    News of Joseph trade
    hits stunned Revolution players hard

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The news of Shalrie Joseph's departure almost seemed too significant and too surprising for his teammates to process on Wednesday morning.

Joseph no longer a Rev? On his way to Chivas USA in a trade?

Even in the volatile world of MLS, the move represents a dramatic shift for a club that has leaned on Joseph for the past decade to lead the team on the field and in the locker room.

“It still hasn't quite sunk in,” Revolution goalkeeper and longtime teammate Matt Reis told MLSsoccer.com. “It's been an interesting morning. There have been some seismic events, even though we don't get too many earthquakes around here.”

Losing the imposing and pervasive presence of their captain certainly qualifies as a dramatic shock. Joseph, 34, wielded plenty of influence within the squad and his absence will create a significant void to fill in several different areas.

Joseph eager to start fresh at Chivas after impasse in NE
    [IMG]

CARSON, Calif. – When Shalrie Joseph was dealt from New England to Chivas USA a week ago, his immediate reaction was sadness.

Not too long after, though, his mindset changed.

“Once the initial shock wore off, it was, ‘What’s next for me?’” Joseph told reporters on Monday. “That’s how I live my life. What’s next? What can I do in the next moment? How can I make myself better?”

Having had the chance to talk to his new teammates and coaches, though, Joseph’s familiar smile is back. After spending his entire career with the Revolution, Joseph suddenly finds himself in the midst of a Western Conference playoff chase. While it was difficult to depart the Northeast, the door that opened out west is one he now looks at with eagerness.

“For me to come down here in a nice place, a nice environment ... it put a big smile on my face,” Joseph said. “I’m moving into a team that’s in the hunt for the playoffs, a great environment, great locker room, great players around me. That’s what the big smile’s about.”

Joseph trained with the Rojiblancos for the first time on Monday after only having gotten into Southern California late Sunday. He was immediately greeted with a taste of what life figures to be like for him now – a relaxed atmosphere and loads of sunshine.

    Joseph to add excitement
The midfielder could make his debut with the Goats this Sunday

CARSON, Calif. – When Chivas USA dealt for Shalrie Joseph, they not only added quality and experience to the club but also did something else.

    They added excitement.

Joseph's arrival has sent a jolt through his new teammates, who said they look forward to lining up alongside the longtime MLS superstar.

"For me he's been probably the best central midfielder that we've had in this league for a number of years," Chivas striker Juan Pablo Ángel said. "To have a player of his caliber here I think is going to be great. I hope we can help him settle in as soon as possible so he can have his full potential on the field but I am extremely, extremely excited to have him here."

Joseph vows better from Chivas after uninspiring debut
    [IMG]
The new Goat made his debut in the Red-and-White's SuperClasico loss

CARSON, Calif. – After a full week of training and anticipation, Shalrie Joseph finally debuted with Chivas USA.

His debut, though, fizzled out. Joseph had little impact his first time out with his new club as the veteran midfielder – like the rest of his teammates – spend 90 minutes chasing shadows in a 4-0 drubbing courtesy of the LA Galaxy.

“It’s not good enough, bottom line, what I did tonight,” Joseph said after Sunday's match. “We just have to be better next week. I have to work my tail off in practice this week and make sure everybody’s on the same page for Colorado.”

    Recap:
Angel makes Rapids pay as Chivas get late 1-1 tie

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. – Juan Pablo Ángel’s 83rd-minute equalizer gave visiting Chivas USA a last-gasp draw and perhaps a lifeline in the Western Conference table in a 1-1 tie with the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

Rapids goalkeeper Matt Pickens failed to collect Tristan Bowen’s cross in the late going, and the veteran Ángel – a second-half substitute – pounced on the open rebound for his team-high fourth goal of the season in a game dominated by the home side.

    Watch:
Commissioner Garber on new LA downtown stadium

As we wait for more details from Chivas USA's new sole owners, Chivas Guadalajara's Jorge Vergara and Angelica Fuentes, here's something for Goats fans to get excited about.

In a video interview with Sports Business Journal, MLS Commissioner Don Garber makes mention of an "opportunity to build a stadium for them in downtown Los Angeles."

Garber says that Chivas USA is "a team we want to see rise up and create more excitement in the local market."

In addition to that news, there are plenty of nuggets for MLS fans to chew on, including expansion, a rivalry in New York, ownership in Columbus and the regular season Cascadia derby between Seattle and Portland that is "arguably the biggest and perhaps the most important event that we've had."

    That Was Unexpected
Chivas score twice in final five minutes to stun FCD for draw

FRISCO, Texas — Laurent Courtois and Juan Agudelo both scored in the final four minutes of the match as Chivas USA rallied for an improbable 2-2 draw with FC Dallas on Sunday night.

The hosts looked to be cruising to their seventh home win of the season after second-half goals from Jackson and Fabián Castillo, but Chivas scored in the 90th and 94th minute to earn the Goats an improbable point in both teams' season finale at a chilly FC Dallas Stadium.

    Vergara takes full control
    [IMG]
The Chivas USA owner spoke about changes in the club and getting the team to MLS Cup final

“We want to tell our fans that we’re investing money in the club and retaking the control of Chivas with the goal that they will be part of the local community, and that we give Chivas back to the fans. We want the club to become what we all want it to be, a successful team, and I’m sure fans are going to give it their all to support us,” finalized Vergara.

New Chivas USA sporting director promises winning, pride
    [IMG]

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – New Chivas de Guadalajara and Chivas USA sporting director Dennis te Kloese is promising a bright future for fans of both clubs, but is keeping his cards close to his chest on how it will be achieved.

“The objective is that Chivas and Chivas USA should be winning teams and more than anything sources of pride for the fans,” announced Te Kloese in a press conference here on Wednesday.

Explanations of how te Kloese, whose hiring was announced on Christmas Eve, will split his time between the two institutions and what will be the process of improving Chivas USA from their dismal performance over the last three MLS seasons were not touched upon, with the Dutchman set to carry out an in-depth analysis of the structure of both clubs first.

    Chivas continue rebuild,
send LaBrocca to COL for Avila

Chivas USA continued their offseason makeover on Tuesday, announcing that they have acquired the rights to attacker Eric Avila from the Colorado Rapids in exchange for midfielder Nick LaBrocca.

The Rapids had acquired the rights to the San Diego-born Avila, who has Mexican heritage, from Toronto FC in the 2012 Re-Entry Draft but did not reach an agreement with the 25-year-old.

Avila started his career at FC Dallas, scoring three goals in 63 appearances in his first three-and-a-half seasons in the league. He was then traded to Toronto FC in mid-2011, where he made 33 appearances. He enjoyed the best season of his career in 2012, recording a goal and two assists while playing a career high 24 games.

Chivas USA roster shakeup continues: Townsend off to DC
    [IMG]

“We were quite surprised that Casey was available for a trade and we pounced on it,” said D.C. United general manager Dave Kasper in club statement. “He is an exciting striker who brings a ton of energy to the attack, and we think he will be a great fit with our side. He is very happy to return to the D.C. Metropolitan area and we are equally excited to bring him back.”

Townsend becomes the sixth player to leave the club after José Luis Sánchez Solá (a.k.a. "El Chelís") took over as manager. Legendary forward Juan Pablo Ángel and midfield veteran Peter Vagenas were not brought back after their contracts expired. The club also declined the contract options of long-time MLS players Danny Califf and Alejandro Moreno. Attacking midfielder Nick LaBrocca and now Townsend have been traded.

WE WILL PUT UP A FIGHT!

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Chivas Guadalajara and Chivas USA sporting director Dennis te Kloese didn’t look comfortable in the press conference here last month to announce his new position.

Journalists asking quick-fire questions in search of the next day’s headline just didn’t seem to suit his style.

But chat at length with the Dutchman and you realize quickly that he plans long term, talks with substance not sound-bytes, has a deep understanding of soccer both sides of the border and possesses a steely drive as he confronts the biggest job in his career to date.

Chivas USA look set to reap the benefits of their closer relationship with their Mexican counterparts, as the club announced Friday that it has acquired three players on loan from CD Guadalajara.

    Chivas USA add veteran defenders
    Walter Vilchez and Joaquin Velasquez

Velázquez, 37, comes to Chivas USA having once played for new head coach José Luis Sánchez Solá in Mexico’s First Division. As a part of Puebla, Sánchez Solá and Velázquez formed part of the team that helped take Los Camoteros to the top flight in 2007. The Veracruz-born defender made his pro debut in 1995 with Puebla and also had stints with Santos Laguna, Lobos BUAP and Veracruz.

Vílchez, 31, has earned 64 caps for Peru’s national team, recording one goal for his country. An experienced player in Peru’s top flight, Vílchez is a five-time champion – three times with Alianza Lima and twice with his most recent club Sporting Cristal. The left back also spent time in Mexico, first with Cruz Azul and then Puebla under Sánchez Solá. Vílchez made his professional debut in 2000 with Deportivo Wanka.
