Gasol says no to Lakers offers

The Chicago Bulls and the San Antonio Spurs have emerged as the two leading contenders to land prized free-agent big man Pau Gasol, according to sources close to the process.

Sources told ESPN.com that Gasol is giving strong consideration to signing with defending champion San Antonio -- despite the Spurs' limited financial resources with such a deep roster -- in the event that the Bulls can't strike a sign-and-trade arrangement with the Lakers for Gasol.

The Bulls are making Carlos Boozer widely available in trade discussions, but sources say the Lakers have shown a reluctance in talks with Chicago to take on Boozer's contract unless they also receive a young asset back from the Bulls as well.

Gasol says he's making decision soon. Likely Spurs or Bulls. Can Bulls keep that alive while waiting on Carmelo? That's what they face.

Pau Gasol's last tweet translated: "Now I am very close to making the decision. Thank you all for your interest and support!

 

Pau has virtually closed the deal with Chicago and plans to pass the medical examination before returning to Barcelona in the coming days.

Looks like he will be a Bull

 

I don't hate this if the Bulls are signing him to back up at shooting guard. Even in best case scenarios, Rose is probably going to need some time off the season, and it would be nice to have a shooting guard who could also play point. Instead of DJ or for more than the vet minimum? I hope they'd look for better options.

I have not seen how many years they are talking about with Pau. This is a strange move, given we have Taj and Mirotic. If its for 2 years I guess. But Taj isn't going to be happy coming off the bench.

 

Gasol is a real deal post threat.

The negatorians can hold to their "top FAs don't want to come here" by pointing out that Gasol is old. Fine. Some of those same negatorians rely heavily on PER. Gasol's PER last season was 19.3.

Congrats to GarPax for getting this done.

 

If he is making MAX then he's a top FA. He's the best MLE the Bulls have spent maybe ever.

 

I suspect that he's above MLE, but who are your all-time MLE Bulls signings?
