    Clemson surges to No. 4

Clemson has surged to its highest ranking in The Associated Press poll in 25 years after the Tigers won the biggest game of the opening weekend of the college football season.

Clemson is No. 4 in the first regular-season Top 25, following its 38-35 victory against Georgia. The Tigers, who also jumped three spots to No. 5 in the USA Today coaches poll, received one first-place vote and have their best showing in the AP poll since Sept. 12, 1988, when they were No. 3.

    Karlos Williams moves to backfield

Karlos Williams was projected as a defensive star when he arrived at Florida State as the No. 5 overall recruit in the nation in 2011, but Jimbo Fisher announced Thursday that Williams' future would be on offense.

Williams has worked the past two days at running back, Fisher said, and going forward, he expects the move to be permanent.

"He's 6-1, 232 pounds, runs a 10.5 100 meters, can catch, can run, is very natural with the ball in his hand, is physical, fast, learns," Fisher said. "He's doing a really nice job, and I think he can provide not just depth there, but he can drive some spark there."

BC defense stops Wake Forest for 24-10 win in ACC

The Boston College defense forced three turnovers and stopped Wake Forest with a pair of goal-line stands.

    Andre Williams did the rest.

The BC running back rushed 35 times for a career-high 204 yards and a touchdown -- including a final drive in which he carried the ball eight straight times to help run the last 5 minutes off the clock -- and Boston College matched its win total from last season with a 24-10 victory over Wake Forest on Friday night.

No. 4 Clemson, Tajh Boyd power past SC State

Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd's apparently a good actor, too.

"He was so dramatic. He was rolling (around) out there," said backup Cole Stoudt as he stood alongside Boyd after the fourth-ranked Tigers defeated South Carolina State 52-13 on Saturday.

Stephen Morris throws 2 TDs as Miami upsets No. 12 Florida

As Miami began to celebrate its biggest win in years, Hurricanes coach Al Golden threw his right arm skyward and sprinted over to the Florida sideline for the traditional postgame handshake.

    He offered congratulations.

He probably could have offered thanks.

Stephen Morris threw two first-quarter touchdown passes to put Miami ahead, and Florida gave the ball away on four red-zone trips to make sure the Hurricanes stayed there. Miami knocked off the 12th-ranked Gators 21-16 on Saturday, almost certainly ensuring that the Hurricanes -- dogged for the last 26 months by a still-unresolved NCAA probe -- will return to the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2010.

Jameis Winston set for home debut

Jameis Winston may be a redshirt freshman, but the Florida State quarterback is quite grounded after his aerial assault in the Seminoles' season opener.

The pressure of the spotlight had little affect on Winston, who opened his Florida State career with a near-flawless performance -- 25 of 27 for 356 yards and five touchdowns (four passing and one rushing) in a 41-13 rout of Pittsburgh on Sept. 2.

Now Winston appears calm for his first home game as No. 10 Florida State (1-0) plays Nevada (1-1) on Saturday.

Charone Peake (ACL) done for season

Clemson wide receiver Charone Peake has been lost for the season after tearing a knee ligament at practice this week.

Peake was the second-leading receiver for Clemson (2-0) with eight catches for 84 yards and a touchdown.

Tigers coach Dabo Swinney said Peake tore an ACL during a non-contact drill Tuesday and an MRI on Wednesday showed the ligament tear. Football spokesman Tim Bourret said that Peake will require surgery. Bourret said Clemson will apply for a medical redshirt so Peake won't lose a year of eligibility.

No. 10 FSU puts on show, drubs Nevada

Jameis Winston was a show-stopper early and a spectator late -- not a whole lot different from his first game.

Winston accounted for three touchdowns, Florida State's four tailbacks all scored and the 10th-ranked Seminoles routed Nevada 62-7 Saturday.

Up-tempo FSU wants to get faster

The Florida State Seminoles, who scored five touchdowns in just more than eight minutes last weekend, are looking to pick up the pace.

Jimbo Fisher believes the Seminoles' no-huddle offense can be even faster than it was during Saturday's 62-7 rout against Nevada. The goal: put opposing defenses on their heels and wear down opponents.

"Coach Fisher says it all the time, he wants to play fast," FSU left tackle Cameron Erving said. "He wants to get a lot of snaps a game on offense. As an O-line, we try to make it happen.

"We want to get a lot of snaps on offense and keep our defense off the field as much as possible. But at the same time, we're not Oregon. ... We do something, they do something different. But that's definitely in the right area. We want to be up there on the same level, at a certain speed as those teams."

Tajh Boyd tosses 3 TDs, leads No. 3 Clemson past NC State

Clemson struggled to get its offense running in high gear and spent much of Thursday night fighting to protect a slim lead. The third-ranked Tigers still did enough to stay unbeaten in the kind of game that often has slipped away in recent years.

Tajh Boyd threw for 244 yards and three touchdowns to help Clemson beat North Carolina State 26-14, winning its Atlantic Coast Conference opener on the road.

    Christian Jones, Eddie Goldman out

Florida State has suspended starting linebacker Christian Jones and defensive tackle Eddie Goldman for Saturday night's game against Bethune-Cookman, coach Jimbo Fisher announced Thursday.

Fisher said both players are suspended for a violation of team rules, but he declined to provide additional details about the incidents.

    ACC: Controversial call 'not clear'

ACC coordinator of officials Doug Rhoads said Friday that, after further review, "it is not clear" whether NC State receiver Bryan Underwood stepped out of bounds Thursday night in a controversial call that changed the momentum of the game in Clemson's 26-14 win at NC State.

Trailing 13-7 midway through the third quarter against No. 3-ranked Clemson, Underwood sprinted 83 yards untouched into the end zone, where one official signaled a touchdown.

Another official, though, whistled the play dead because he thought Underwood stepped out of bounds. Because the play was ruled dead, it was not eligible for review.

No. 8 Florida State rolls over Bethune-Cookman

Despite a 48-point win, Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher saw lots of room for improvement.

Quarterback Jameis Winston completed 10 of 19 passes for 148 yards and two touchdowns, Devonta Freeman ran for 112 yards and a touchdown to lead the No. 8 Seminoles to a 54-6 win over Bethune-Cookman on Saturday night.

Miami expects Stephen Morris to play

Miami expects Stephen Morris to play when the 15th-ranked Hurricanes visit winless South Florida on Saturday.

Morris was knocked out of Miami's 77-7 win over Savannah State in the first quarter with a lower right leg injury. It was originally thought to be a sprained ankle, though coach Al Golden said Sunday that it subsequently was diagnosed as a bone bruise.

    Clemson disciplines Martavis Bryant

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said starting wide receiver Martavis Bryant will have his playing time reduced against Wake Forest because he made throat-slashing gestures following a touchdown catch against North Carolina State last week.

Swinney said Tuesday that he was unaware of Bryant's antics until reviewing tape of the game.

Virginia Tech shuts down Georgia Tech, 17-10

Logan Thomas ran and passed for touchdowns in the first half.

Virginia Tech's defense took it from there.

Thomas shook off a sluggish start to his senior season, Virginia Tech's defense shut down Georgia Tech's proud running game and the Hokies beat the Yellow Jackets 17-10 on Thursday night.

Tajh Boyd eclipses 100 career TDs in No. 3 Clemson's rout

Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris had two words of counsel this week for Tajh Boyd: "Have fun."

It appears he got the message -- loud and clear.

Boyd threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another score, leading the Tigers to a 56-7 victory over Wake Forest on Saturday. The terrific performance made him the second Atlantic Coast Conference quarterback to account for 100 career TDs.

No. 8 Florida State uses Hail Mary to down Boston College

With a wave of his left arm, Jameis Winston motioned for Kenny Shaw to go long. With a heave by his right arm, the Florida State freshman delivered the ball in stride.

Winston threw for four touchdowns, including a 55-yard score as time expired in the first half on Saturday to help No. 8 Florida State rally from a slow start and beat Boston College 48-34.
