    Panthers fire AD Steve Pederson

Pittsburgh has fired athletic director Steve Pederson after Paul Chryst's abrupt departure for Wisconsin left the Panthers searching for their fourth football coach in four years.

Randy Juhl, vice chancellor for research conduct and compliance, will serve as Pitt's acting athletic director. Offensive coordinator Joe Rudolph will serve as interim coach for the Panthers as they prepare for the Armed Forces Bowl on Jan. 2 against Houston. Wednesday's announcements came as Chryst was being introduced as Wisconsin's coach following three seasons at Pitt.

Justin Thomas' four total TDs lead Georgia Tech over Mississippi State

Georgia Tech players hopped happily, hugged each other and danced in place. The clock had just struck midnight on New Year's Eve, so they had two things to celebrate.

Minutes earlier, the Yellow Jackets had completed a 49-34 victory over Mississippi State in the Capital One Orange Bowl.

Quarterback Justin Thomas was chosen the game's outstanding player Wednesday night after he directed an offense that totaled a Capital One Orange Bowl-record 452 yards rushing. He ran for 121 yards and three touchdowns, and threw for 125 yards and a score.

A day after losing their top offensive star and two days after a pair of defensive standouts bolted for the NFL, the Florida State Seminoles learned Thursday that they will at least keep around their special-teams ace one more season.

Kicker Roberto Aguayo will return to the Seminoles for his redshirt junior season, the school announced.

"After praying about it and talking with my parents, coaches and others I trust, I know that the best decision for me is to return to Florida State for another year," Aguayo said in the school's release. "I am more than excited to continue to build on the success we have had here at Florida State and I'm looking forward to continuing to improve next fall, to obtain my degree and to grow as a person."

Louisville Cardinals defensive end signee Devonte Fields has reached an agreement to dismiss his misdemeanor assault charge.

Fields met with prosecutors Friday and signed a memo with intent to dismiss the charge pending his completion of four anger management courses, a representative for the Tarrant County District Attorney's office confirmed to ESPN.com.

His June 17 trial date has been canceled, and Fields plans to finish his courses on June 24. The No. 2-rated junior college recruit had been charged with assault causing bodily injury to a family member, a Class A misdemeanor, after allegedly hitting an ex-girlfriend.

Bobby Petrino thinks Will Gardner will be ready for camp

Bobby Petrino delivered some good news this week for Louisville, saying that he thinks quarterback Will Gardner will be 100 percent for preseason camp in August.

That would, in theory, throw Gardner firmly into the mix to start for the Cardinals, who had three QBs taking reps this spring: Sophomore Reggie Bonnafon, redshirt sophomore Kyle Bolin and redshirt junior Tyler Ferguson.

Bonnafon and Bolin have starting experience under their belts from last season, while Ferguson sat out after transferring from Penn State.

Darkhorse candidates for ACC offensive player of the year

Our colleague Jared Shanker put together a list of the top candidates for ACC offensive player of the year last week, but we wanted to dig a bit deeper. We could easily add Marquise Williams, Brad Kaaya, Tyler Boyd and a handful of others to Shanker's list, but we're looking for legitimate sleepers here. So with that in mind, here are five off-the-radar candidates for top offensive player honors:

No. 16 Georgia Tech romps to 69-6 victory over Alcorn State

Justin Thomas played only the first quarter for No. 16 Georgia Tech in a season-opening blowout, allowing a couple of newcomers to grab the spotlight.

Freshman Marcus Marshall ran for 184 yards and two long touchdowns in his college debut, and transfer Patrick Skov scored three TDs in his first game for the Yellow Jackets, who romped to a 69-6 victory over Alcorn State on Thursday night.

Watson throws for 2 TDs, No. 12 Clemson routs Wofford 49-10

No. 12 Clemson never expected serious trouble in its opener with Wofford. The rest of the Tigers' season, though, turned a bit murky when 1,000-yard receiver Mike Williams went out with a scary neck injury.

Williams, a junior who made the all-Atlantic Coast Conference second team last fall with 57 catches and 1,030 yards, slammed into the goalpost support and sprained his neck on a 4-yard touchdown grab that started the Tigers on their way to a 49-10 victory over Wofford on Saturday.

No. 15 Georgia Tech with another blowout, beating Tulane 65-10

Paul Johnson wouldn't mind every game playing out like this.

The Georgia Tech coach watched another dominating win on Saturday, his team scoring more than 60 points for the second game in a row. Justin Thomas passed for two touchdowns and ran for a score to lead the No. 15 Yellow Jackets to a 65-10 victory over lowly Tulane.

Deshaun Watson leads No. 12 Clemson to big win over Appalachian State

Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson won't let himself or the 12th-ranked Tigers get off track, even with all-ACC receiver Mike Williams on the sideline.

Watson threw for 248 yards and three touchdowns -- two to wideoutCharone Peake -- to lead Clemson to a 41-10 victory over Appalachian State on Saturday. With Williams in a neck brace and out indefinitely with a fractured bone, Watson kept the Tigers moving forward after a sluggish first quarter.
