Pippen: International competition helps development

The Bulls start training camp in two weeks, which is when fans can start gauging what, if any, impact Team USA's World Championship gold medal might have on Derrick Rose's confidence level.

But if history repeats itself, it could be substantial.

Scottie Pippen had already won two NBA titles when he played on the original Dream Team at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. But Pippen still fondly recalls that tournament's impact on his development as a player.

"It was a great experience for me," Pippen said. "Even though they sort of saw me as a rookie to some degree, I got a lot of opportunity to play and defend and to be that one guy. I knew my position on that team. I worked hard. I knew a lot of the players were older players. The knowledge they had in the game was so strong. Their athleticism had diminished a little but they could still play. When I say that, I speak of guys like Larry (Bird) and Magic (Johnson) who were great leaders for that team.

"It was a perfect moment for me because I felt I was still developing as a young player. And to have an opportunity to take my game on an international stage, it was one of the best things that happened to me. It really kept me hungry."

Rose averaged 7.2 points in the World Championships, which culminated Sunday with Team USA's victory over Turkey for the gold medal.

In preparation for the 2010-11 NBA season, the Chicago Bulls will start training camp on Monday, Sept. 27 with their annual Media Day. Chicago's first practice will get underway on Tuesday, Sept. 28 with a two-a-day practice.

Feel-good Monday post: Boozer and Korver talk up hopes, and a birthday note

Can't say these are the most eye-opening interviews, but always good to excitement over the coming season. This time from Carlos Boozer and Kyle Korver (via PBT), the latter continuing what the former started last week in raising expectations for the team into that top tier of the East.

At first blush I immediately went cynical (imagine that) at Korver's mention of 'chemistry' being a defining characteristic of the Bulls, over having elite talent. Anything that acknowledges a disadvantage in talent rubs me the wrong way, since it's the talent that wins. But Korver moreso says they have talent too, but that in addition the sum will be greater than their parts. Makes sense, of course, I'm just strange and still bitter over July.

I'm also strange and bitter about this blog's long and pointless history, so I wouldn't dare celebrate a second 5-year anniversary (the first being a couple years ago, in terms of blogging Bulls)...but on 9/13/05, BaB was officially launched as the first NBA site of SBNation. Since then we've done pretty good. So congratulate yourselves for being a part of the ride and I thank you for letting me drive.

'Melo' out? Nets, not Bulls, seen as likely suitor

Carmelo Anthony's most likely trade destination could be the New Jersey Nets. (MCT)

CBSSports.com reports: The Nuggets' Carmelo Anthony hasn't wavered in his desire to be traded rather than accept a three-year, $65 contract extension offer, according to multiple sources, and Denver privately is looking at which NBA teams would offer the best package of young talent, draft picks and expiring contracts to make a trade.

But although the Bulls and New York Knicks reportedly are Anthony's preferred destinations, people close to the situation say the team with the most realistic chance to put together a deal is the New Jersey Nets.

"They're working the hardest to get a deal done," one of the sources said, with the Philadelphia 76ers possibly being a third team involved.

The Bulls are viewed as "not a realistic candidate" by one source because of their reluctance to part with Joakim Noah.

Isiah: 'Melo will wind up with Bulls or Knicks

Isiah Thomas' formal business affiliation with the New York Knicks was denied by NBA commissioner David Stern, but that doesn't keep the Hall of Fame guard from having an opinion regarding the likely trade destination for Denver Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony.

"I think it will come down to Chicago and New York, whoever can put together the better package," Thomas told the Tribune on Monday. "I would say that a month ago he wasn't as open to Chicago as he is now. I think he has given New York enough time to put something together. But I think it will come down to those two cities."
The New Jersey Nets also have been linked as a possible destination for Anthony.

"I think the Nets have a chance, but in terms of what I think he would really like to be ... in terms of winning and everything else ... I think he would rather win with the Knicks than win with the Nets," said Thomas, who remains the basketball coach at Florida International University in Miami.

Thomas formerly served as head coach and general manager of the Knicks.

Pippen: Bulls shouldn't trade Noah for 'Melo'

Newly minted Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen says the Bulls would be taking a huge gamble if they traded Joakim Noah for Denver's Carmelo Anthony, as they reportedly are considering, and doesn't think he would approve the deal were he the Bulls' general manger.

"I would definitely think about it very hard," Pippen told "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on WMVP-AM 1000. "But I don't know ... if I'm a GM, I probably couldn't pull the trigger based on Carmelo's ... sort of what he's doing now. Based on his reputation, I'd probably have to stay with Joakim because you know that this kid is going to come out to play night in and night out. There's no excuses. He's a great teammate. That's what you want."
Multiple reports say Anthony is determined to leave Denver as a free agent after next season rather than sign an extension and would like to be traded, preferably to either the Bulls or the Knicks. However, the Bulls are said to be unwilling to trade Noah, and the New Jersey Nets have emerged as the front-runner to land Anthony in a trade.

Pippen said Anthony might not be a good fit with the Bulls.

"I think there's been some problems there with him and the (Nuggets') coaching and the organization," Pippen said. "I think that could be a problem when you come to a team like the Bulls, an organization that is still trying to get off the ground and get themselves in a position where they are an established playoff team. You don't want to lose a guy like Joakim and have a guy like Carmelo come here and, hey, he might not like it here. Next year he may be wanting to get out of here and go somewhere else to play.

"I think it would be a huge gamble for the Bulls. It could set them back or it could push them up. I like Joakim, so for personal reasons I would probably keep him."

Pippen is sold on Noah's value to the Bulls.

"I think you have to say that he is one of the top two players on the team as far as value," Pippen said. "He brings a lot to the table. You can't forget that this is a kid who's a winner, who is coming off his college career (with ) two championships (with Florida). He still wants to win, and he plays very hard. He's not the most attractive player in terms of looking at him out on the basketball court. He gets the job done, and he does it at a very high level. You can call him a poor man's Dennis Rodman, to some degree. He's a presence out on the basketball court and you have to appreciate that."
