Anyway, how could we forget about Maic vs Bird? Started in their college years, and continued to their pro careers. Probably the best rivalry ever IMO.

Aren't we talking about current rivalries? Because of course, Larry vs. Magic is the best ever and will never be topped. However, you can't watch that anymore except on ESPN Classic. If you compare every rivalry to that one, nothing would ever come close.

I agree with Trail_blazer76 about Magic and Bird. I would have said that if I got to this thread earlier.

That was a true rivalry in a great era of basketball.

Melo vs James is overrated, the media created that rivalry. Both players have a different assignent for their team and a different game style. In their November meeting, Lebron scored 7 and Carmelo had 14. Right now, I dont consider them a rivalry, they are just two rookies playing amazing basketball. It could possible be something special down the road, but the media has created it all thus far.

If you want to consider a rivarly for the future, consider McGrady vs. Lebron. Their Christmas day game was amazing, it was something that could end up on ESPN Classic. Both players tried to out do each other, play after play. A real treat to whomever watched it.

I'd consider Kobe vs Shaq a rivalry. They are always stirring up problems in Laker land.

Shaq vs Yao was overhyped, much like Melo vs Lebron, but it's still a rivalry. Yao had a couple of great blocks in their first matchup, enough for the media to take it and run. It still has the potential to be something special.

I agree with sunsfan, Tyson Chandler vs Amare Stoudemire has slowing been buildng up. It's two players coming out of high school, trying to out do each other. When Amare had a monster game, Tyson responded back with huge numbers.

As for team rivalries, I love the Kings vs Lakers. I'll never forget their preseason fight with Fox getting embarrassed followed by Christie's wife coming to the rescue. Classic...

All time player rivalries which were the best are probably:
1. Magic v. Bird
2. Chamberlain v. Russell
3. West v. Robertson

Some recent ones that a lot of people probably forgot were Robinson v. Olajuwon, and Mourning v. Ewing. That last one happened quite a bit in the playoffs, in '93, '97, '98, '99, and '00.

[IMG] The Kobe Stopper? Yeah right, he can barely stop his wife(lowblow, I know, sorry TB).

I think the Melobron (wow, it could have its own word, and go in dictionaries 20 years from now [IMG] ) rivalry would be much greater if they were in the same conference rather than opposite sides of the NBA.

But I do think the rivalry has promise, kinda like a Clyde Drexler rivalry with Jordan, where they don't play each other often and one player will be considerably better than the other. And besides, although its a media created rivalry, both Carmelo and Lebron haven't shied away from it. They may even take advantage of it to profit from the 'rivalry', posing in commercials like Magic and Bird did.

Funny.

People were talking up the Kobe/McGrady rivalry for the past two seasons, but the former has three rings to show for his talents. Should TMac ever find himself on a better team (or Kobe on a worse), then perhaps we can talk about a serious rivalry.

Carmello and Lebron seems promising, but unless Lebron can get some talent to support his ascension, he'll be fighting that rivalry from below.

The compelling thing about past player rivalries (e.g. Magic/Bird) is that they made each other feel the pain of losing a championship run. It's not as interesting to see great players on crappy teams go at it.

Haha

I just have a rivalry that I can not believe has not been mentioned. Kobe Vs. Who? Who? Who? O yea that's right Antawn Jamison! They go crazy when they playe(ed) each other! Remember they both had a 50+ point night in the same game?! That's just crazy. That rivalry no longer exists though, now that Jamison is a sell-out and joined the Dallas Cubans (International Team)LOL. Jamison has gone to an all-time low. He will never get to revive that rivalry with Kobe again :sob: [IMG]

I would definitely have to say that Kobe and Tmac have the best rivalry going on in the NBA. Everytime you see the two best players in the NBA going at it, you can expect to see a show.

Lebron and Carmello can definitely grow to have a great rivalry, because of the potential of these two youngins

can you elaborate on the lue and iverson rivalry in the beginning of this thread... i know it was in the finals between sixers and lakers but i guess i didnt really pay attention. it was a good matchup though.

but id say the jamal crawford and jay willaims one in chicago, it wasnt really exposed but it was blown up here in chicago.

yeah, but i guess lakers-kings team-wise is better... the fans really hate each other, the teams, the players...

sticking to the topic... the matchup no 1. now is LeBron-Melo, 2. Kobe-TMac 3. Shaq-Yao

That wasn't a rivalry. That was a classic show betwwen a veteran and an upcoming veteran rookie. It was nice to watch though. Tracy McGrady & Toronto is a good rivalry. He always seem to make evryone go quiet when he plays their.
