I said the same thing about a woman even beating me in basketball 10 years ago, and here we are today where they are actually good enough to watch and I probably couldn't beat a single WNBA player if I tried
The Rocket announcers were just talking about this. They think there will be a perimeter lady player that makes it in the NBA someday. Their point is that you could put a lady on LeBron's team and he would take enough of the defensive attention to get a woman an open 3.
Playing along here... so you're saying it's like Miami runs an offense that just leaves dudes open left and right, and it's the kind of offense where guys don't have to work hard against other NBA level talents to get open for their perimeter shots... Even if that were really true, what about defense? How's this hypothetical woman gonna do defending any NBA player? Hell, I could find you ten fat, over-the-hill dudes from the Y that can hit the three, but how's a woman going to defend CP3, or even Luke Ridnour for that matter?
griner has zero chance to be anything more than a publicity stunt. NONE. she is a 6'8" center, who would absolutely get dominated in the post. she would have ZERO offensive game, and not be able to rebound or box out or defend other centers (or anyone for that matter) i think it would need to be a 6'ish waterbug type, super athletic, physical beast, deadly shooter, with enough handle to get the ball up the floor, and guard opposing pgs or small sgs in the post when one of those comes along there might be something to talk about
I wonder if Marion Jones could have become that player if she focused on hoops instead of track? She had the size and athleticism, and I believe she was a PG in college, where skills and speed are more important than raw strength.
I'm defintely not full of myself when it comes to basketball skills, but I'm pretty sure I could beat a fair amount of WNBA players. I've played against college female basketball players before and I didn't even have to try.
If she tries out for an NBA team it would be humiliating. I'd like to think someone close to her would let her know before hand.
I really think the next jump is not a woman jumping to the NBA, but maybe playing in the NBADL. The only reason someone would draft her would be to make a statement and waste a 2nd round pick.
That is certainly the only possible chance. A skinny, weak, nonathletic, 6'8" post player would have zero chance. It has to be at a position where the "strength factor" is not as necessary as the "skill factor"
