If you know any nice Russians she could have been traded for, let me know.

The scientific theory of why some Americans didn't want Brittney Griner to come home from a Russian prison (msn.com)

Some people are considered deserving. Others are not.
There are those who think it was OK to leave her to rot and die in a Russian prison because they categorize Black people as drug users and criminals. White women are victims (sometimes anyway), Black women are bad girls.
People who protest on the left don't deserve the protection of their country. But those who storm the capitol and violently assault trans people are heroes who should face no consequences.

For me race, gender, gay/straight... none of that matters.

She shouldn't have been there. War was days away. Anyone going to Russia in that time was an oblivious moron who was putting their safety at risk. I would have a hard time feeling sorry for anyone who decided to travel to Russia at that time.

She broke the law and she could have been arrested for that same crime here in the US. Whether I agree with that law or not, she broke their laws.

You keep calling her a hostage, but they didn't snatch her off the street in the US and take her to Russia. She broke their laws and she was detained and arrested at their airport. Whether you agree with that or not, when we travel to other countries we are required to abide by their laws. If you don't like that, don't travel to those countries. I personally avoid countries where I'm concerned about corrupt police. I personally would not take my family to the middle east because of their laws against women. It's not worth the risk.

So with all that said, she was traded for a bad person who I believe can still be a risk to the safety of the world. So no, I'm not celebrating her release. I'm happy for her family. I think being in a Russian prison is probably a horrible experience, but there's an easy solution...... don't go to Russia.

It's perfectly ok to have the competing thoughts that I'm glad an American is home safe from a Russian prison, even if I'm not a fan of hers AND still not be happy we gave up one of the shittiest people on earth and have a former Marine and another school teacher left over there. I could care less what gender/race any of them are, if they are American citizens than they need to be home and it doesn't matter who the president is that makes it happen.

Again I ask, should she have been left to die?

Who has said she should be left to die? That's not a position that reasonable people have taken.

Maybe not reasonable people but it is a position some people have taken. And when I hear this exchange, as of now the only way to get her out, was a bad thing, yeah, maybe she should have been left. After all, it's her fault.

Even if we hadn't gotten her out, why do you think she would have died? Wasn't the sentence for 9 years?

9 years of working 16 hour days with little food, physical and sexual abuse. How many women do you think survive 9 years?

I don't know. Do you have data on that? Or are you just making assumptions?

Considering her body size and that

...to be fair, isn't this also an "assumption"?

There is no verifiable data on anything from Russia. Because it is a horrible country.

Their soldiers rape and torture their neighbors, who they want to bring into their country. Including babies.

There is actual evidence of this.

That's the evidence we have for how they treat their female prisoners they want to bring into the fold.

Imagine how they'd treat a female prisoner of their biggest rival...

Hypothetical. If Russia had traded Bout for Paul Whelan but kept Griner, would you be saying it's a terrible deal?

Remember when Trump released 5 Taliban prisoners for every 1 prisoner from the "other side"...and the right (checks notes) said nothing.

Just as they ignored Whelan for the three years he was imprisoned during previous administration, despite him being a Trump supporter who publicly pleaded for previous guy to help him.

Classic … a couple nut jobs on social media take that position and you try to magnify it like it’s a standard thought.
