I LOVE All Along the Watchtower. I think Cash "Hurt" and "Heart of Gold" are good.

I really like lots of the Chili Pepper covers. But pretty much none of them are top notch on caliber with something like All Along the watchtower. But...

RHCP "If You Want Me To Stay"... RHCP "I Get Around" ... and RHCP "If you got funk you got style".

    Hmm...

Funny. I saw your thread title (still haven't read the rest of the thread) and the first song I thought of as a candidate was Johnny Cash doing "Hurt". Reznor is great, but he has the wrong tempo and tone in the original. Cash (and Rubin) hit the damn bullseye. It's perfect.

The other one that has been a favorite of mine since the first time I heard it - All Along the Watchtower by Jimmi Hendrix, covering the original Dylan tune. Pretty hard to top that one. I mean, there is a fantasic museum building built to honor the dude. This song is one reason why.

Never cared for John Mayer til I saw this on Conan. Just a bluesy, faster, louder version of a great song. With a gut busting solo.

Lol. This song is especially painful for me. The night that Bartman and the Cubs went awry in Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS, I left the sportsbar and drove around town listening to that song over and over and over again. Probably crazy to be so upset over a game, but I really wanted to go to the World Series. Now when I hear it, it gives me a headache and the sinking feeling kind of like I've just gone through a bad breakup or something.
