Same here. But he has to WANT to play here, and he has to WANT to work with Kelly. And neither of those two things looks likely at this point. And if he's got neither the passion, the will to succeed here, or the trust in Kelly, then it's all pointless.

I'm comfortable rolling with Gabbert right now. He looked decent last season and, with a proper coach like Kelly, I'm very eager to see how much better he can improve. He was already studying the playbook and watching tape this off-season before camp. He sees his opportunity, and he WANTS it. And I love that. So let's roll with him.

I was Kap's biggest supporter, even last year when he went to utter shit. But I'm quickly losing patience with him. This year is his final year, for me, to show that he wants something from this franchise, and that he wants to improve and succeed. If he doesn't study plays on the sidelines like last year, then puts a shit performance on the field, then I'm done with him.

For me, this year is his final chance to show what he can do. And the last year I'm supporting him if he fails to produce.

Here's a start: 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick 'kind of digs Chip Kelly'

If he's smart (which is kind of the biggest question right now), he'll figure it out that Chip could be his ticket to success in this league.

I agree. But I'm still taking a "wait and see" approach. He's working at Camp while he recovers, so that's something at least.

My only worry with kaep is his maturity off the field. He needs to put aside the thug life shit and he could be really good in chips offense.

The fuck?! The dude spends his time doing charities! He doesn't go to parties like Aldon and Johnny Freeagent. Seriously, this is one of the dumbest things I've read all week. He's one of the classiest people in the world.

I hope you're not judging him by how he wears his hat?

    49ers competition for starting job.

Sounds like Kap and Gabbert will be in an open competition for the starting job. I think we expected that.

By that standard, I would be lumped into the generality. :MARIS61:

Yep. And I expect Gabbert to get the start this season. He's been studying the playbook diligently, and he's making huge efforts (from what I'm hearing). He really wants this, and I'm excited to see him get the start.

It will be very interesting to see what happens with Kap. I don't want him to leave, but at the same time, I want him to be happy and to be somewhere where he's going to have success. And I don't want the 9ers shelling out $14M/year for a bench warmer if he doesn't get the start.

Chip loves having mobile quarterbacks in his no-huddle offense. I know Kap is mobile, but I must confess I don't know that much about Gabbert and his ability at QB.

However, having a quarterback with intelligence, some mobility, and an accurate arm will go a long way for most teams. Sam Bradford did well in his first season with the Eagles and Sanchez had his best season with Coach Kelly. Perhaps Gabbert will have a breakout year with the new offense.

I agree. And Gabbert can MOVE when he wants to. He's about the same frame as Kap, but his legs are a little thicker. He can still scramble and run though, but it's not his first instinct.

Check out the run he made against Chicago last year:

I love the way he makes as if he's going to slide, and then blows pass them for the score.

And he's got accuracy too...and a hell of an arm:

And that was under Tomsula. Imagine what he can do with Kelly......:bgrin::clap::irock:

Alright, yeah, that hotel hooker business was not very cool. No charges were filed, and nobody was punished, but still: wasn't very cool either way. Don't pick up prostitutes and things like that won't happen.

I dont know much about gabbert but i think kaep is built perfectly for chips offense. Man, how cool would it be if we still had lamichael james? If gabbert is as good as you make him sound i certainly think we have a good problem getting to choose a qb from 2 good ones. Im just glad we got some lineman. Man we need some good o line for chips offense

Dude, James SUCKED. I'm sorry, but the dude was just strait up AWFUL. He went to Miami, and they put him on the practice squad before cutting him entirely, and now he's a FA, and nobody's knocking on his door. For good reason.

I know he balled out at Oregon, but some guys just don't do well at the big leagues. And he was a classic example.

Like you said: we definitely have a good problem, and it's a great problem to have deciding which QB to roll with. Many disagree that Kap would succeed in Kelly's offense, but I think he would. I can't wait to see him play in it, but I'm comfortable moving forward with Gabbert right now.

James was too fumble prone to make it against nfl tackles. But maybe chip could motivate him. Either way hyde is a beast if he stays healthy, certainly rather have him.

There are reports that the front office is going to make Kaep 3rd string if he doesn't beat Gabbert so they don't have to pay him about 2 MIL (over the course of the year) in roster or game-day bonuses. I think they should have taken (almost) anything for him in trade instead. Now they are basically going to be doing what WAS did to RGIII last year.

To me, Jame's problem wasn't his fumbling. He lacked even the most basic footwork, vision, and patience to play the RB position. And he NEVER got better; even the slightest.

I follow all the blogs daily, and I haven't heard anything like this. But, if it is indeed true, then what a miserable way to go.

Whether or not they want to pay him is irrelevant. As of April, he's guaranteed a very large sum of money. $14M, IIRC. The 9ers HAVE to pay that.

But here is the gist of it:
Yes but they have some money they don't have to pay if they sit him (some bonuses written into his contract).

Grant Cohn? Sorry, but I trust his objectivity and journalistic integrity about as much as I trust Hillary of being an honest Politician. He's notorious for writing garbage and smack about the 9ers.

Kap is going to get paid this year, regardless if he's a backup or a starter. But I don't see our newly drafted 6th round rookie taking the backup role from Colin and negating him to a 3rd stringer. Not gonna happen.
