Being able to build a "solid deep team" has very little to do with Hank's cap hit and a lot to do with the GM being competent. If next year the team blows it'd be dumb to say "oh, it's b/c Henrik has a $8.5M cap hit, it goes to show you can't win with a goalie making that much". Besides, weren't many here saying before the PIT series that we liked our depth, anyways?
I would move Stepan, Kristo and a 1st for Kesler and sign Stastny in place of Richards. Then slot Hagelin on the 4th line with Miller(for a year) and Lindberg. They have to upgrade at C to compete with the upper echelon teams. I wont get into the pp dman stuff but thats an issue too. Signing Diaz for another year would be a smart low cost move. We'll see where Mcilrath ends up but id say its 50/50 he works out. They do need more toughness on D though.
The best thing we have going for us is the cap should rise the next few seasons giving us extra space. It will go up 5 or 6 mill next season. Sure it will go up at least 1 or 2 mill each season after that. So we should get help from that POV. And BTW...I am 1000% cool with us re-signing Hank. So that is not my point at all. My point is that's a large cap hit for a goalie. The highest paid in the league by 1.5 per season. That is a big gap. We'll see if that works out well for us. That is the point.
That's a little too rich for Kesler, but i would trade for him. Given the new GM they're there as trade partners.
There you go again man. If we are bad next season it won't be because Hank has an 8.5 mill per cap hit. And his cap hit does not take affect until next season, so this seasons team means zero. Look, I know your thing is everything is dumb. I think you have used that word 5 times alone on this page, but if you cannot see that it is at least something to keep an eye on (can you build a deep SC winning type team with a goalie at that huge cap hit number, 1.5 more than any other goalie, when his production thus far is not equal to that big a gap between him and the next goalie) then I don't know what to say man.
For a top 3 goalie an extra 1m give or take will not hurt a franchise if they simply manage the rest of the 62m correctly.
As for the Canucks. I also like Burrows, but not @ 4.5M. That's a terrible contract. Would be more interested in Bieksa.
Does no one factor in that Kesler said no deal to us already? If he says no...how do we trade for him? Unless your plan is we can convince him to come here? Maybe, but certainly not something we should be writing down as a strong possibility given the fact he already said no Rangers.
# 1 it is 1.5 mill. And # 2 why when the other top goalies make a lot less. That's just the way it is. Again we will see if it becomes an issue. I had NO ISSUE with re-signing Hank...I wanted 8 max, but I had no issue doing what we needed to do to get him back under 9 mill max...so if it does become an issue I was wrong as well, but it at least has to make you say we'll see considering he is # 1 by far in terms of cap hit, yet has not really won much in the NHL (which I don't blame him for BTW). Most experts would have Hank 3 or 4 in the goalie rankings, most likely 3, not # 1 which he is clearly being paid like. That's just reality.
I think Stepan and a 1st is a good base then maybe tweak the prospect or extra pick. Yeah i think both coaches would welcome both players and with Van. rebuilding some the 1st gives them another solid prospect.
KESLER SAID NO TO THE RANGERS ALREADY. My lord please act like that happened. He may change his mind, but please let's not act as if the offer is the only gating issue.
Right, and it is a tad much, but when you have Richards value at 2m less than what he makes and Nash looking a little overpaid i guess it magnifies the overall thing.
If Nash comes back next year and has another miserable playoffs, we can all say "see? i knew that extra $1.5M was going to be an issue"
Great question 31. Not sure if I have that answer. Not sure if it will be a black and white answer. Maybe if we are lacking a good 3rd pair or solid 3rd line. Not sure how we can judge that. Maybe we see if any other goalie even gets close cap hit wise. If not again maybe that is a sign. As for Richards in comparison, who cares. He is gone this summer. And he is overpaid also. And at this point Nash is clearly overpaid. But that doesn't mean two wrongs make a right. Just because player A is overpaid doesn't mean player B should be.
And it is stuff like this 31 that makes you who you are man. ONCE AGAIN you cannot help being a rude a**. It truly does amaze me. This guy is dumb. That guy is dumb. You are so rude man. I just don't get you. You must have a miserable life bro. That's exactly what I said...you are a little child 31. And you will never change. I have given up hope on that front.
I thought he ended up saying he would come to NY right before they kept him? Maybe not but i thought that was reported. Guess we'll see if anything transpires there but theyd be smart to inquire again.
No, what I saw was he said no NY. So that is something that at least needs to be smoothed over if we were to target Kesler, who I think would be a good fit at the right price.
If they actually have a well built team, which is a big question with Sather picking players, then an extra 1m or 2 on the cap wont even matter. I dont think it does for a player of value of HL, it stands out for a Richards last year and even this one. Hes gone anyway so that wont matter.
