Imagine if Oden ends up in South Beach or in Chicago because we didn't offer him anything and he turns into the star we know he can be! Miami could pencil in 6 championships and the bulls atleast 3..

Dave at Blazer's Edge explains what Greg might have meant by saying it's his move:

"Since the only way to retain Oden at all is through the Qualifying Offer (accepted for the single year or rejected and into free agency) and since his best path is clearly to sign that Q.O. for a year and go unrestricted next summer and since the Blazers can't even guarantee what they'll offer him on that longer-term deal until the new CBA is set, I don't see much hope for a happy ending here for the team. If I'm Greg's agent I'm screaming at him to take that one year offer and run."

So if Greg thinks he will be healthy, his best choice is to sign the qualifying offer and then at the end of the year he can decide where he wants to go and how much he will get. The Blazers must make the qualifying offer and have it rejected before they can legally make an offer for a longer term deal; this is why all the power is in Greg's hands.

It is only in his best interest to reject the qualifying and take a long term deal at a lower price if he thinks he might not be healthy and productive. This situation absolutely sucks for the Blazers.

We can still hope that Greg feels some loyalty to Portland and rejects the qualifying and takes the long term deal at a not outrageous price. Or in the ideal (and not remotely possible) world, he could say I'll take the qualifying offer; we'll see how I do in that year and I promise that if I am healthy i will then give Portland first chance to sign me long term.

Sorry that I missed that Papa G, the entire situation has been sort of confusing for me and Dave's was the first thing I read that really clarified it for me.

 

I started thinking about this and it seems to me that actually it is the right and honorable thing for Greg to take the one year qualifying and promise to stay with Portland after that, price dependent on his performance and health in that year.

I mean what if you married someone and shortly after the marriage, that someone became sick or injured and could not contribute financially, sexually, etc to the family for three years. And so you took care of that someone for those three years. Now as this someone is approaching good health he/she says "I can only commit to you for this next year while I am getting completely healthy; then I think I'd like to play the field. Does that seem right??!!

 

Well, actually if I was a GM and he got injured seriously again in this coming year, I would not use a roster spot on him, but that's just me.

I think the best possible deal; if the new CBA would allow it, would be incentives. Maybe a base salary of 8-9 mil per season with perks each season.

1.) 1 million bonus if he averages a double double

2.) 500k bonus for over 1.5 blocks a game

3.) 1.5 mil bonus for averaging more than 13 rebounds a game.

4.) 1.5 mil bonus for playing more than 60 games a season.

Something like that. I don't know if the team would be on the hook for the entire amount (In terms of cap); but if their was an incentive program that could net Oden 12.5-14.5 mil per season, but can drop to 8-10 mil if injured, it would be best for both sides.

 

No, but perhaps we should try to trade for a much better alternative (to Barron) at PF/C, counting on Greg Oden and Camby is not something I am comfortable with - are you?
