2009 what you don't understand is that if we wait untill after the season we are going to have to pay more for him because now he has offers from other teams so throw that out of the books, if he finishes this season with the rangers 100% he isn't coming back. also we are not getting a rental we are trying to get st louis a great goal scorer, did you forget zucc is hurt? whose going to replace him? are you going to wait 10 games to realize that we are gonna struggle to score then say "we shoulda traded for a goal scorer" better trade cally get something back yet be it for 2 years and move on. its business, why your so attached to cally is beyond me, hes got heart but he isn't patrick kane.
when was the last time this team was a seller? The only reason is because the player has overvalued himself, this is not giving up the season, this is making sure we get something for an asset who clearly doesn't want to be here next season
Rangers have a very similar player to Callahan in Miller to replace him. I think Miller will be a very good pro. They also have another player in Lindberg to replace another forward. Lindberg is really good. He gets better every year. Fast if he can bulk up a little can possibly be a good pro. Duclair they just stole. All of them can flat out skate. Cally is not a top skater. He really doesn't fit the team like Richards doesn't. I mean, Boyle on the 4th line is different. Your 4th line grinds. Girardi really shut everybody up when he adjusted to the system. Including me. I thought he wasn't going to do it. I have no problem giving Girardi 6 years, 36 million because he's the type of defenseman that will play a long time. Now, I wasn't for giving Girardi that type of money if they signed Cally. However, once Cally lost his mind, bringing back Girardi is the right move.
They're discussing trading Girardi to Anaheim for Vatanen and I'd assume something else. He's an exciting prospect with a great shot but they'd also need a dman in the deal to fill in the rest of this year. Maybe Sbisa or Allen also plus a draft pick or something.
If Girardi comes back for under $6 mil/year he's truly showing that, unlike Callahan, he wants to remain a Ranger and Dan's probably doing so against the advice of his agent. Girardi in my opinion can easily get $6+ this summer for however many years he wants. Callahan's turning down of Sather's much too generous 5 years $30 mil shows that unlike Girardi, he's all about the money and financial security which is a sound business decision and totally his perogative. What's not to like about Cally? He gets a shot thanks to injuries and through 100% effort on all those intangibles (except scoring) forces Renney to play him but now wants to be one of the highest paid 45-50 point scoring forwards in NHL history. This isn't the Captain Mark Messier asking for top dollar, this is Ryan Callahan, a guy who isn't a top 50 scorer and whose physical play diminishes each year as the average size of an NHL player increases. Heart's not worth an extra $2 mil per year. As far as McIlrath goes I don't see how any credible evaluation can be given with two NHL games under his belt and comparing him to Cam Fowler is ridiculous. Go Figure, Fowler has 25 assists playing for the explosive Duck offense. If you're going to gush about Fowler's superiority to McIlrath ask yourself who would win a fight between the two? because that's why Glen took McIlrath, to clear the crease and keep other teams honest.
Okay, I had a chance to read all your responses. I think most of you missing my point. If we had a different GM, I am with you guys however we have Sather who is going to OVERPAY in he offseason to replace Cali because there will be a huge void after Cali is gone. This will be the same Brashear to replace Colton Orr or Dorsett to replace Prust. It is not all about the numbers, it is about presence which Cali brings. My point was why overpay to replace Cali, instead of overpay to Cali? Cali wants 6.75 for 7 give him 6.5 for 6. I am sure he will accept, but no Sather has to show that he is the stubborn GM who will not budge. And how getting St.Louis is the future? The dude is 90 in hockey years and most of you agree that we cannot win this year anyway. Are you all banking on next year? This whole thing just does not make sense to me and how Girardi is not yet signed is beyond me. The guy is on a top PK unit year after year which is top 10 in the league consistently. Someone said Girardi will not be a top pair on most NHL teams? This is exactly why we do not win, too much tunrover at the core which only occur on this Ranger team. No wonder we suck.
Who gives a rats ass about Cam Fowler. This team is one of the best defensive teams in hockey every year. They drafted a kid in Skjei who is basically a Fowler clone. Better defensively. better skater with a little less offense. Minnesota doesn't use him offensively but he has offensive skill. The team has been run over by guys like Lucic for the past 2 years. What they need is McIlrath. Not Fowler. Get over it already.
