Serious question: why hasn't the Green Bay model ever happened anywhere else? Why can't it?

I have not read up on this thread, so I apologize if that was already brought up, but does anyone else see the coincidence of the lottery with the announcement?

Meaning if we had landed Flagg, maybe no sale because of the assumed uptick in ticket sales and inevitable team value increasing?

NFL banned it after Green Bay as they didn't want it to become a trend. The leagues don't want teams to be publicly owned - they want all owners to be able to take profit and sell for a gain. If one team has no need for profits it could put all the other privately held teams at a competitive disadvantage.

But even if it was allowed - today the cost of teams is just way to high. No city in the world can pay the billions needed in cash to buy a team.

I guess maybe some owner some day could create a trust to allow the team to transfer to nonprofit status at their death. If ever there was a situation for that to happen it would be this type of case where Allen estate had more cash than it knows what to do with and everything is just getting donated to charity anyways. But then is the ~$4 billion better off staying in a Blazers trust vs just going to charities in the next few year? Who would manage the Blazers if it was owned by a nonprofit? Who decides if a player is worth hundred million + contracts? Can the team give a contract to a player like Kobe charged with rape at a max contract?

Don't think anyone will ever know - perhaps it was a minor factor.

But a 4+ billion dollar sale is such a bigger asset than what happens with one unproven 19 year old player - seems unlikely that was a large factor.

I did hear the NBA is very happy with the Celtics $6 billion valuation as they can use that as leverage to charge a similar amount to an expansion franchise fee.

I wonder if part of the Blazers going to sell now is to try and get the whole NBA to support a high sale price? It could directly impact the expansion fee so all 29 teams and the league are going to want to see the Blazers sold for a very high price. If it was 5 years ago or 5 years from now the other teams just might not care much one way or the other.

Other explanation I heard was this is related to the Seahawks. Seahawks had an agreement with Seattle over stadium funding that if the team was sold prior to 2025 there would be a big fee. Perhaps the trust wanted to ensure there weren't any arguments from Seattle or others that the trust was trying to duck that fee by artificially delaying a Seahawks sale. Since none of the Allen owned sports teams were sold prior to 2025 there is now no argument for that.

    According to Google:
The Seattle Seahawks are not expected to be put up for sale until 2025, at the earliest. This is due to a provision in the 1997 referendum that funded Lumen Field, which would require Jody Allen to pay 10% of the sale price to the state of Washington if the team were sold before May 2025. A 10% tax is no longer applicable for a sale after May 2025, according to The Spokesman-Review.

Cut the fucking cord from Seattle...sick of their arrogance up there towards us down here in our 1 sport town. We dont need to be their wholly owned subsidiary as a cash cow.

You work for the team, you should know more than me...

I'm happy because I feel like I can end my boycott. Fan is short for fanatic. After being lied to by Cronin and after their treatment of
Dame I stopped watching and attending games. That treatment just confirmed my belief that your boss doesn't give a fuck about my favorite team.
Now she's finally starting the sale process. Lots of fans are reacting the same way. I get to enjoy my favorite team again knowing sometime next season she won't be running it into the ground anymore.
As a new owner they'd also come in and evaluate Cronin and Chauncey and they BOTH could be gone. This possibility makes me happy. I can't be happy MF? :dunno:

At a price he wanted. Probably knows this is gonna be sold at market value. I bet he has an idea who and for what already.

Appreciate the link. Yeah that makes it sound like even more of a correlated issue.

13 days after the Seattle fee expires the Blazers are listed for sale.

I hope to God he doesn't. It'd be hard to remain a fan if someone like him, Musk, or Trump via Saudia Arabia by the team.

Let’s get a bunch of home grown businesses leaders to come together as an ownership group. Phil, Dutch bros, Tim Boyle, Mcmenamin bros, salt n straw lady, Leatherman, Les Schwab….our concourse would be top notch. Get your tires rotated while waiting an hour to get your mcmenamin burger, burn your tongue on some hot coffee and cool it off with a bone marrow wafflecone ice cream. @HCP could shop for new kicks that undoubtedly I will out do.
