No, unless there is some other reason that it matters how much money Reinsdorf pays out when it doesn't count against the Salary Cap or the Luxury Tax?

"$16M for 0/0 in 0 minutes is really overpaying" is the strawman, unless you are a Bulls shareholder or a Reinsdorf heir. Plain and simple.

As fans, it's $0 for 0/0 in 0 minutes. End of story. Boozer counts for $0 against the salary cap, and $0 against the luxury tax. Plain and simple.

So unless you have some explanation for the "$16M for 0/0" comment, then you are the only one guilty of being Mr. Strawman in this thread.

    Inquiring minds want to know...

$16M for 0/0 in 0 is how Reinsdorf sees it. HE is the shareholder (note exactly an heir, he's the guy).

Its interesting how apparently the organization will spend 16 million dollars for nothing but will dump Luol Deng to avoid paying less in luxury tax.

Granted, it gets them in the clear from future repeater penalties when Uncle Jerry decides to pay for that ever elusive "winner."

The Twitter quote thing isn't working for me, so here's a tweet from Mark Deeks who RealGM folks know as Sham:

Boozer's $16mil is included in this amount and the amnesty thing is a new wrinkle, but Reinsdorf is neither new to nor completely averse to paying players to go away.

I wouldn't mind seeing them take a flyer on Xavier Henry. Still young, can shoot, good size.

Which backs up my theory, IMO, that Uncle Jerry's extreme aversion to paying the luxury tax is basically on philosophical grounds.

The owners fight hard to have the tax added to the CBA as a self-policing mechanism, Uncle Jerry being one of the proponents of it, and he behaves as he would like to see all the other owners behave.

When he paid players not to play, they were included in team salaries. They didn't sign players to an equal amount of those Meeks counted.

In this case, the Bulls would not only be paying up to the cap, or below the LT, they're paying another $16M.

Right, I get that. All the more curious that Uncle Jerry will part with 16 mil for nothing but the thought of paying less than that in luxury tax causes the dumping of Luol Deng and a series of some of the fanciest tax avoidance roster filling transactions on record.

Right. I don't get it either. He makes $50M-$60M in profits and won't spend $10M of it one time to save a player like Deng or BG or Asik.

Sure, we all know that, I just didn't think anybody cared how Reinsdorf sees it. Since the team payroll is as high as it can possibly be after Boozer got amnestied, I thought Reinsdorf's pockets were irrelevant.

Why do you care how Reinsdorf sees it?

LOL, the Bulls tried to extend Deng for another three years at what turned out to be his exact market value of $10 million per year. So at least they got some draft picks in return, instead of letting him walk this summer and getting nothing in return, right?

Except for the fact that if Deng would have taken the market-value extension the Bulls offered him in January, JR would have still paid the LT last season.

    I know, facts, schmacts...

The whole history of the team since the breakup of the dynasty is driven by profit, not by pursuing championships. Reading profit motive has to involve Reinsdorf, since he's the guy writing the checks and refusing to pay the LT.

Since you said it again, I'll reply again: The Bulls tried to pay the tax last season, they wanted to keep Deng and pay the tax, they offered him an extension at his exact market value.

But when he refused their offer, they chose to get a few draft picks instead. Brilliant move.

It wasn't his exact market value.

Did Pau sign for his exact market value? I think he signed for $3M/season less, at least.

Ironically, the Heat look like the ECF Bulls now. They have our starting SF and PF. In Noah's place they have Bosh. In Rose's place they have Wade. In Bogans' place they have Chalmers.

Wow, I guess I have to say it yet again.

He tried to keep Deng. Deng wouldn't resign. So they traded him and got draft picks as opposed to losing him for nothing.

    Where's the problem?

They didn't try to pay the tax. We just don't know how they would have gotten under. Which they would have done.
