The role of the President is to build fan base, public image, and market share. It is not to take responsibility in drafting the next top pick, it is not to get a tired guy to run up the court faster... things that the press and fans have been fixating on for the last couple of seasons. I simply asked what possible criticisms of Miller he had seen to find it obvious that he was any less secure in his position than a coach who gets posts and polls here on a weekly basis about what a terrible job he is doing. As for your query, I do not know what the writer was implying, only that in my opinion, Nate is more likely to be ousted than a President who in the eyes of the fans, and as far as we can tell Vulcan, has not a tarnish on his record. Really though, I am simply challenging barfo, in that I don't think he realized there was a Miller other than Andre on the payroll... the writers statement seemed true enough to me for an outside observer, but I was hoping he would prove me wrong with some actual insight and school me.
The rumor that I heard is that there is a handshake agreement between PA and LM that when PA finally decides to sell the team LM gets first chance to buy. LM is only the team president to learn first hand about owning and running a NBA franchise. As head of the Air Jordan division LM made millions in Nike stock options. A low figure was $80 mill and the high is $300 mill. I can see an ownership group of wealthy former Nike employees being the next owners of the Blazers.
LM had the greatest job ever with Nike, but even on the high side, is 300M enough to buy a team? How many more would he need to bring in to get to the magic number? Interesting idea.
Huh? I was aware that we were talking about Larry. Andre's position is clear. He's the PG until someone better comes along. What's Larry's position? How sure are you that he's better than everyone else that Paul might be considering? What great things do you think he's accomplished as President? Are they greater than what KP did as GM? If KP doesn't have job security, why do you believe LM does? barfo
“It was like I was telling (Aldridge), I don’t get this opportunity in New Orleans without the people here,’’ Williams said. “Working with Nate, and having (general manager) Kevin Pritchard give me the confidence to do my job. Kevin has done an unbelievable job here. This thing was in the gutter when we got here, and they’ve changed it. People don’t realize how hard that is.’’ - Monty Williams from olive
The NBA offers qualified potential owners $100 mill in low interest financing. Why is Larry Miller President of the Blazers, it's not because he needs the paycheck.
I hope if the team is sold in the future, it's sold to someone who has deep pockets and hires those who are basketball minds. And the new owner lets those people do what they need to do.
None of that is needed. It's the Twitter age. Just sent up an account and let the fans send you their ideas. We's smart hear!
There was all sorts of talk (mainly out of Seattle) of moving the Trailblazers up there in 2006. Don't think it's too far fetched. The Vulcans have only profits in mind, and they think that they know whats best for the team. Moving to a bigger market might help. Given all the Seattle connections already in place, the fact that the precedent has already been set with the Sonics themselves and the general curse of the Trailblazers... I'm just saying I wouldn't be surprised.
I don't call extending Randolph to a max deal, re-signing a decrepit Ratliff for a three year $35 million contract, extending a malcontent in Miles to a six year, $48 million contract, while fucking up the 04 and 05 drafts... "setting the table."
There is the speedbump that is building a new arena there before they can have another team to deal with as well.
Profits? Leaving an arena in Portland that they will still own without it's biggest tenant, paying a huge penalty to the City of Portland for breaking the development agreement. None of this happens if PA just sells the team and buys an expansion franchise. There are no profits to be made if PA tries to move the team to Seattle.
You do realize that the RG has now been sold out every night for the last two + seasons, right? With that kind of support, and the historically weaker support for NBA in Seattle, the Vulcans would be stupid to move there.
Did you miss it the first time, where we rebuilt after setting the NBA record for consecutive playoff appearances?
Finally! This will be the first GM hiring in over a decade not decided by The Oregonian. They will go into a jealous tizzy over not being allowed to run the team! I can't wait to see them sabotage the new guy. Any idiot who offers $3M to make trades happen can do better than Pritchard did.
I have no doubt it will be ... and the good people of Las Vegas will embrace the Blazers with open arms.
