This one. The one we have cap space for. I agree with your description of him though: "He's an inconsistent guy. He's a decent defender. He's a fantastic shot blocker though. Read a multitude of articles from analysts and fans about his maturity and consistency." Personally I can go either way with this guy. I have said many times I am not a fan of maxing out centers as I think the position is no longer in the top 3 of importance. Nor do I think shot blocking is as important as some say. But with the cap going up......I think he makes us a better team and his huge salary won't bug me as much. I just don't see a better option in the near future to use our cap space on. What we get for that cap space is partially what we get for not re-signing LMA. A shot blocking center would not be a bad value. I would prefer Horford, but I can see the advantage for Whiteside too. We certainly are not the only ones who want him.
Especially when those have shown to be weaknesses at times for our team. Every player has weaknesses and challenges. Im not saying that there arent other options but there is little doubt that he make our weaknesses better and therefor theoretically a better team overall
He's an elite rebounded and defensive center. His total rebound and block percentages are higher than any year that someone like Mutombo ever had. Total game changer if added to this lineup. I'd consider Biyombo to be a solid, but slightly boring use of cap space. Whiteside makes the Blazers a legit threat in the West IMHO.
Certainly not the opinion I share, but it doesn't matter because he is going to get a max deal whether I like it or not. I just hope it's not us. Inconsistent, immature, injured knees.... yuck
Well to me at this point it one of 2 things, either 1) Olshey has shown me enough to trust his evaluation and vetting process and/or 2) we are kind of at the point where we have to take a bit of a gamble to take the next step.
The ONLY reason I'd take Howard instead is because I think you MAY be able to get him on a shorter contract. He doesn't excite me either. Personally I'd rather get Monroe and a vet min guy who can help protect the rim. I'll be excited if we get Whiteside because whether or not I think he is overrated, he is still a big name FA. Biyombo would probably be my preference. Lesser of all evils
There isn't really a safe bet here though. Howard has a bad back - which can be just as bad as knees, if not worse. Horford suffered a couple of major injuries that caused him to miss significant time (shoulder and peck) but at least it's not knees or back
Has he ever had knee surgery? Pat Riley said that Hassan Whiteside hasn't reached his ceiling yet. "He’s 26 years old, he’s a game changer. I don’t think he’s even reached his real ceiling in a couple of areas of the game," Riley said. "And I think that now he’ll be more comfortable once his situation ends." Riley has said that Whiteside will be the Heat's No. 1 priority this offseason, but the big man will likely be a first-round pick in fantasy next season regardless of where he lands in free agency. http://www.rotoworld.com/recent/nba/1727/hassan-whiteside
Please God no... (arguing that Barnes would be a perfect fit for Blazers) Is the argument: yes, Barnes is completely shit when it matters, but let's be honest, the Blazers aren't going to go far anyway, so it won't come up.
OK I see it now....2011 "Sacramento Kings’ center Hassan Whiteside underwent successful surgery this morning at the UC Davis Medical Center to repair a partially torn patellar tendon in his left knee. Dr. Richard Marder performed the surgery. Whiteside will miss four to six months of action and should be available by the start of the Kings’ 2011-12 Training Camp.
Yes, I believe he has. If you look at all his transaction more of them have been good or even great than bad. If 100% accuracy is your standard then you will always be disappointed.
I'm starting to think that free agency in this age of funny money should mean the following strategy: Step 1: offer max to genuine stars (offensive and/or defensive, so Whiteside would count) Step 2: (when step 1 fails) sign a bargain basement Aminu type. No offering the max to players who will never deserve it (looking at you Harrison Barnes, Chandler Parsons) or who may have once deserved it but not any more (Howard, Noah). Fuck that noise.
