Brewer is a bigger, more athletic and better defender than Hinrich. He's quite a bit worse than most of our players offensively. He does have a nice first step though. Still, I'll give this deal a mild thumbs up. As far as use of cap space goes, 3yrs and $12.5M is a decent deal for one of the league's better wing defenders. We might still be able to swing a trade for a major player if we wanted, although by front loading deals, the Bulls are signally that they hate the idea of actually trying to win anything. So even if we can, we won't.
I can't help feeling like my expectations are out of whack, because, well, they are. I wanted a championship team and I don't think we're that far away -- I could really be wrong on that. From all of the moves the Bulls are making it looks like they think we're two or three good pieces away. I'm happy about the Brewer signing but who is going to play shooting guard? Is Cory Benjamin still in the league? Edit: That's a joke, no green needed.
Brewer isn't particularly a scorer, but when he does score, he's efficient about it. The comments about spacing are spot on. He's more than incrementally an improvement over Hinrich at either end of the floor, and he's big at 6'7". We now have the option to use him at SF to rest Deng, as well. He's not a core piece by any stretch of the imagination.
Heh, I was all for drafting him too. Now we just need some stiff that can sit in a corner and hoist up threes. To people who would know, will the capspace we have leftover from this offseason stay the same during the season?
Yes. But the summer isn't over and Noah may still sign an extension that will eat up room as soon as it starts, which would be when the next FA period starts after next season.
During the season yes. So of we go into the year under the cap we still have some flexibility till next June.
On the surface, yes, but I think in practice Brewer has been a much better, more effective player. I wouldn't base everything on PER, but given that they're perhaps similar defenders, Brewer's career PER advantage of 15.8 vs. 10.5 is pretty glaring. My big complaint about Thabo is that, for a low usage player, he's incredibly inefficient and turnover prone. His TO rate is consistently one of the highest for non PG guards in the league
