Bulls add veteran Scalabrine to camp roster

The Bulls will bring nine-year veteran Brian Scalabrine to training camp on a non-guaranteed contract, which only becomes guaranteed if he lands the 13th roster spot, a league source said.

That keeps the Bulls' ongoing discussions with the Trail Blazers regarding disgruntled swingman Rudy Fernandez an option, though one source said it's unlikely that deal will happen. The Bulls have offered a future first-round pick for Fernandez.

Scalabrine, 32, spent the last five seasons with the Celtics, where new coach Tom Thibodeau served as an associate head coach for the last three seasons. Thibodeau values Scalabrine's shooting ability in sporadic spot minutes, as well as his locker room professionalism.

Scalabrine has made four trips to the NBA Finals with the Celtics and Nets and averaged 3.3 points during the regular season.

Report: Houston Rockets enter Melo mix

The Denver Post reports: As the Denver Nuggets' front office works the phones, new destinations for Carmelo Anthony keep popping up. Should the Nuggets trade their all-star forward, the Houston Rockets would be in the mix, an NBA source with knowledge of what is being discussed told the Denver Post.

Various reports have mentioned the Bulls as a destination for Anthony, but the team's unwillingness to include Joakim Noah in a trade might be a deal-breaker.

Analysis: Carmelo chatter continues

At both Gar Forman's news conference announcing the dismissal of Vinny Del Negro and Tom Thibodeau's introductory news conference as Del Negro's successor, two of the first topics mentioned regarding their philosophy for winning basketball were defense and rebounding.

Perhaps that will make clearer why the Bulls have no plans to move Joakim Noah.

That said, depending on who you talk to, the perception the Bulls immediately could close a deal for All-Star Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony if they included Noah in talks is overstated. That's not to say such an offer wouldn't intrigue and entice the Nuggets. It is to say, according to multiple sources, the Nuggets have given little indication to teams they're in a hurry to deal the disgruntled Anthony.

In fact, according to a league source who recently had contact with the Nuggets' organization, there is some hope within the Denver organization that getting Anthony into training camp with familiar faces and the only franchise he has known could ultimately help convince him to sign a still-standing, three-year, $65 million contract extension.

Remember when Kobe Bryant said he would never play for the Lakers again? That was how many championships ago?

There certainly still is a chance Anthony could be dealt, although several league types speculate those chances will increase near the February trade deadline. And though the Bulls aren't dying to trade Luol Deng---Thibodeau, in particular, is high on Deng---they certainly would sign off on a Deng, Taj Gibson and draft picks deal for Anthony.

Denver, at least for now, has little interest in that offer. Which means the Bulls would have to get a third team involved that has interest in Deng---or just be one of the many teams that is pitching exploratory offers at the Nuggets for now.

It's not like the Nuggets are holding a fire sale on Anthony.

As for Noah, the Bulls are trying to extend him, not trade him. Stay tuned. Training camp opens on Monday.

A while back, I was trying to think through those lists of the best/worst Americans of all time, and he struck me as at least a candidate for one of the best. Of course, there were plenty of other journalists of his era that sucked eggs, but as far as I can tell, he was pretty good

Bulls look at veteran swingman Udoka

The Bulls had veteran swingman Ime Udoka in for a workout at the Berto Center on Wednesday, sources said.

No contract offer was made, but it's possible Udoka, who spent last season with the Kings, could secure a training camp invitation.

The Bulls currently have 12 guaranteed contracts and have invited Brian Scalabrine and John Lucas III to training camp on non-guaranteed deals.

Udoka, who also has played for the Trail Blazers and Spurs, is known as a physical perimeter defender.

Noah wants to remain with Bulls

Joakim Noah has heard the talk, pondered the rumors about him being the focus of a possible trade with the Denver Nuggets for star forward Carmelo Anthony.

"It's a strange feeling, because any given day you can always get traded to a city that you really don't know anything about," Noah said Wednesday after speaking to students at Lathrop Elementary School. "But at the same time, you look at the big picture. Things could be a lot worse. But my goal is I want to stay in Chicago. I think we can do something really special here. I hope that I can be a part of it."

Anthony is entering the last year of his contract in Denver and thus far has rejected offers for a contract extension with the Nuggets. The Knicks, Nets, Bulls and most recently the Rockets have been rumored to be interested in dealing for Anthony.

"Obviously, Carmelo is a great player," Noah said. "But we are also very good right now. I really enjoy playing with guys like Luol Deng and Taj Gibson and other guys who are rumored (to be) in that trade. So, yeah, either way it will be fine."

Noah is coming off his best season in the NBA, so the idea of him being the focus of a possible trade is somewhat unsettling to him.

"I think it's part of the business," he said. "I think it is something that happens in sports. I think right now I just have to get ready to control what I can control as a player, and that's getting ready for the season. As far as I know, I am still part of the Bulls today. I look at (being desired by another team) as a compliment, but I want to stay in Chicago.

"I also understand the caliber of player Carmelo Anthony is, so we will see what happens. I am trying to stay positive. And I think that...I can't control what happens in that situation."

Asked if Bulls management has given him any assurances about not being dealt, Noah replied:

"I don't know how much I can really talk about it or anything. But we had good practices today. We're working really hard and just getting ready for the upcoming season."

Thibodeau has had significant say in every Bulls personnel move, and the pressure will be on him to deliver this season. The Bulls have given him wide latitude to operate within the organization.

NBA expands technical foul rules

It's a good thing Rasheed Wallace retired. With the new technical foul guidelines announced Thursday at the referees' annual meeting in Jersey City, N.J., Wallace might not have made it through the first week of the season.

Starting this season the NBA plans on cracking down on excessive complaining to the officials, with such gestures as a player throwing his arms up in the air and "air punches" to draw a technical foul.
According to espn.com, referees have been instructed to call technical fouls for:

• Aggressive gestures, such as air punches, anywhere on the court.
• Demonstrative disagreement, such as when a player incredulously raises his hands, or smacks his own arm to demonstrate how he was fouled.
• Running directly at an official to complain about a call.
• Excessive inquiries about a call, even in a civilized tone.
And consider calling technicals on players who use body language to question or demonstrate displeasure, or say things like, "Come on!"

Ron Johnson, the NBA's senior vice president of referee operations, told espn.com audience research led to the crackdown.

"People expect hockey players to be fighting," Johnson said. "They expect baseball managers to be kicking dirt on umpires. But that's not our game. That's not what our fans want. They tell us in many many ways and I think we have to adjust to meet the needs of our league and our fans. It's a business."

Boozer wants Noah to remain with Bulls

While praising Carmelo Anthony as an "unbelievable" offensive player, new Bulls power forward Carlos Boozer said he would hate to see his frontline mate Joakim Noah moved at the expense of acquiring Anthony.

"I want Joakim Noah to stay," Boozer told WMVP-AM 1000's "Waddle & Silvy Show" on Friday. "I don't want to see Joakim Noah in any other uniform but a Bulls uniform and I'll leave it at that."

Boozer played against Anthony in the Western Conference as a member of the Utah Jazz and from the sound of it, doesn't mind that he'll only see him twice a season with the Bulls.

"Carmelo Anthony is unbelievable and hard to stop offensively," Boozer said. "The thing about 'Melo is he's as pure of a scorer as we have in the game because he can do it in so many ways. He can shoot the 3...he can post up inside...he has great ball-handing ability, he makes his free throws. He can do everything you want an offensive player to be able to do and he offensive rebounds. I don't know what you rank him at, but I'll just say he's a handful to defend when he has the ball in his hands."

Report: Nets in four-way trade talks for Anthony

ESPN.com reports: The Denver Nuggets are discussing a four-team trade that would send Carmelo Anthony to the New Jersey Nets, sources with knowledge of the negotiations told ESPN's Marc Stein.

The proposed deal, which also involves the Utah Jazz and Charlotte Bobcats, would send Nets rookie Derrick Favors, Jazz veteran Andrei Kirilenko and multiple first-round picks to Denver in exchange for Anthony, according to Stein.

The Nets are seeking assurances that Anthony, who can become a free agent in 2011, will sign a long-term deal with the team.
