You're talking about a single thread where some people are positive about this extension for different motives , i'm talking about the overall impression i get from this forum. I don't live in the US, so this forum and some facebook comments is what i base my impression upon.
For now, I appreciate that the Blazers have 2 high profile sports ambassadors that actually rep the city. They are generally well-liked, media savvy and don't give canned responses At the end of their contract they will be at 11+ yrs, with a chance of being a life time Blazer. That could help long after their playing days are done, keeping the culture they've built alive. Possibly mentoring future players here once they move beyond playing CJ is also VP of the players association. It says a lot about how players feel about him. I don't see much dislike coming from other teams fans either I could see CJ being on TV once his basketball playing days are done. I think he would be better than most players who go that route. It also would be nice to have a Blazer player commentating again
He realizes a lot of his skills overlap Dame's. It's nobody's fault. When your best and second best player overlap a lot, people will want to trade lesser of the two. It's not about gratitude--it's about fit. I think CJ realizes that. I think he also knows it's kind of a can't-lose situation. If he's eventually traded, he'll go to a team that wants to make him a featured guard. If he doesn't, well, he's doing pretty well in Portland. Personally, I feel like Philly will eventually want to deal Ben Simmons. CJ would be a fantastic fit there.
Ben simmons will be a terrible fit anywhere unless they invest in always having 3-4 shooters on the court with him. Giannis this year dominated the way he did because of that. Really if your best player shoots as bad as they do, you better surround them with lots and lots of shooters.
I was gonna make a snarky comment like "Didn't he have only one really good game in the playoffs?". Then I thought I better check. Besides that great last game against Denver, he scored 30 in the 6th game (also an elimination game, obviously) on 50% shooting and averaged 26 points a game and 6 rebounds and three assists over the series Against OKC he averaged 24 points a game with 5.4 rebounds and 4 assists, on 45% shooting overall and 43.6% on threes. He wasn't so good against the Warriors but in the final elimination game scored 26 shooting 45/55/100 while averaging 4.5 assists for the series.
I'm wondering about something: it was said a few times in this thread that signed an extension for less money than he could have. Is that really true? " The salary in the first year of a veteran extension may be any amount up to 120% of the player's previous salary5, or 120% of the estimated average salary (see question number 31), whichever is greater, but no more than the player's maximum salary in that season (i.e., the maximum salary the player can receive if he were to sign a new contract that year as a free agent" http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q58 ok then CJ's 'previous' salary (last season) was $25,759,766 120% of his previous salary is $30,911,719. That would be his base salary and 3 years of his base salary would total $92,735,158. he'd earn 3 max step raises of $2,472,937 which would total $7,418,813 that would make his base salaries + step raises $100,153,971. Is it just coincidence that CJ's deal is a 3-year/100M deal or did he get a max extension?
Pretty sure the "previous year salary" referenced in that clause is not the salary of the year prior to the extension being signed, but the year prior to the extension taking effect, ie, the final year of the existing contract.
In a generation where "hate" is defined as disagreeing with you, the nuance on CJ gets lost. I don't dislike CJ. I'm just not 100% sold that having two short guards, where at least one isn't a plus defender (although Dame seems to be taking on that challenge) can get to the promise land. I don't hate CJ, I don't hate CJ and Dame, I just would prefer to have one of them be taller and a better defender. The NBA is changing and I could be wrong about how that works. For better or worse we are locked in on CJ. I appreciate his commitment to Portland and hope they can find a way to compete for a title.
His max extension would be $114 mil. You are also not accounting for the maximum raise a player may or may not get each year over the starting salary. I believe an NBA player signing a new contract (or an extension) with his existing team can receive an increase over the base of anywhere from zero to 8%
He did consider the raises. I think a faulty assumption simply caused him to calculate based on the wrong maximum potential starting salary.
yes, when you start off with the wrong base salary that the extension is figured on then everything else is thrown off. Not sure why he chose last years salary rather than his final year salary. It's also obvious looking at the max at 114mil that McCollum did not get the maximum raise of 8% allowed per year or he didn't receive the max new salary allowed (120%) which everything is based from.
