Five months ago, former Northern Illinois quarterback Jordan Lynch finished third in the Heisman race behind Jameis Winston and AJ McCarron, after throwing for 2,892 yards and 24 touchdowns, and running for another 1,920 yards and 23 touchdowns. By Sunday, Lynch, who went undrafted, signed with the Bears to play running back.

“He's a really fine runner,” general manager Phil Emery said. “The fact that he can throw with accuracy in a short area is good too. You want as many athletes who can do as many things as possible and he certainly presents options that way. ...

“He's got a great set of eyes,” Emery continued. “He's very instinctive, especially for a quarterback between the tackles. He just knows where to find the soft spots and take that little sidestep and keep moving forward while he's making his moves. He's got really good contact balance. He doesn't go down easy. I like all those things.”

The 23-year-old Lynch, listed at 6-0, 217 pounds, ran a 4.76 40 at the combine, where he took part in running back drills and had the third-fastest three-cone drill (6.55) of all running backs since 2003.

Lynch, meanwhile, is ecstatic for a chance to keep playing, even if it means changing positions.
