Fantastic news, but I agree with Mook, I don't want Bynum rushing back until his knee is right. I'm glad there's minimal swelling, that was a major issue with his first injury.

Lakers have won 7 straight and are tops in the league and Odom is playing All-Star basketball in Drew's absence.

I don't think he'll rush back. MCL injuries are common amongst sports injuries. Drew isn't stupid, he knows rushing back could cause further damage. I think he'll be game to go whenever he is ready.

Cool update:

The Lakers' wins in Boston and Cleveland will have the Celtics and Cavaliers talking to themselves for months.

This was without Andrew Bynum, whom the Lakers projected to miss eight to 12 months because of his knee injury, to make sure they didn't sit around waiting for him, like last season.

Actually, they project Andrew to miss only eight to 12 weeks, but that may be conservative too. There are now suggestions it will be more like eight (or seven) than 12.

"He came to practice yesterday and we talked a little bit about it," Jackson said before Tuesday's game.

"He showed me his flexibility. He has a brace he's wearing. The swelling is at a minimum right now. He's walking without aid. So he feels pretty good about what he's doing."

Lakers' Bynum hasn't started resistance training yet

Trainer Zarzana says he's still on course return sometime in April.

The long mornings turned into tired nights. Hours became days, and days became weeks.

First there were therapy and icing and laser treatments to strengthen the knee.

Then came running, jumping, bending, stretching. On the track, in the gym, in the whirlpool, on the exercise machines. Repeat the following day.

For Andrew Bynum, the routine became a tedious, yet necessary, ordeal a year ago, all done in the name of a healthy knee.

Now, the Lakers center is back on the trainer’s table trying to rehab a second knee injury, this one suffered against Memphis on Jan. 31. The Lakers center suffered a tear of his left medial collateral ligament during an on-court collision with Kobe Bryant.

“He’s definitely bummed out. He wants to be playing,” trainer Sean Zarzana said Monday. “He had hit a stride where he was feeling confident with his knee and all. But he is making the best of the situation. He’s trying to keep upbeat.”

Zarzana said Bynum won’t start running – not even on weight resistance machines – until doctors give him a clean bill of health on the injury that the player described as a “medium to high level” tear of the MCL. Until then, Bynum’s day consists of icing, laser treatments and range of motion exercises 3-5 times a day.

“He’s doing more physio-therapeutic treatments that allow you to heal,” Zarzana said. “Once we know that the ligament is in the proper position then we can gear it up. Once we are confident that the stability is there, we can start Andrew on a stationary bike.”

Zarzana is sticking with the original assessment that Bynum will be out for 8-12 weeks.

“We need it to heal,” he said. “We’re only 13-14 days into it.”

When Bynum went down with his other knee injury a year ago, he turned to Zarzana to get him back on the court.

The two originally met after Bynum went searching for a trainer who could help him keep weight on is 7-foot frame and in shape during the summer.

“In my second year in the league, I lost 17 pounds over the course of the season, which is a lot of weight for me,” Bynum said a week before his new injury. “So I put a word in with my agent that I would like to have a personal trainer because I was being in and out of shape and dropping weight. So he told me there was a guy who works with the Atlanta Falcons.

“So I flew him out here and the first time we met, we bowled together ….He whipped my butt. We just talked at the bowling alley and agreed to go through his workouts. It was nothing that I had ever seen before….Once I went through that for a summer I knew Sean was my guy.”

The two became fast friends, and when Bynum went looking to get back on the court after surgery last May for a partially dislocated left kneecap he suffered when he landed awkwardly on Lamar Odom’s foot, he called Zarzana.

Zarzana is a chiropractor/trainer based in Atlanta, who has worked with the NFL Falcons and a few basketball players, such as Dominique and Gerald Wilkens.

Because he never had worked with an athlete of Bynum’s caliber, Zarzana gathered opinions from several orthopedics, trainers, sports medicine doctors, including the Lakers’ Dr. Steven Lombardo, before embarking on the center’s comeback.

“We wanted the best for Andrew, so I figured if there was someone out there who can do it better than me, let’s do it, let’s find him,” Zarzana said, who has relocated to Los Angeles during the season. “Let’s get it right.”

After getting medical clearance from orthopedic surgeon Dr. David Altchek, the two went to work, first at the gym, then on the track. Bynum showed up at this season’s training camp slimmed down, stronger and ready to go.

Although it seemingly took Bynum several weeks to gain confidence on his knee, he had been playing some of his best basketball when he again went down.

The Lakers apparently were not initially pleased that Bynum has arranged to work primarily with his own trainer rather than the teams’ staff. The two sides eventually agreed to work together for Bynum’s sake.

“We got a lot of adversity (from the Lakers), especially when I brought him back out here,” Bynum said. “The Lakers obviously don’t want an outsider (involved) or their player away from the training staff. But I felt my best chance at getting better and my best chance at succeeding and being the player I wanted to be was with Z (Zarzana).”

And he’s feeling that way again.

The Lakers' need to get over their adversity of Zarzana. He has worked wonders with Bynum. What a fucking joke. Nice to see he is still on tracK!

And the article says that they won't be rushing it, since Zarzana is working on the 8-12 weeks time-table. Good information IMO.

Please dont rush it Drew. IMO if he's back w/in that predicted 8week (3 -4 games before the regular season ends i think) period then thats phenomenal enough for me.

Injured center is on the court shooting, but he won't be back for a while.

For the briefest of moments, Coach Phil Jackson offered visions of a hale, hearty Lakers lineup in the near future when asked about Andrew Bynum's progress.

"He was on the floor shooting shots [without jumping]. . . . He looked relatively active for his condition," Jackson said Tuesday. "He was doing pretty well."

Bynum, however, won't be returning from a torn medial collateral ligament in his right knee any time soon. His progress is all relative to a timetable that will keep him sidelined until at least March 30, and possibly as late as April 27.

"Until he's on the floor some time in March, we won't know anything about that," Jackson said. "The healing aspect still takes a while, so that's still something going on. When we feel like he's healed, then to do the therapy and exercises, that's going to take a while."

Bynum, out since Jan. 31, has not done much beyond flat-footed shooting. He is waiting for swelling to decrease in the knee before beginning to ride a stationary bike.

EL SEGUNDO - Lakers coach Phil Jackson was unable to provide a concise update on injured center Andrew Bynum’s condition because Bynum did not show up for Wednesday’s practice.

Although Jackson said is it was possible that Bynum did not know that the players were required to be at the practice facility by 11 a.m., Jackson added that Bynum could have called and found out the time but apparently he did not. Jackson said the situation would be dealt with.

Lakers spokesman John Black said that for several days now Bynum has been involved in a rehabilitation program that includes riding on the stationary bike and using the Precor machine.

Bynum has been out since Jan. 29, because of a torn medial collateral ligament of the right knee. The prognosis when his injury occurred was that Bynum would miss 8-12 weeks.
