I think people forget the predecessors Nate had here in Portland - does anyone question that he is better than Cheeks, Dumbleavy or Carlesimo?

 

People love to point out imperfections but they rarely have solutions to the problems they complain about.

 

Rick Adelman has never won a title as a coach, hasn't been to the Finals in 20 years, missed the playoffs the past two seasons, got passed over by the Lakers for their job in favor of Mike Brown, and just basically got fired by Houston, yet he's supposed to be a huge upgrade.

 

Compared to Nate? of course he's an upgrade over Nate. Adelman's about 10% better in winning % in both the regular season and playoffs, has made the post season 16 out of 20 seasons as a head coach compared to Nate's 5 out of 11, and you can rip on him for not winning it all but lets not forget that in 11 years as a head coach Nate has 1 playoff series win to his name.

 

I think you totally missed the point of his post

 

Better than Cheeks and Carlesimo? Yes. Better than "Dumbleavy"? Not based on record he isn't.

If you only look at their record with the Blazers, Mike D had more success than Nate.

 

I guess I did as well. The Adelman bashing puzzles the hell out of me.

 

Of course, but since we all have the ability (or at least most on here) of considering mitigating factors such as available rosters, then it's quite easy to reason that he too was a worse coach than Nate. Mike egregiously underachieved with the most talent laden roster this franchise has ever seen. Nate took what may have been the least talented roster in the league upon his arrival and had it as the #4 seed in his third season.

 

The newspaper made Bob Whitsitt trade Jermaine O'Neal for Dale Davis and do the Brian Grant for Shawn Kemp sign and trade? They made him bring back Detlef Schrempf and Rod Strickland to a roster that already had playing time issues and caused a team that had the best record in the league and hadn't lost more than two games in a row all season to immediately lose 5 in a row, lose 14 of their final 22 games, drop from first seed in the west to 8th seed and get swept in the first round by the same Laker team they'd taken to 7 games in the Western Conference Finals the year before?

Interesting... I never knew Whitsitt was so weak minded that he'd cave in to pressure from the local media like that. I guess that explains why he completely destroyed a very talented team that came within one horrible 4th quarter of winning a title the year before and started our current streak of playoff futility. Thanks for pointing that out.

We fired RA and downgraded to PJ
We fired MD and downgraded to Cheeks

 

This shows me how insignificant a first-round playoff series is in terms of winning a title.

I think setting a goal of winning a playoff series for a season as being uselss, but that's just me.
