Maybe the lottery pick will be the shooter that is needed.

This guy is gonna help our team in more ways than people think. This is one of those "under the radar" moves that will significantly improve our team.

    Why would Thybulle opt out?

If Thybulle gets what Portland gave him even under the new CBA, I’ll be more than somewhat surprised.

I can think of only one reason why he would not and that is if he and his agent don't think he can get more money.
Whether it is true or not, they always think they can. Or maybe the same amount but on a longer contract. He does not have an injury history, but I think he would rather have a 4-year contract at the same amount than a one-year contract in case he does get hurt.

He did not choose Portland. He got traded here and then his offer was matched when he chose to go elsewhere. Who wants to play limited minutes on a team that is tanking? They all want to win and when given a chance they will leave unless they get overpaid.

While I agree he might already be overpaid, I doubt he and his agent feel that way.

Thybulle is a very specialty player. I’m a huge fan. But the market for a player like him is fairly niche—it would take a few years of a prove it deal for him to make back a single year of earnings. The rub is that his market is playoff teams, yet he is difficult to play in a playoff series (or even FIBA, as it turns out) setting.

While I agree with you, it was only last year that Dallas offered him that amount. So I would highly doubt he and his agent opt in.

His current salary is under the non-taxpayer MLE. It's not like he is making over 20 million a year. I would put money on it that he opts out....regardless of whether or not it is a good idea.

I would be shocked if he opted out—that would be very risky for a player of his ilk. The move is to opt in and then work with the team to find a spot that values him and would value his bird rights in a trade. Then he extends in his new city.

Yes, they should do that this summer. But if they don't....be prepared to be shocked.

obviously, it will depend on the market next summer

but I'm thinking that players of Tybulle's level, and age, will look more at the size of the guaranteed deal than annual salary. He'd be opting out of 11.5M, yes. But if he could sign a 4-year/35-40M deal that would expire when he's 32, that may be worth opting out of 11.5M. He could be guaranteeing 20-30M more

and that could be very attractive if he's going somewhere he wants to be...and we have evidence he really doesn't want to be in Portland

I don't know if he'll be worth that much or not. But math says that would be a starting salary of around 8-8.5M when the full-MLE should be over 14M

Likewise, for you—the rule in the NBA is take the money and figure it out later. Thybulle surely knows this.

    Thybulle opt out ??

Will a force from beyond call upon Matisse to take an 8 million dollar paycut to play for a contending team ??

Much like Calwell Pope this year, his agent will know ahead of time if some team wants him before he opts out.
And as Wisenheimer mentioned, it will be more about the length of the contract, and total guaranteed money.

Now I do think a lot will depend on how he is used this year......and if they intend to tank again. Players hate tanking even more than most fans. If the money is even close somewhere else why wouldn't he bolt? Although my guess is he will waive his no-trade clause if he can be traded this year, so we probably will never know.

take a quick peek at the MLE market from this offseason. it was tough sledding for a lot of guys: tyus jones and gtj, for two (neither of whom opted out of their respective deals).

Thanks. My Youtube feed provided the following, no English translation, but it's OK to watch, the beach training looks cool.

I did love me some Petro. Obviously, Deni can not shoot like Drazen, but is much bigger and a better defender. Can't wait to see how he fits with the others. I think/hope his passing will benefit Ayton.
