Layman could still be a throwaway in a Houston/NY trade, hold out hope!

That's because he's doing things he normally wouldn't be asked to do during a regular season. I'm just not putting much stock in these summer league games--I know it's all we really have to evaluate him unfortunately.

Layman, like Pat C were featured scorers on this summer league team. That's never going to be their game in the NBA. They are the "Oops, we forgot this guy was on the floor while we were concentrating on Dame/CJ/Nurk" guys - and they need to hit the open shot (PatC) or cut on the open lane (JaLay).

We know that PatC can be a shooter at the NBA level when this happens (we already seen it). I suspect that JaLay will be able to do the other - he has enough athletic ability to do that. That's all you really want from these guys, realistically.

We have some NBA time & the D-League time for him too. Outside of his first 10-minutes of action, he's looked like garbage (regardless of the setting).

I've seen him brick wide open shots. I think he would normally be asked to make those.

I remember Allen Crabbe and how bad he shot his first year at summer league and how bad he shot his first two seasons in the NBA. We kept hearing about how great a shooter he was in practice but in games it wasn't happening. Some young guys just get in their own heads and they lose confidence, then they start trying to hard, except shooting is not about how hard you try but about your rhythm/confidence. I think Layman actually is a good shooter, and it sounds like he's definitely putting in the work. I'm not going to write him off after three stupid summer league games.

How many bricks does this guy have to lay before you're ready to admit he's just not a good shooter? I posted this yesterday, before today's 1-9 gem:

No sense complaining about the 12th and 13th guys on the roster. They are practice fodder who know the offense and defense

I've seen those too--he's pressing is what I'm trying to explain. He's got too much on his plate in these games and he's pressing--nothing looks relaxed it all looks rushed. He looked fine during the season (to some degree) when asked to chill around the three point line and slash here and there.

I totally agree with this reasoning and why I have been supportive of Jake up until now. But at some point he needs to show he can hit a wide open 3. Beautiful stroke but i think he uses too much arc...same on his free throws.

The deadline to cut Pat's contract is in a few days. I think he is gone .....

Crabbe shot .429 3FG% as a rookie and .353 3FG% (league average) his second season. He has never been a below average 3-point shooter.

But, it's more than just three summer league games. Other than his first miracle 8 minutes, Layman has shot like shit during garbage time of the regular season, in D League and in summer league. He's a combined 22 for 110 from down town since November 1 of last year. That's exactly .200 3FG%. That's way worse than Evan Turner and even worse than Andre Miller. And, it's all come against inferior competition.

If he is - this means they have someone they are going to sign imho. Terry played him a lot more than I expected last year. I suspect they like him a lot more than he showed in this summer league, but that's just my interpretation.

Oh come on. Crabbe shot a total of 14 3's his entire rookie season. This is when someone says, "Sample size". I see you've decided to complete dismiss Layman's best shooting game from three. I do the same for Crabbe and he shot 4/12 from three his rookie year. So I'm not seeing a compelling argument. Stats aside, you can't tell me that this board didn't criticize his shooting to no end the first few years. Layman hasn't even started his 2nd season. Maybe he's a bust, I don't know that yet.

Is other part of his game that I am talking about. I don't worry to much about his shooting. If not making shots what other things are you bringing to the table. What I have seen there not much and to be as athletic he is than you got a problem. He hasn't play very good D and he hasn't rebound well and he has made bad decision on his passing.

Or they keep a spot open for players to compete in fall camp. The have done that in the past.

In the post I made yesterday, I mentioned even if you include that first game Layman shot .255 from 3-point range as a rookie. He also shot .226 3FG% in the D League and is now shooting .154 3FG% in the summer league. That's a total sample size of 118 shots - more than Allen Crabbe attempted in his first two NBA season's combined.

Don't accuse me of playing the small sample size card when you're the one that mentioned Crabbe shot poorly his rookie year. Yes, the sample size was small, but you're the one who brought it up, not me.
