Better than letting him walk next summer. We would have gotten nothing or him. Surprised we got this! Cap space for 2017? Lopez costs less than Noah would have. Calderon and Grant are find short term. Nothing spectacular. Friedell said the Bulls are not done dealing. I wonder what players we get with our cap money this summer? Bulls could be deeper all the way around.
I take back what I said about Grant. Kinda like getting a mid first round pick tomorrow except he has 1 year under his belt.
I heard Dunleavy and Snell could be gone. Depends on who we pick with #14. Some of you remember the source Holv3 he used to be with us at BBB,net
No. But, it beats letting Rose walk next summer. I am surprised we got anything at all for him. It cost NY nothing. Gives Derrick one year to do something.
Press release: Knowing Derrick as I do makes this trade a hard one. Everyone knows him as the local kid who became MVP for his hometown team, but not everyone got to know him like I did. While he is a terrific basketball player, he is an even better person with a tremendous heart," said Chicago Bulls Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf. "I wish him the best of health for the remainder of his career, and I want to personally thank him for everything that he did on the court and in the community during his time with the Chicago Bulls." "We will always be grateful to Derrick. He was a great teammate who put winning first, and nobody fought harder through injuries and disappointment. He wowed us all when he was on the floor and at his best. His MVP season was one for the ages. We wish Derrick nothing but the best moving forward," said Chicago Bulls General Manager Gar Forman. "As we said at the end of last season, we are committed to exploring every option to improve this team," said Forman. "This trade is a significant step in that process. Our goal is to get younger and more athletic, and this trade moves us in that direction and allows us to start changing the structure of our team. In Robin Lopez, we are acquiring a starting center who is a good defender, good rebounder, and brings a toughness to our team. Jose Calderon is a proven veteran who can run an offense and knock down threes. Jerian Grant was high on our draft board last year as someone with a great skill set and positional size. All three players are great teammates and have tremendous work ethic, and we are excited to welcome them to the Chicago Bulls organization." http://www.nba.com/bulls/news/release/bulls-send-derrick-rose-new-york-five-player-deal
Darren Rovell ✔ @darrenrovell $73 million: Amount Derrick Rose earned over the last four seasons for 139 total games played.
Why let him walk next summer? It cost CHI nothing to keep him. Or basically the same it cost NY to get him (opportunity to get a journeyman center, washed up PG, etc., rookie). If he works out for NY, are they going to let him walk?
DRose was not compatible with Jimmy Butler, the team's best player. For two-man pairings last season, Butler and Brooks were +4.4 points per 100 possessions. Butler and Moore were +3.1. Butler and Rose were -3.8. Is Calderon better than Rose? Maybe not, but it's a very good bet that Butler and Calderon are better than Butler and Rose. Before this trade, the Bulls didn't have a starting center since both Gasol and Noah are free agents. Neither was expected to re-sign with the Bulls. The Bulls now have a competent starting center signed for the next 3 seasons at a reasonable price. Holiday was a replacement-level type player. Grant has a higher upside. So yes, the Bulls got better.
From what I read, Rose had an eye problem. Once that healed, he played considerably better. Yeah, his overall stats suffered, but he still looked a lot better than those stats. Good move, though. Championship contender, finally.
Teddy Greenstein @TeddyGreenstein Harvey Grant tells Trib he's thrilled w/deal sending son Jerian to #Bulls: “God is good.” Predicts he’ll thrive in pick-n-roll offense.
I find this hard to take even if we got a good return. I'm a big fan of Lopez, all the way back to his Phoenix days. Rose has been my favorite player for the past seven years. He wasn't god awful last season either, he was showing signs of improvement. Man....this cut deep.
I'm confident history will show that this was a good trade for the Bulls, even if Derrick plays great next year. His free agency didn't look like it was going to go well for the Bulls.
