In 19-20, he was with the Bulls who had the 12th rated defense despite awful personnel. Okay, not bad.

fun to think about, but the obvious realistic acquisition given these coaching connections is Serge Ibaka.

he'd be perfect for our bench with zach sidelined again

Kawhi, PG13, Pat Bev, Batum, Rondo, Ibaka... even when not fully healthy, that roster is loaded with good defenders. I would expect them to be top 3 on talent alone.

Kawhi and PG missed almost 30% of the season each. Beverly missed over half. Ibaka missed half. Rondo only played 18 games. Of course their personnel is good when healthy, but I think you’re discounting how hard it is to have guys in and out of the lineup all the time and still maintain defensive competency.

Having watch the Blazers the last few seasons, I can assure you I'm aware of the impact of an unstable lineup. Though many here seemingly do not agree with you and I that our instability (and roster makeup) was a major cause for our defensive ranking.

Either way... the Clippers shoud've been a top 3 defense (if fully healthy). Being Top 10 with their injuries seems reasonable; not great or horrible. My opinion.

Good at dapting Simmons to being a big man and making us a defensive minded roster.

Don’t really agree with that. Kawhi and George are not all league defenders anymore, at least in the regular season. Beverly has always been overrated. People thought Batum was completely washed. Either way, I’m not attributing their defensive success to Rogers, but if Rogers can at least make the players play up to their defensive potential then I’m good enough with that. Our personnel was awful, but I don’t think anyone would agree we should have been 29th awful.

You know Kawhi made his 7th all defensive team this year, right?

Fair enough, but I think his reputation is better than his actual production on that end at this point. Doesn’t change the point that Rogers has to suddenly make this roster a top 10 defense. That’s probably not possible with the current personnel. But should not be 29th.

Agreed. Without roster moves they are unlikely to be top 10. With Nurk available they should be better than 29th.

I dont know enough about Rogers or how Billups will use him to provide a solid estimation for his impact on our defensive rating next year. I hope he makes us #1 though!

Hell, if you just start Dame, Norm, DJ, RoCo and Nurk... that should be a top 15 defense.

Imagine if we got a guy who could play defense for CJ.

Here in Bellingham, I'm closer to Vancouver than Seattle, so in the Grizzlies 2nd year I tried to listen to radio games. That season, they chose Shareef #3 and Roy Rogers #22 in the 1st round. Rogers was alright, but no star. He later played for Moscow, Russia a little. Under many head coaches, he has learned much more as a coach than player.
