The only good thing about this deal is it's only for one year guaranteed.

Unknown, but Kim Hughes was the guy who made Kaveman a legit offensive big man. Now that they're back together, I can see Chris getting back a bit of his former awesomeness. Plus who better to mentor Leonard?

Saying I am completely underwhelmed with this would be an large overstatement.

Last year we had games with Rolo, Wright, Batum and Clavier as our only active big men! Yes Claver was our backup center. We were in need of an extra big man to balance the roster.

With a 15 man roster ideally the Blazers would be 3 deep at all positions. We have LMA and Rolo starting, with Kaman, TRob, Freeland and Meyers as big men backups. Works out to perfectly balanced 3 deep.

Trail Blazers have reportedly agreed to terms with free-agent center Chris Kaman. Portland had only the mid-level exception ($5.3 million for up to four years) and bi-annual exception ($2.1 million for up to 2 years) at its disposal.

The signing, first reported by Yahoo!, is a shrug. But general manager Neil Olshey was in a free-agent gun fight with a slingshot. He obviously wanted to avoid being left out, and managed to still maintain some flexibility because the Kaman signing, as reported, doesn't lock the Blazers into a marriage with the free agent.

Kaman's deal, as structured, is just a mid-level exception summer fling.

Year No. 1 is reportedly worth $4.8 million, and Year No. 2 is reportedly a $5 million deal with only one million of that guaranteed. Best case: He stays healthy and gives the Blazers a slightly upgraded front court. Worst case: He doesn't and Portland suffers from front-court exhaustion as it did at times last season.

Next up... a back-up point guard with the bi-annual exception. That signing will be underwhelming as well given the price tag attached to the roster spot.

But really, what Portland badly needs is for Will Barton and/or Meyers Leonard to take a massive step forward. I'm still a believer that Leonard is going to matter one day. He's only 22, and I love his athleticism and size. But if we're looking for a guy who appears capable of making an immediate impact should coach Terry Stotts trust him, it's Barton.

Either of those incumbents, or maybe second-year guard CJ McCollum, could end up a more important player for the Blazers next season.

Kaman's signing keeps Portland weird, and upgrades the bench some, but not much else. I'm not shocked that the Blazers made a move before all the major free-agent dominoes fell --- they were playing a little defense with this signing, making sure they got something serviceable in an offseason that featured no draft picks.

Underwhelming but not a bad contract. Still part of Olshey's Cap Space plan for next summer although who will the FA's be?

I was disappointed when I first saw this thread. I wanted Hawes. But I'm on board with Kaman after reading this thread. 10/6 in 19 minutes is awesome. He gives us another legit 7 footer. If something happens to Lopez or if Lopez gets into foul trouble, Aldridge will still have a legit 7 footer on the floor with him. He's happy to be here. He considers us a contender. Lillard and Lopez want him to be here. I'm happy.

At the end of the day he does make our team better. Yes there were others that could have helped more but he still makes us better. What's done is done and I will root for him and hope to be pleasantly surprised

People across the board were underwhelmed when we signed Lopez last summer after making Hibbert an offer and I think given Hughes relationship with Kaman and the team we have, Chris may just have a great year as a Blazer. This was a "Moneyball" move. He doesn't hit homers but he gets on base.
