. I live in more actual, physical danger now than I did in May, 2016. My kind are now very loudly not welcome here, and that environment did not exist in 2015 when I came out. I'm very lucky to live in Portland, but even the suburbs feel less safe.
I don't know if embarrassed is the right word to use. I'm not sure what word to use though, because it's kind of related to pride. And while I had no say as to where I was born (thus I'm not "proud to be an American", it was the luck of the draw), I do think there's a sense of ignominy. I'm ashamed that the government is acting the way it does, it's unAmerican. What I've been told, by foreigners, they separate the Government from the people, much in the same way when we talk about North Korea or Russia, we're disparaging the Government and not the people from the country.

My civil rights have been under relentless attacks. The environment, that I have to live in because there is no other available planet, is under attack. The courts have been packed with young white male hard right judges, not a single moderate or mainline conservative (they sometimes vote against their ideology in favor of law); hard right ideologues all pledged to oppose civil rights and all pledged to be personally loyal to Trump. They will be on the bench for 40 or 50 years. My 401(k) is shaky. All my bills have gone up but income down. And 100,000 Americans dead and counting. I am not an island, thank you John Donne. Hunger is higher, poverty higher, inequality higher, and an administration totally committed to making it worse. I am much worse off.
