Magic's Pietrus, Richardson out vs. Bulls

The Orlando Sentinel reports: Mickael Pietrus and Quentin Richardson won't play tonight for the Magic vs. the Bulls, Stan Van Gundy said.

Van Gundy said he'll employ a starting lineup of Jameer Nelson at point guard, Vince Carter at shooting guard, Rashard Lewis at small forward, Brandon Bass at power forward and Dwight Howard at center.

Pietrus tweaked his right wrist Thursday night; Richardson has a thigh contusion from getting hit by Gerald Wallace on a layup the other night.

Bulls' Gibson sits out 2nd straight game

ORLANDO -- Taj Gibson will miss his second straight game for the Bulls as he nurses a sore right heel. That means Omer Asik will once again start at center alongside Luol Deng and Joakim Noah tonight vs. the Magic.

Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said Gibson's misfortune gives him an opportunity to look at different front-court combinations.

That frontcourt will face a much-more difficult task tonight in Orlando playing against the likes of Magic All-Star center Dwight Howard.
Defending Howard will likely be Noah's responsibility, but Asik and reserve Kurt Thomas will also be called upon to fluster the all-star.

"Dwight Howard overpowers a lot of guys," Thibodeau said. "... He sets great screens, rolls hard to the basket. It's not just Joakim. It's everybody else helping out. We've got to get back in front of the ball, we got to protect the paint ... your body position against him is critical. We'll give him the appropriate help."

Bulls Game Day: Trail Magic 51-23 at halftime

ORLANDO -- If the Bulls were looking for positives from Saturday's first half against the Magic, the only one they could find may be this:

At least nobody got hurt.

That's about the only thing that went right for the tired and troubled Bulls, who found themselves trailing 51-23 at the break.

Only one Bulls starter scored and that wasn't much: Derrick Rose contributed four points on 2 of 5 shooting. James Johnson was 2 of 11 shooting off the bench for a Bulls squad that shot 25.6 percent from the floor and looked sluggish in every way possible.
Of course the Bulls didn't arrive at their Orlando hotel until about 3 a.m. following Friday night's 109-105 overtime loss to the Mavericks. And for the second straight game, they were playing without the services of Taj Gibson, who is nursing a sore right heel back to health.

That meant more playing time for 7-foot Bulls rookie Omer Asik, but Asik didn't impress. He lasted a little more than 2 minutes before picking up his second foul. He picked up his third foul with 2:04 left in the first quarter when Dwight Howard took it strong to the hole.

Vince Carter looked in mid-season form for the Magic and had 21 points at the break. He hit his first five shots from the field and punctated the half with a driving layup as time expired.

C.J. Watson had 11 points off the bench for the only Bulls' performance of note.

Bulls coach on Gibson's heel: 'I think he's fine'

The Bulls should have forward Taj Gibson back before Wednesday night's exhibition at Toronto and he could be practicing as early as Monday.

Gibson has missed two straight preseason games nursing a sore right heel.

"I think he's fine," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said following Saturday night's 105-67 thrashing by the Magic. "Like he said (Friday), if this were the regular season he would be playing. It's more precautionary and he said he could've gone today."
The Bulls (2-4) needed all the frontcourt help they could find against the Magic, who scored a preseason-high 44 points in the paint. The Magic scored from everwhere else, too, shooting 62.3 percent from the floor.

"They shot 62 percent throughout the whole game," Derrick Rose said. "Defensively is what er have to be known for. Around the league, we want to be known for getting after people from the beginning of the game and throughout the game. We want them to know it is going to be a tough game. Tonight was not our night."

Bulls' Korver buys $1.38M Glencoe mansion

Bulls guard and forward Kyle Korver has paid $1.38 million for a 16-room mansion in Glencoe that once was listed for $2.95 million.

Korver, 29, signed a three-year, $15 million contract during the summer to join the Bulls from the Utah Jazz. Now, he has become the rare Bull to buy in Glencoe. Most Chicago-area homeowning Bulls over the years have bought downtown or in other northern suburbs like Northbrook, Highland Park and Lake Forest.

Ex-Bull Allen recalls irregular heartbeat scare

Magic forward Malik Allen said he hadn't thought about what happened to him in Orlando three years ago.

And that's a good thing. It means Allen's ticker is ticking like it should.

Allen was with the Bulls in 2007 when he suddenly left the bench during the second quarter of a game against the Magic. He had developed an irregular heartbeat -- heart arrhythmia -- and had to be taken to an Orlando hospital for an eventual two-day stay after being evaluated by Magic team doctors.

Allen, 32, said he started feeling his heart racing during warm-ups and was light-headed through the first quarter that night. He felt "a little jumpy," but figured it was just typical game-night excitement.

Photo: Malik Allen during the 2010 season with the Nuggets. (AP)But he headed to the locker room before then-coach Scott Skiles -- a former Magic guard who, coincidentally, also has had issues with heart arrhythmia -- sent him into the game in the second period.

"I thought, 'If I go in, I don't know what might happen,' " Allen said. "It was the first time it ever happened to me. My heart felt like it was jumping out of my chest."

Cardiologists in Chicago later diagnosed his condition as atrial fibrillation, the most common type of arrhythmia, affecting about 2.2 million Americans.

Obviously, Allen passed all the tests and is fine today.

He said he has only had to use medication once to blunt a mini-episode since that scary night in Orlando.

You don't have to mention the names of Hank Gathers or Reggie Lewis -- two players who died of heart trouble -- to remind Allen of the seriousness of the issue. Hakeem Olajuwon and Aaron McKie played with an arrhythmia like Allen's.

His former Bulls teammate Eddy Curry, now a Knick, also has dealt with an irregular heartbeat.

Said Allen, "You never want to play with your heart."

Gibson returns to practice; Korver out

Taj Gibson returned to Bulls practice Monday after sitting two games with a sore right heel. The team had termed his absence "precautionary."

"He's moving great, no problems," coach Tom Thibodeau said. "Hopefully, he'll remain pain-free. We felt he had been making steady progress and we had an opportunity to get him five days off with the day off (Sunday) and we felt it was the smart thing to do."

However, the disjointed nature of Bulls camp continued with Kyle Korver sitting out practice because of a cyst in his ankle. Korver said he recently had a cortisone shot to address the issue, which has affected his shooting of late. After his hot start, Korver is 2 for 11 in his last two games and hasn't moved as well.

"He's laboring a little," Thibodeau said. "His ankle is sore. Offensively, he's been terrific. Defensively, he still has work to do."

Thibodeau: Bulls need to be more prepared

New Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau was not very pleased with Saturday night's blowout loss in Orlando, even though it was a preseason contest.

"I think there was disappointment on everyone's part," said Thibodeau following Monday's practice at the Berto Center. "We know we're capable of playing much better than we did. We have to ask ourselves, 'Were we as prepared as we need to be?' You can look to the back-to-back (games) and say, 'Ah, we got in late.' You know what? That's what you face during the season. I think the great teams are the ones that can overcome those obstacles. There are going to be challenges every day in this league."

Ignored Destruction in Orlando, Monday practice injuries, and more links

Saturday night's result could've been seen so far away that even I saw it. Just a bad set of circumstances, starting with the game not counting and all. And since I can work in a theory that nicely coincides with selective laziness, since I didn't watch the game I will choose to pretend it didn't happen. Bulls by the Horns questions the effort (with help from Rose doing the same), but to me it's extremely rare when I believe this team isn't trying. Heck, they tried for Vinny Del Negro: it's that type of roster the Bulls put together.

The night before in Dallas didn't end with a victory but I thought there were moments where the offense didn't just look good, but fantastic. With Boozer out, this really at times becomes the democratic ball-movement orgy that Bulls braintrust idealizes. It'll be sporadically effective, but when it's working it looks good: especially with Luol Deng and Keith Bogans hitting as many 3-pointers as they have been.

What is of tangible concern was Taj Gibson missing both weekend games, but he returned to practice today and the idea that this was tied to his foot troubles last year was downplayed throughout. But is that better that he has two separate instances of foot trouble? Likely not, and big man health will be a big story pretty much all year.

And to add to that story, Kyle Korver sat out today's practice with an ankle injury. So that's great.

Kelly Dwyer with his updated Bulls preview, citing pretty significant concern over Boozer. Not that he'll not come back, just the possibility that he won't be 'right' all year.

New NBA rule suits ex-Bulls guard Gordon to a 'T'

Former Bulls guard Ben Gordon has an unusual perspective on the NBA's new technical foul rules.

The NBA said technical fouls will be expanded to include "overt" player reactions to referee calls. The rule is intended to cut down on excessive complaining by players, with an emphasis on when players throw their hands in the air or demonstrate how they were fouled by hitting their own arms.

Do that and you get a 'T."

Of course, there has been some grumbling from players -- but not from the Pistons' Gordon.

"I'm all for it, and I think it will make the game go a lot smoother," Gordon said when he was asked about the new guidelines last week. "There are times when guys are complaining a bit excessively. It kind of slows the game down. It messes with the flow of the game."

Gordon even said it might help him.

"I won't struggle with it, but I'm hoping some guys who are used to arguing with refs and trying to beg for calls and stuff, hopefully it will affect their game a little bit more," Gordon added. "It will give me an extra edge."

The league also has upped the ante when it comes to fines. The first five technicals cost $2,000 each, then it's $3,000 for the next five and $4,000 for Nos. 11-15. At 16, a player is suspended one game for every two technicals and receives a $5,000 fine.

Ben Wallace said there would be a period of adjustment.

"It wouldn't be right if we didn't test the waters," Wallace said. "That's what's going to happen. Some guys are going to test the waters a little bit, and some guys are going to watch games to see what's allowed and what's not allowed."

Bulls will open kiosk at Woodfield Mall

The Chicago Bulls announced today that they will open a kiosk, called “The Bull Market,” at Woodfield Mall on Tuesday, October 19th at 10 a.m. The kiosk will feature official Bulls merchandise and be located in the Nordstrom wing of the Mall.

The kiosk is an extension of the flagship retail location by the same name located at the United Center which is open during Bulls games. The Woodfield Mall is located at 5 Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, and open Monday-Saturday between 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

John Wall’s been all the rage so far, and justifiably so. It feeds the basketball imagination, as we know in Chicago, when a rookie comes in with that sort of speed and explosiveness and makes the game even faster.

Report: Bulls still in mix for Carmelo Anthony

ESPN.com reports: While the Knicks have made significant progress in their bid to acquire Carmelo Anthony from the Nuggets, a source told ESPN.com that the Bulls remain in the mix. But the source said the contract extension the Bulls reached this month with Joakim Noah would preclude him from being included in any deal for Anthony.

The Knicks' proposals reportedly feature packages including Anthony Randolph, the expiring contract of Eddy Curry and a first-round draft pick they would acquire from a third team, with Danilo Gallinari also possibly being included.
