Neil's the guy that brought Hughes on board after working with him for years. He knew what he was getting and had to know what kind of filters Hughes had...or didn't have. It Olskey's responsibility to insure everyone is on the same page.
What confuses me about all this is that Hughes is not a stupid person . . . both as a coach and common sense kind of person. He must have known a comment like that would put his job in jeopardy. Which makes me believe either he was so out of touch with Blazer world he didn't know Olshey just commented on the Aldridge issue (unlikely and still smart enough to not comment on LA's free agency status) or it was an act of rebellion against Olshey. I feel Olshey has been shady since day one he became the GM. I commented back then you probably can't believe anything he says. Now personally I don't care as long as he can put together a good team, but I really have never believed much of what he says. Maybe his misrepresentations have carried so far as to affect staff. Maybe Hughes has had enough of Olshey's BS and decided to make him look foolish with a short but powerful public statement. Hughes is a talented coach who will find a job with another team . . . I think Hughes knew exactly what he was doing and decided to expose Olshey for the liar he is.
He won 48 with DJ Augustin as his primary scorer. And 60+ Once, 50 in the 66 game strike shortened season.
I don't think every GM lies, many misrepresent (many stay silent) but some misrepresent (lie) more than others. Olshey comes from LA to Ptd as a slick talking GM who had all the answers. He had a comment for everything, but it turns out that he just shoots from the hip and doesn't hesitate to throw stuff out there that sounds good but may not be true. I suppose everyone slips up, but this wasn't a simple slip up. A slip up is missing a meeting or a bus to the plane. That statement cost him his job . . . and not everyone makes statements that cost them their job.
I now see that Hughes comments were one day after Neil's comments. I thought they were before for some reason. That changes everything for me. That is no coincidence if that is true. I agree that was a calculated response by Hughes.
Calculated in what way? If he wanted to leave he could have just resigned. I doubt he gained anything by being fired. barfo
Wanted to call Olshey out for all his BS (just a theory . . . but it would bug the hell out of me if I worked for someone like that . . . says whatever sounds good) "Caleb's my guy"
I gave him the benefit of the doubt when I thought it was before Neil's comments. Even though I thought Hughes went out of his way with the way he worded things. It seemed odd....like it was prepared. (Calculated)
Hughes knew the parameters of his employment; and stepped outside of those boundaries. Any job with sensitive information would have yielded the same outcome. Sure it may have been an innocent (and truthful) mistake, but in the end Kim only has himself to blame. Having said that, I feel sorry for the guy for losing his job for 'just telling the truth' and hope he lands another gig.
If that was what it was, then he certainly deserved to be fired, calling out the boss in public isn't really the mark of a good employee. barfo
I'm surprised how many people are OK with NO lying to fans. Give me a break with this he is trying to fool players to come to Ptd. Everyone knew LA was leaving. NO moves showed he was leaving, articles said he was leaving, I can't imagine an agent worth his salt thinking LA was staying. NO, from day one, shoots from the hip and says anything he wants, he is well spoken and delivers it well . . . but he thinks we are gullible fans that will believe anything he says. I say take your slick hair and forked tongue and go back to LA. Give me a GM I can trust.
Doesn't make the mark of a good boss when a classy person like Hughes does it (if that is what he did) But I agree he deserves to be fired.
