Nate wants shooters that can hit a 3 when his ISO offense breaks down. Matthews fits that way more than Brewer. Matthews is also a pretty good perimeter defender too.
On second thought, I think I'd be a bit wary of going after Utah role players. They have a great system that makes them look better than they would be in a worse system (especially ours).
Why wouldn't we? I trust our scouts as much I would trust some of the GM candidates on personnel decisions. We won't be getting someone that will come in and know our needs more than those who are already with the organization.
Speaking of Brewer... (sorry if this has been posted) http://nba.fanhouse.com/2010/06/30/grizzlies-shoo-away-ronnie-brewer/ Ronnie Brewer is a better version of Wes Matthews in my eyes. He'd look really good as a role player off the bench and is known as a solid defender.
Not a bad idea. Brewer is a solid role player. He does a lot of things. No 3 pt shot, but he can get to the basket.
12.3 PER, average shooter in college, 38% FG/35% 3pt in playoffs ... there have to be better options.
PER isn't going to show defense. Check Bruce Bowen's PER through his career. I'm guessing in his prime, you'd whine about getting him, too. We're not looking for a starting SG. He'd be targeted as a guy who can come in, hit open shots, and play good defense off the bench.
Drtg of 108 for Matthews in the regular season, Drtg of 115 in the playoffs, and Kobe Bryant destroyed him for 32 ppg and 52% FG in the LA series. How is that even close to being Bruce Bowen?
I didn't say he's close to Bruce Bowen. I said PER doesn't show defense, and used Bowen as an example of someone who was a very good contributor, but whose PER sucked. Batum had a 107 Drtg, and 121 in the playoffs. Guess he's a shit defender too.
Batum was a shit defender in the playoffs. I'm just trying to figure out when Wesley Matthews became a defensive stopper. Sorry if I'm not filled with joy at the prospects of giving Matthews $4 million. He's a "meh" IMO.
Batum shoulder was really bad and probably shouldn't have been even playing. So, that is probably the reason for his bad defense in the playoffs.
I though about that after I posted, but then again, the poster comparing Batum to Wes Matthews threw me off my game. Utah almost would have to match, but is Matthews going to want to go from starter as a rookie in Utah to bench player behind a 3-time All-Star? I'd hate to see the MLE tied up for a week even if Matthews sigend while Utah takes its time matching, like with Millsap.
