This has been mentioned in the Ukraine/Russia thread, but I think it deserves its own: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-60701050
I really don't understand this... the story was all over CNN for days when it first broke. It's not like this was a minor story. What more do they want? Russia is currently destroying another country. I feel terrible for her but unfortunately this is now pretty low on the list of awful things that Russia is doing. Russia could kidnap Tom Brady and it wouldn't matter right now. The US has imposed massive sanctions on Russia and we're basically fighting a proxy war in Ukraine. Brittney Griner is a hostage.
The thing is, no one really cares because she's a WNBA player and no one really cares about the WNBA. LiAngelo Ball got more coverage from shoplifting in China and he was just a college player. If it was LeBron James, it'd be the top story instead of a side note.
I think there is a good chance they planted the hash oil on her. When Russia was looking to go to war, I'm sure they looked around and thought "who would be a good political prisoner?" Sounds like her LGBTQ status could work against her also.
It WAS a top story. I watched them play that clip of her in the airport on CNN over and over and over and over. Whether it's LeBron or Serena Williams or Tom Hanks..... what exactly is anyone supposed to do right now? Russia is murdering pregnant women in maternity hospitals. I think taking an athlete hostage is unfortunately pretty minor compared to the war crimes they're currently committing. It's all terrible but what are we supposed to do...... protest harder?
I disagree. Sometimes these athletes think they are above the law. Smoking that wacky tobaccy. People do shit like this all the time thinking they won't get caught.
I can see them planting it on her. I could also see it as being a case of it had been there while was traveling in the US for the season and she forgot about it. If you are going to Russia though you have to look and make sure there is nothing bad in your bag because they don't fuck around there. I get players go over their to make money in the offseason, but if she gets back home, I bet she never goes there again.
"they won't find out". I mean I have friends who hide weed when they fly all the time. Even back in the day when it was more illegal and we had to roll joints and then wrap them in dryer sheets. And in a vape cartridge? Most people would think it would just pass through.
I've done that but not internationally. Don't mess with customs. That being said my stepson snuck some carts into Mexico on our recent trip there. I was sort of mad because we paid a lot for him to be there and he was putting that at risk. He's an adult tho now and I won't bring him anywhere else because of that decision, since he obviously doesn't understand the consequences or respect what we were doing for him to be there. I wasn't that worried about major legal issues though because it was Mexico.
