Bulls confirm Noah's contract extension

The Bulls on Monday officially announced Joakim Noah's five-year contract extension, which was reported by multiple media outlets on Sunday.

"I'm happy, man," Noah said late Sunday. "This is where I always wanted to be."

The roughly $60 million deal -- with incentives that can take it higher -- will go into effect after the 2010-11 season and prevents Noah from becoming a restricted free agent next summer.

"We're pleased because both sides wanted to get this deal done," said Dan Fegan, who, along with Donald Dell, negotiated the deal with Bulls management.

Noah was the ninth overall pick in the 2007 NBA draft and has become the heart and soul of the Bulls' defense and rebounding.

"Joakim is such an integral member of our team and we are very pleased to have reached an agreement with him," general manager Gar Forman said in a statement. "His presence, both on and off of the court, is immeasurable and we look forward to him to continue to improve and develop his game."

Noah: 'Bulls definitely did me right' with new deal

A beaming Joakim Noah faced reporters after the Bulls' practice Monday at the Berto Center.

That's what five years of security and roughly $60 million to play the sport he loves in the city and organization he likes playing for will do.

"It's very exciting," Noah said. "I'm happy I'll be here for a while. And I feel like the Bulls definitely did me right. I promise I'm going to give 150 percent every time I'm out there. I understand this is a lot of money and responsibility. I'm excited for the challenge.

"It's always very weird when negotiations are going on. I feel I understand there's a collective bargaining agreement going on next year, so not a lot of players from my class got extensions. They definitely did it because they like me.

"I feel it would've been better if Carlos (Boozer) didn't get hurt. But that's part of the game. It's on me and a lot of other players to step up and get the team to where it needs to be."

Noah admitted the ongoing collective bargaining agreement negotiations played a factor in his decision to sign for less than his camp first requested, although sources said incentives can take the package higher.

"When people put numbers like that in front of you, it's very hard to say no," Noah said. "You have to keep things in perspective. Some people are telling you, 'No, don't take it.' But I feel I did the right decision.

"I really didn't want (neogitations to go to Oct. 31 deadline). I'm really happy with the deal. I wanted to get it out of the way and focus on the season. People tell you, 'Don't worry about it.' But that's easier said than done."

Noah and the Bulls begin their exhibition schedule Tuesday night against the Bucks in Milwaukee. Coach Tom Thibodeau said Ronnie Brewer will sit a sore right hamstring and veteran Keith Bogans will start at shooting guard.

Jazz express support for Boozer after latest injury

The Salt Lake Tribune reports: Members of the Jazz wished former teammate Carlos Boozer a speedy recovery from his latest injury. Boozer, who spent six injury-plagued season in Utah, is expected to miss eight weeks after breaking a finger in a fall.

"It's unfortunate," point guard Deron Williams said. "We wish him the best and hopefully he'll get back soon."

Boozer has missed 146 of a possible 656 regular-season games over eight NBA seasons.

"I've always had a difficult time trying to figure out why people think it was bad on his part," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "When you make a lot of money, people expect you to play when you're not able to. I think that happened here a little bit (and) made it tough."

Bulls hoping Boozer returns sooner than expected

Carlos Boozer underwent surgery on his broken right pinky finger Tuesday morning and Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said he is hopeful the All-Star forward might be able to return earlier than first expected.

"From what we heard (the surgery) went well," Thibodeau said after Tuesday's shoot-a-round practice at the Berto Center. "So we are encouraged about that. So now it's just a matter of him going through his rehab."

Asked about Boozer's projected return, Thibodeau replied, "We're not quite sure. It could be anywhere from six to eight to 10 weeks. Once he gets his cast off and all that ... his conditioning should be OK because he can run and do all that stuff. But then his hand has to show the ability to take a hit and all that. So we're thinking 6-to-8 weeks."

Bulls' Rose relishes Team USA memories

Derrick Rose says his legs are "just a little fatigued" after spending the summer helping Team USA capture a gold medal in Europe. But the Bulls' All-Star guard, who turned 22 Monday, said he had fun on and off the court throughout the adventure.

"There were only about three players who weren't around our age," Rose said after Tuesday's shoot-a-round prior to the Bulls' preseason opener at Milwaukee. "That was Chauncey (Billups), Tyson (Chandler) and Lamar Odom. Everybody else was 22 or 21, so we were always around each other.

"It felt like a college team. If we weren't eating together, we were shopping together, or we were just in each other's rooms playing games and stuff like that. The experience was fun, the coaching staff was great and I was blessed to be on that team."

Rose said he and his teammates were able to navigate around the language, food and cultural differences throughout the foreign cities.

"We had translators to do that," he said. "But, if anything, we really didn't have to go anywhere because we had chefs to cook our food for us. If we wanted to go out and shop, some countries knew a little more English than others."

Ex-Bulls guard Pargo released by Hornets

The New Orleans Hornets released guard Jannero Pargo on Tuesday, bringing their roster to 16 players.

The 30-year-old played in 63 games for the Bulls last season, averaging 5.5 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. A free agent, Pargo signed with the Hornets before training camp but the club apparently passed because he was not fully recovered from off-season knee surgery.
"We want to thank Jannero for his effort and time here in New Orleans during camp," said Hornets general manager Dell Demps. "Unfortunately, he is not operating at full speed due to a pre-existing injury. To his credit, Jannero tried to come back ahead of schedule, but after taking with him and our medical staff, we feel that it is in Jannero's best interest that he completes his rehab.

Over his seven-year career, the Arkansas product has averaged 6.6 points, 1.5 boards and 2.0 assists per game in 379 contests with the Lakers, Raptors, Bulls and Hornets.

Pargo spent the 2008-09 season playing in Russia and Greece.

Report: Bulls' Boozer files for divorce

The Salt Lake Tribune reports: Bulls forward Carlos Boozer has filed for a dissolution of marriage from his wife, Cindy, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

Proceedings for the divorce began Aug. 13, according to Miami-Dade County circuit court records.

A Bulls spokeswoman told the paper the team had no comment about Boozer's pending divorce.

Boozer underwent successful surgery Tuesday to repair a broken right pinkie finger.

Preseason preview and open game thread #1: Bulls at Milwaukee Bucks

And it's back. Sortof. I assume the vitriol, passion, and poor grammar of the traditional BaB game thread will take a couple weeks to mold into regular season form. But still, it's a good feeling.

Bulls open their preseason in Milwaukee to face their likely best competition in the Central Division, the Bucks.

Unfortunately for both sides (and for us), lots of names are out. We already know about Boozer and Ronnie Brewer being out for the Bulls, and CSNChicago's Aggrey Sam reported this afternoon that Bogut, Maggette, and Salmons are out for the Bucks.

So it's Rose/Bogans/Deng/Taj/Noah to start. Just what we envisioned when gearing up for the summer of 2010...well at least we get to see Korver, Watson, Asik, and Thibodeau for the first time.

Bucks lead Bulls at half

MILWAUKEE --- Preseason basketball often is less about the score than the play. Nevertheless, score is kept and the Bulls trail the Bucks 42-39 at halftime.

Luol Deng has by far been the best Bull on the court---and not just because he's the leading scorer with 12 points. He hit a 3-pointer, he tallied a steal and he took two charges in the first quarter alone. In short, he's been active.

Kyle Korver came in to provide offense off the bench, although he missed a wide-open layup on a nice feed from Deng. Korver has 11 points and got to the line five times, making all five.

Derrick Rose and Brian Scalabrine were the other standouts, scoring 10 and four points, respectively.

With Carlos Boozer back in Chicago after undergoing successful surgery on the fifth metacarpal on his right hand and Ronnie Brewer sitting with a sore right hamstring, the game marked the Bulls debuts of coach Tom Thibodeau, Keith Bogans, C.J. Watson, Korver, Omer Asik, Scalabrine and Kurt Thomas.

Asik picked up an offensive foul for an illegal screen shortly after entering and has one rebound and one turnover in eight minutes thus far, Before the game, Thibodeau said Boozer's injury would lead to plenty of preseason playing time for Asik.,

Bucks 92, Bulls 83: First look observations on new guys Korver and Watson, and some o

The Bulls and Bucks played a pretty anemic and sloppy game Wednesday night, with the final score not mattering much when you figure the entire 4th quarter was mostly scrub squadron. And it being preseason and all.

So on to a bunch of observations:

A great anti-welcome to Neil and Stacy being back on my TV. As insufferable as ever. At least Stacy can no longer give Taj Gibson an extra first name of 'the rookie' any more, so there's that.

A sloppy game, yes. But 24 turnovers for an opponent is an impressive work of defense whether a few were unforced or not. Bulls looked solid on that end tonight.

Offense was a different story, and expected: when celebrating the end of the inside scoring problem with Boozer in the fold, it follows to assume it's still there with Boozer out. Bulls looked to be getting open looks in the first half, but they were still long two-point jumpers.

Not much to to add on Rose or Noah. Rose didn't seem to be looking for his supposed summer pet project, the 3-point shot (attempting one), which is fine.

Luol Deng may have been the best starter of the night, 16 points on 10 shots, and 3 of those shots were behind the arc. I don't recall any of his jumpers coming with his feet on the line. Also drew a couple charges.

Kyle Korver had the most impressive debut of the new guys. I certainly see him being more than a spot-up shooter and more like a legit 6th man if he plays like this: he was working consistently off screens and has a nice array of moves to get his shot off. Only hit one three-pointer but hit 7 foul shots, was not expecting that. Should he actually be in the starting lineup if Brewer is hurt? Maybe, Bogans didn't impress and Korver's shooting would really be helpful with the starters (especially with Boozer out). I'm guessing they figure Brewer will be back soon enough, so it's best to have Korver learn his role now. I was pretty impressed with his ability to be a #1 option on a bench lineup.

As far as the other new guys: CJ Watson filled in fine as the backup PG, I didn't notice any glaring weaknesses in bringing the ball up and initiating the offense. Didn't shoot well and was outplayed by free agent contemporary Keyon Dooling, but Watson gets extra credit from me for a nice steal on Purdue scum Chris Kramer. Omer Asik didn't have a great line, and picked up some tough early fouls...but he didn't look overmatched, either. And he showed that quick leaping ability on his one field goal that is very encouraging. Kurt Thomas and Brian Scalabrine will continue to do what they do (though I didn't know Scal was such a whiner to the refs, must be the Celtic in him). Interesting to note that while Asik was first of those three off the bench in the 1st half, he was last to get in during the 2nd half.

Taj Gibson had to leave the game in the 2nd half due to back trouble. Early reports are he's fine, but that's obviously scary given Boozer's injury. Up until that point Drew Gooden was frequently schooling him, too.

Special anti-shoutout to Sam Smith, who had this to say in the first half:
Not sure what it means, but I've never seen so many Bulls bench guys leaping up for shots made. Betcha Heat doesn't have that spirit.
Bonus bus vouchers to Sam's rest home to figure out what that actually does mean. Besides the smell of ham and cheese.

James Johnson...still too aggressive on both ends. Closes out too recklessly on defense, immediately goes to a dribble-drive on offense. Not a good start for him.

John Lucas barely played, and the rest of the non-guaranteed (save Scal) didn't play at all.

Johnson: Analyzing Bulls' preseason opener

Anyone wondering how Tom Thibodeau earned his reputation as a defensive whiz needed only to hear his comments after the Bulls' 92-83 loss to the Bucks in Tuesday's preseason opener.

The Bulls scored 27 points off 25 turnovers and kept the score in a winnable spot. But all Thibodeau wanted to talk about afterward was poor team defense and rebounding. The Bulls allowed 50.8 percent shooting and were outrebounded 42-27.

"The help was not there," Thibodeau said. "We allowed the ball to get to the rim and when you are not there you allow a high percentage. We have to play 24 seconds of defense. We gave up several baskets at the end of the shot clock. It starts with our defense and we cannot be pleased with our defense and rebounding. That's two areas we have to shore up."

Here are some other observations after one preseason game:

*Luol Deng likes the offense.

Relegated to stationary spot-up shooting often in Vinny Del Negro's sets, Deng went back to his active, cutting self. He finished with 16 points and four steals and also took two charges. Deng long has said active offense leads to active defense for him.

"I really think this offense fits us," Deng said.

*Kyle Korver will play a lot.

Korver shot 7-for-12 from the field and 7-for-7 from the line for a team-high 22 points. More important, he spaced the floor merely with his presence. The Bulls hadn't seen that since Ben Gordon left.

"I don't think I've had that many plays run for me in a long time," Korver said. "I was loving it."

*Brian Scalabrine is a lock to make the team.

Not only was Scalabrine the only non-guaranteed player to see action other than John Lucas playing the final seven seconds after C.J. Watson fouled out, but Scalabrine made several heads-up plays and knocked down 2-of-5 shots in 20 minutes. He probably won't play that much once the regular-season starts. But you can see the comfort level Thibodeau has with him.

*The Bulls need a second ball-handler.

Watson struggled in that role, marrying six assists with four turnovers and other poor decisions. Granted, it's just one game. But this is where the Bulls will most miss Kirk Hinrich, in town with the Wizards on Friday. Hinrich consistently and ably aided Derrick Rose with ball-handling responsibilities. Both Watson and Keith Bogans struggled in that role against the Bucks.

*Thibodeau is creative -- and intense.

Not only was he up pacing the sidelines and arguing calls late as if it were a regular-season game, two players said he drew up new plays in huddles that they hadn't yet seen. Also, Thibodeau called timeout with under 30 seconds remaining and the game decided to try a new play, which had Omer Asik cutting backdoor to take a drop pass from Korver off a screen.

If the Bucks hadn't fouled Asik, he would've dunked it.

Of course, Asik missed both free throws, which seemed fitting on a night of more negatives than positives for the Bulls.

The Stanley Cup is a gift that just keeps on giving: Credit the Blackhawks with a big assist for boosting Chicago back into its rightful spot as No. 1 in the Sporting News' 17th annual Best Sports Cities rankings.

The Hawks' first Cup championship since 1961 was cited, along with the rise of Derrick Rose and the Bulls, for helping Chicago dethrone 2009 champion Pittsburgh at the top of the rankings. The rest of the top 10: Boston, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Dallas/Fort Worth, New York, Phoenix/Tempe, Atlanta, Denver/Boulder and Detroit/Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti."The Bears have had some down years, but they always sell tickets," Hall of Famer Dick Butkus told TSN. "You go to a Blackhawks game, whether they're good or bad, the fans are there. The Bulls sucked for a while until Michael Jordan came, but we still had the team and the people would go. ... And Cubs fans ... are they nuts? Why do they go there? I'll tell you why, because they represent their city."

Factors included in the rankings are each teams' regular-season won-lost records, postseason appearances, bowl appearances and tournament bids, championships, applicable power ratings, attendance and "fan fervor."

Chicago last claimed the No. 1 spot in 2006.
