Yeah, what I mean is that so often a "gimmick" movie (storyline gimmick) that is popular and well regarded fades more over time than standard script movies. But, not always. I think Groundhog and Gump are still worth watching. I won't watch Sixth Sense anymore. Just my personal reaction.
If I was creating a Best films of the 90's list, they wouldn't be on it. You aren't doing that. You are buying DVD's. You can buy movies because the film is suppose to be the "best" and it will sit on the shelf gathering dust, or you can buy movies that people actually watch. So, I put on the list movies that you can see over and over and still want to watch them and from a mix of types so you have variety: Comedy; Drama; Western; Sci-Fi/Action; Thriller. Now, mind you it is my list. If you think you won't watch action movies at home - fine - delete them. But if you want a couple of full-bore, all-out popcorn action flicks on the list, are there any better? I mostly agree though, as I don't watch these or other action flicks nearly as often as most of the other movies on the list.
That's a really good point. It's why I wouldn't add Schindler's List. Every time I'd open my DVD collection I'd be depressed, and feel a little guilty and superficial that I was watching Groundhog Day instead. So yeah, I see why it's there now. Hmmm. Still not convinced, but I get it.
Obviously there's a lot to name but I"m going to say some that haven't really been said. What's eating Gilbert Grape - Good flick, love Dicaprio's and Depp's acting. Though I've never did dig Juliette Lewis Ed Wood - If you ever want to get into a creative median this is definitely a film you should check out. Trois Coluers: Rouge - Or known as Red in English. This is seriously one of the most brilliant films of all time. As Good As it gets - Jack Nicholson's acting is superb in this film and is one of my all time favorites because of the relationships with each character. Princess Mononoke - Yeah I know it's an animated film but it is just epic. If anyone seen Spirited Away this is another masterpiece by director Hayao Miyazaki If I had to make a top 10 of the 90's Schindlers List Pulp Fiction Goodfellas Shawshank Redemption "Red" Silence Of the Lambs Fargo Unforgiven Malcolm X Saving Private Ryan

Yeah, I'm surprised how few people talk up Dark City. I thought it was absolutely spectacular film-making. A thriller you could just enjoy for entertainment value, and yet it also gave you something to think about and talk about with others afterward. Plus, it was just so stylish in look. Rushmore is a pretty different movie from that, though. I personally think Wes Anderson makes the best comedies, but he's polarizing. If you enjoy Rushmore, I'd suggest his others, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou and Darjeeling Limited. I actually consider The Royal Tenenbaums the greatest movie ever, but it didn't fall under '90s.
Tenenbaums was a fantastic film. I thought the Darjeeling Limited was basically a worse version of the same film, on an Indian train. I think there's a great film to be made in that setting (not Slumdog Millionaire, which was pretty overrated) but Darjeeling wasn't it.

What About Bob? is a lot like Groundhog Day to me...it doesn't seem like "high art," yet I can enjoy watching it pretty much whenever I happen to come across it. Which is why I pretty much reject the idea of "high art" as an important concept. It's either enjoyable or not, really.
Ah the 90s seemed like such a better time than now, shame i was only 10 when they ended... Pulp Fiction and Smoke Signals Chris Eyre ftw!
