The UFC announced tonight that they have signed Brock Lesnar to compete as a heavyweight with their promotion.

Lesnar went 33-0 wrestling in his senior year of high school in Webster, South Dakota, which led to him accepting a wrestling scholarship at the University of Minnesota. In 1999 Lesnar placed second as a heavyweight in the NCAA championship, placing first in 2000. Lesnar's legendary college wrestling career ended after four years during which he amassed a 106-5 record and was a four-time All-American and a two-time Big Ten champion to go along with his 2000 NCAA title.

Lensar signed with the dominant sports entertainment brand The World Wrestling Federation/Entertainment immediately following his NCAA career. After roughly two years of development in smaller promotions Lesnar debuted on WWE Raw in March of 2002. Lesnar won the 2002 King of the Ring tournament eventually leading him to a WWE heavyweight title shot at Summerslam. Lesnar defeated the reigning champion Dwaye "The Rock" Johnson and became the youngest champion in the history of the promotion at just 25 years of age.

Lesnar would go on to become the 2003 Royal Rumble champion and would win the WWE heavyweight championship twice more before officially leaving the WWE after Wrestlemania 20 in March of 2004. Lesnar's reasoning behind leaving the WWE was that he wanted to play in the NFL before he was too old to make it.

Lesnar's NFL career was short-lived. He spent a pre-season with the Minnesota Vikings during which he earned a reputation as a dirty player and a troublemaker. He was cut from the Vikings before their season began.

Lesnar returned to pro wrestling in 2005 in Japan, winning the IWGP championship at the Tokyo Dome for New Japan Pro Wrestling. Lesnar's stint with New Japan lasted until the summer of 2007 when he lost a match against Kurt Angle. Following the match Lesnar challenged Angle to a mixed martial arts fight. Angle has toyed with the idea of jumping over to MMA but his age and a history of neck and spinal problems have so far prevented him from making any serious steps towards such a transition.

Earlier that month Lesnar competed in his first MMA fight, a K1 bout against Min Soo Kim that he won easily in roughly one minute. It is his only professional mixed martial arts experience to date.

Issues regarding Lesnar's transition to mixed martial arts include a cloudy history concerning human growth hormones and steroids and the fact that he has been training in MMA for less than two years (reportedly). Lesnar's wrestling is predictably outstanding but his striking, grappling, and submission skills are presumably lacking. A major issue for Lesnar will be conditioning.
