Castro's injury opens door for Astros backup Corporan

    "More than 17,000 players have appeared in at least one major league baseball game. Astros catcher Carlos Corporan shares a distinction with fewer than 100 – 81 others, to be exact, according to records dating to 1901.

    Perfection. Corporan has a career batting average of 1.000.

    "It was just one at-bat," Corporan said modestly.

    And Meryl Streep is just an actress. Ricardo Montalban was just an actor. Flavor Flav is just an entertainer. Corporan's one at-bat – and hit – came as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers in a May 6, 2009, game against the Cincinnati Reds.

    "When they mentioned my name making my major league debut, I almost cried at home plate," Corporan said. "That was my dream, and I got it. That was a beautiful moment for me. I'd been working all my life to get that opportunity, and I got it. Now I'm here working, trying to get more opportunities."

    Opportunity landed on Corporan on Friday with the revelation that Astros starting catcher Jason Castro could miss the season with a knee injury. Castro underwent surgery to reconstruct the anterior cruciate ligament and repair a large tear in the medial meniscus cartilage of his right knee and is expected to miss at least six months.

    The Astros signed Corporan, 27, this past offseason as a minor league free agent and insurance policy. With one misstep by Castro in a spring training game in Lakeland, Astros manager Brad Mills is wondering if he'll have to file a claim.

    "We don't really know a whole lot about him," Mills said of Corporan. "We're in a fact-finding situation with everyone as we move forward.""
