    New Year, Same Canada

Young side steamrolled by Denmark in first match of 2013

TUCSON, Ariz. – A new year, a young, revamped squad and a new coach at the helm. Yet it was more of the same for the Canadian national team on Saturday, as Denmark rolled to an easy 4-0 win in a friendly at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Andreas Cornelius had a hat trick and Kasper Lorentzen added a goal for good measure as a completely Danish Superliga-based squad had its way with a Canadian team that saw six players picking up their first senior caps.

Canada's defense was soft throughout and could manage little resistance despite the presence of veterans Dwayne De Rosario, Terry Dunfield, Dejan Jakovic and Lars Hirschfeld on the pitch.

    Report:
CSA severs ties with 3rd division over match-fixing

FC and the Montreal Impact are likely in the hunt for new leagues for their respective academy teams after the Canadian Soccer Association reportedly has severed ties with the Canadian Soccer League.

According to CBC Sports, the CSA stopped sanctioning the league for a number of reasons – not the least of which are match-fixing allegations surrounding league games over a number of years that is part of a larger match-fixing scandal in Europe.

The Ontario- and Quebec-based CSL represents the third-highest level of soccer in Canada behind MLS and the NASL. Toronto and Montreal both field academy sides in the league.

Under FIFA regulations, any players who play in an unsanctioned league would not be able to participate in a sanctioned leagues like MLS without facing heavy fines.

There are options for TFC and the Impact, however. Some of Montreal’s youth teams are already a part of the US Soccer Federation Development Academy structure. If Toronto want to remain in an all-Canadian league, it would likely mean joining the Ontario Soccer League Elite League.

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC’s Residency is unaffected as it is part of the USL’s Professional Development League

Canada fall 1-0 in rematch against Mauritania
    [IMG]

On a field at a resort in rural Spain, Canada was the better team all over the field against Mauritania except when it matters the most. In the end, Canada’s inability to score once again came back to haunt them as they conceded once to lose 1-0 to Mauritania.

“What was missing was pretty much what’s been missing since a very long time and that’s scoring,” said midfielder Julian de Guzman. “Hopefully that’s something that we can work on going into the next couple camps.”

Unlike Sunday’s game, where took Canada some time to get into, on Tuesday Canada took it Mauritania right off the start and got a chance just a few minutes in when Issey Nakajima-Farran had a shot near the edge of the 18-yard box get saved.

    Canada's Benito Floro:
If Camilo, Gershon Koffie, Felipe, Hassoun Camara are serious, I'm listening

OLIVA, Spain – With an ever-growing list of foreign-born MLS talent saying they may be interested in suiting up for the Canadian national team, new head coach Benito Floro says anyone showing a desire to wear the red and white would be more than welcome.

Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Gershon Koffie already has permanent residency status in Canada, while his club teammate Camilo has already applied. Montreal Impact defender Hassoun Camara also submitted an application for residency, and his club teammate Felipe Martins says he intends to do so next year as soon as he is eligible.

All four players have expressed interest in playing for their adopted country. As Floro wrapped up his first training camp here as Canada's head coach, he said he’s in no way opposed if they wanted to join.

“For me, the person is from two places: Where you were born and grew up and then where he decides to live,” Floro told MLSsoccer.com through a translator on Tuesday as Canada closed camp. “In my mind, [borders don't exist]. It is a delicate subject but for me – if they are very good players and they love Canada and they want to participate, for me, I’ll never have a problem.”

Canada officially announce friendly vs. Australia
at Fulham's Craven Cottage in London in October

The Canadian Soccer Association has confirmed a weeks-old rumor that the Canadian men's national team will face Australia in a friendly on Oct. 15 at Craven Cottage, the home of Fulham FC, in London.

The game was announced on Wednesday evening and will see Canada going up against a Socceroos side coached by former Canada head coach Holger Osieck, who led the Reds to the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup title.

Is red-hot Tosaint Ricketts the answer for CaMNT's scoring woes?

One of the biggest question for the Canadian men’s national team these days is, who will be able to put the ball in the back of the net? Across the pond this past week, a few Canadians made the case that they might be a part of the answer.

Tosaint Ricketts (above) potted his third goal of the season (and third in two weeks) for Bucaspor in their win Monday, while Daniel Haber scored his first goal for Apollon Limassol since joining the Cypriot First Division team this summer.

Marcus Haber was narrowly held off the score sheet after coming on as a sub for Notts County on Saturday; but elsewhere in England’s League One, Iain Hume’s first goal for Preston North End since April 2012 helped lift his side to a 2-1 victory.

In the 2.Bundesliga, the stage was set for a battle of the Canadian big men as Olivier Occean and FC Kaiserslautern faced off against Rob Friend and 1860 Munich on Sunday. However, the clash proved anticlimactic with neither Canuck finding the net.

A bit further down the German pyramid, Caleb Clarke continued his solid form for FC Augsburg II, scoring his third goal in 10 appearances since arriving on a season-long loan from the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Dwayne De Rosario considering overseas interest but remains open to MLS return

Dwayne De Rosario’s time at D.C. United may be over, but he’s not counting out a return to Major League Soccer. That is, if the right opportunity presents itself, of course.

In a phone conversation from Austria, where Canada is training ahead of Tuesday’s friendly against Slovenia, De Rosario confirmed that he is considering overseas options as he looks to continue his club career in 2014, though he declined to be specific.

But the four-time MLS Cup winner and one-time league MVP is also definitely interested in continuing his MLS career. It just comes down to finding the right situation.

“I’ve had an unbelievable experience playing in that league and a great time there, and if it’s time to move on from there, so be it,” De Rosario told MLSsoccer.com. “If not, then I definitely look forward to another year, two, three in Major League Soccer.”

    MLS youngsters Jordan Hamilton,
Maxime Crépeau welcome Benito Floro's new style

A group of energetic teenagers under the watch of a man in his 60s with a reputation as a disciplinarian … it sounds like a recipe for disaster. Or perhaps like a disastrous Hollywood comedy.

As it turns out, the combination describes Canada’s men’s national team during its first training camp of 2014, and by all accounts, it has the makings of a hit.

Head coach Benito Floro brought a roster of mostly untested youngsters to the 10-day, Florida-based camp to evaluate some of the talent that will be available to him in the years ahead. The players – most of whom have little, if any, experience with the senior national team – also got the chance to evaluate Floro, the 61-year-old Spaniard who took over the job in August. With camp set to wrap up on Wednesday, the early reviews are positive.

“He’s amazing,” recently signed Toronto FC striker Jordan Hamilton, 17, told MLSsoccer.com by phone from camp. “He’s taught me so many things in this past week that I’d been doing the past two years, flaws in my game, and he’s corrected them in just a week of watching me play. It says a lot about him.”

    Canada's winless run continues
    [IMG]

Canada arrived in Celje, Slovenia surprisingly confident despite having lost to the Czech Repbulic 2-0 on Friday. Much has been made of the National Team's current run of form, and most glaring throughout 2013 is that only one goal has been scored, by Marcus Haber against Japan back in March. Against the Czechs, Canada was surprisingly able to create some decent opportunities on goal, while at the other end, Lars Hirschfeld was on point and a big reason why the scoreline was kept in check. Slovenia are ranked 30th by FIFA, while Canada now sits 111, a massive disparity and cause for concern that if the Central European nation was on point, this game could get out of hand

Eleven men, long odds, one live rooster.
Remembering Canada’s lone World Cup appearance

In the summer of 1986, Canada’s men’s national soccer team played three games in Mexico for their first (and still only) World Cup appearance. Nearly 30 years later, the men who took the field in red and white remember it like it was yesterday. Leading up to the tournament, the team had talent and experience, but qualification out of CONCACAF was no given. For the Canadians, it all boiled down to a crucial home-and-away series with Honduras.

    Three decades later,
why is Canada still watching the World Cup from home?

THE WORD is MLSsoccer.com's regular long-form series focusing on the biggest topics and most intriguing personalities in North American soccer. This week, contributor Daniel Squizzato examines the beleaguered history of Canadian soccer and tries to explain the many reasons why the country has not qualified for the World Cup in nearly 30 years.

    Peter Montopoli:
Canada has no plans to share World Cup 2026 bid with another nation

The General Secretary of the Canadian Soccer Association made it clear: When Canada bids for the World Cup, it won’t have a dance partner.

Peter Montopoli was in Edmonton Wednesday, speaking to the Chamber of Commerce about the coming U-20 Women’s World Cup and the Women’s World Cup in 2015. But the Canadian Soccer Association’s bid for the 2026 World Cup, which is expected to go to FIFA some time in 2016, also came up.

And, when he was asked about the possibility of submitting a shared bid, Montopoli said the answer is no.

    “It’s a single bid. (http://imgur.com/a/5ZfCR)
It’s Canada, at this moment. It’s Canada, the Canadian Soccer Association that will be bidding, and we will continue along that line. There really have been no discussions on joint bids, either Mexico or the United States. It’s not a position we’re taking. It is a straight bid from the Canadian Soccer Association.”

As the build-up for next year’s CONCACAF Gold Cup begins, Benito Floro, Head Coach of Canada’s Men’s National Team, has named the 23-man squad that will host Jamaica in a Men’s International Friendly on Tuesday 9 September (kickoff 19.30 local time) at BMO Field in Toronto, ON.

This will be the first time Canada will be playing at home in Floro’s tenure and it’s a squad that will provide a healthy mix of players that play at home and abroad.
