Chivas USA to face Chivas Guadalajara in friendly match
    in Ciudad Juarez

Chivas USA will square off against sister club Chivas Guadalajara in a friendly match on Wednesday, March 20, to be held in the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juárez.

This will represent the first time the two sides have clashed since Guadalajara owner Jorge Vergara took full control of Chivas USA at the end of the 2012 season. Since then, Chivas USA have re-established a strong connection with their sister club and loaned in a number of players from the Mexican powerhouse.

    MLS Match Recap:
LA Galaxy 1, Chivas USA 1

CARSON, Calif. – Carlos Álvarez finished a late ball through the box in his Major League Soccer debut and Chivas USA overcame a controversial first-half red card to claim a 1-1 draw with the LA Galaxy in the first SuperClasico showdown of the season.

Jack McBean had given LA the lead in the 83rd minute, but Álvarez tapped home Carlos Borja's low cross through the box in the 89th to give Chivas a share of the points.

The Goats had gamely weathered center back Joaquín Velázquez's 40th-minute ejection and held off the dominant Galaxy's second-half forays until McBean got his head to a deflected ball from Mike Magee. Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy got his hand to the ball but couldn't keep it out of his net.

Kennedy and his backline had been strong in thwarting LA's attack, even more so after Velázquez was shown straight late in the first half, though the exactly ultimately failed to make the man advantage pay.

Giovani Casillas, Jose Correa and Julio Morales each score for Chivas USA

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Chihuahua, Mexico (Wednesday, March 20, 2013) – Chivas USA and sister club Chivas Guadalajara played to a 3-3 draw Wednesday evening at Ciudad Juarez’s Estadio Olimpico in a match that featured two penalty kicks and two lead changes.

Guadalajara went up by two scores within the friendly’s first 21 minutes on goals by Jesus Sanchez and Luis Morales. The Rebaño Angelino stormed back with three scores to take the lead in the second half on scores from Giovani Casillas, Jose Correa and Julio Morales. In the 86th minute, Guadalajara’s Erik Torres equalized the match for good by knocking in the match’s second penalty kick.

A portion of the proceeds from the match will go toward EDUCARE, an education institute in Ciudad Juarez that builds hope for one of that city’s most marginalized and violence-stricken communities.

    Chivas 4, Chicago 1
Edgar Mejia, Joaquin Velazquez, Juan Agudelo and an own goal lead Chivas USA to victory

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. – This time, there was no comeback needed for Chivas USA in a 4-1 win over Chicago on Sunday.

The Goats scored opened the scoring for the first time this season when Edgar Mejia's 57th minute rocket found the back of the net, then Joaquin Velazquez scored the game winner a week after a phantom red card threatened to keep him out of Sunday's contest. A Juan Agudelo curler and an own goal from Chicago’s Jalil Anibaba finished the day off.

The Fire knew they'd have chances against Chivas USA’s bend-but-don’t-break defense, and the opportunities came in bunches during the first half.

Chivas USA Defeats Vancouver, 2-1, to Extend Unbeaten Streak to Four

Chivas USA (3-1-1) extended its unbeaten streak to four games with a 2-1 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps FC (2-2-0) at The Home Depot Center Saturday night. The Rojiblancos were led by goals in each half - the first, a Vancouver own goal off a strike and the second on midfielder Eric Avila's first goal of the season. Vancouver's lone goal came on a Kenny Miller header in the second half. With the win, the Red-and-White are now in sole possession of second place with ten points in the Western Conference and continue to lead MLS in goals scored with ten.

    - The Rojiblancos took their earliest lead of the season in the off a strike from midfielder Carlos Alvarez in the 12th minute from the left wing near the top of the 18-yard box. The rookie's shot deflected off a Vancouver defender near the short area and went past goalkeeper Joe Cannon's right for the 1-0 advantage.

    - The Red-and-White nearly went up a second goal in the 21st minute when Juan Agudelo received a pass inside the box, and with a defender battling the forward for ball possession, laid the ball off to the right side of the box to a cutting Avila, whose strike sailed wide right into the side netting. A minute later, left back Bobby Burling had a dangerous look at goal on the end of a corner kick. Burling got a header on the entry and sent it toward the left post, but Cannon got a hand on the attempt.

    - Chivas USA continued to knock on the door throughout the first half and looked to extend its lead. In the 24th minute, midfielder Edgar "Chore" Mejia unleashed a strike from about 30 yards out that bounced just wide left of the post. In the 40th minute, midfielder Jorge Villafaña - making his first start of the season - won a fifty-fifty challenge and served an outlet pass to Tristan Bowen down the left seam. The forward pushed the ball up field and sent a low cross to a cutting Jose Correa near the short area. But Correa's sliding attempt could not connect with the cross, and the pass went through untouched.

    - Chivas USA took a 2-0 lead in the 50th minute on Avila's tremendous strike from about 15 yards out. Villafaña sent a high cross from outside the left side of the box toward Avila, who was left unmarked inside the right side of the box. As the volley approached, the midfielder squared up and sent his right-footed strike before the pass even touched the ground and beat Cannon to his right and inside the left post. The assist was Villafaña's second of the season and second in as many games.

    - Vancouver cut the lead to 2-1 in the 64th minute on the rebound of a Dan Kennedy save. The Red-and-White goalkeeper made a diving stop to his right on Erik Hurtado's strike. Miller headed-in the loose ball from inside the box for his second goal of the season.

    - With regulation time ticking away, Kennedy came up with a huge stop in the 89th minute. The Red-and-White captain came far off his line to meet Kekuta Manneh, who was on a solo breakaway with right back Mario de Luna closing in from behind. Kennedy met Manneh near the arc and broke up the threat, preserving the 2-1 victory for the home side.

Chivas USA has the following weekend off from MLS competition and will return to league play on April 13 when it hosts Western Conference rival the Colorado Rapids at The Home Depot Center starting at 7:30 p.m. (PT). Chivas USA Routs Cal FC, 5-1, in Scrimmage

Led by a Tristan Bowen hat-trick performance Friday morning, Chivas USA defeated Cal FC, 5-1, in its second of two scrimmages this week. The Rojiblancos were also propelled to the dominant win at The Home Depot Center-s Field 4 on goals by Miller Bolaños and Giovani Casillas. Cal FC's lone goal came in the final minutes of regulation on a John Caceraes score.

    - The Red-and-White got out to an early lead, as Bolaños and Laurent Courtois worked a combination play on the left wing that resulted in Bolaños beating Cal FC goalkeeper Isiah Castro to his left to take a 1-0 advantage in the seventh minute. The Goats nearly doubled their score in the 12th minute when right back Emilio Orozco sent a pass over the top down the right sideline to forward Julio Morales, who crossed the ball to Bolaños inside the box. Starting the match at forward, Bolaños got off a clean shot but was denied by Castro.

    - Chivas USA Head Coach Jose Luis Sanchez Sola "Chelis" made 10 substitutions to start the second half, most of who are regular starters. Of the 11 that started the match, goalkeeper Dan Kennedy, center back Joaquin Velazquez and midfielder Marvin Iraheta were the only players with four appearances or more in the regular season.

    - In the 63rd minute, Bowen knocked in his first of three goals when he cashed in a penalty kick awarded to the Goats a minute earlier when midfielder Jorge Villafaña was taken down on the left side of the box with a tackle. Bowen lined up and sent a low shot passed substitute goalkeeper Adrian Topete-s right side to put Chivas USA up 2-0.

    - A minute later, Bowen put his side up by three when he led a fast break on the right seam unassisted. As the forward neared the box, Topete came off his line to meet the attack, leaving the net exposed and allowing Bowen to send a chip shot over the keeper for the score.

    - In the 75th minute, Casillas worked the ball toward the arc and laid the ball off to Carlos Alvarez inside box. Alvarez, with his back to the goal, turned to his left toward the right post and slotted a pass to the cutting Casillas, who beat Topete with a short tap in to take a commanding 4-0 lead.

    - Chivas USA found its fourth second-half goal and went up 5-0 in the 78th minute on Bowen's third goal. Midfielder Eric Avila received the ball on the right wing and made a solo play into the right side of the box and sent a pass to Bowen, who made his cut near the short area for the tap-in score to put the exclamation point on his side's goal performance for the day. Caceraes put his side on the board in the 88th minute with an assist from Osiris Saligan on a set piece for the 5-1 result.

Chivas USA currently sits in second place in the Western Conference and has the weekend off from MLS competition. The Rojiblancos return to league play on April 13 and look to extend their unbeaten streak to five when they host conference rival the Colorado Rapids at The Home Depot Center starting at 7:30 p.m. (PT). Chivas USA Falls at Home, 1-0, to Colorado

Chivas USA (3-2-1) fell, 1-0, Saturday night at The Home Depot Center to Western Conference rival the Colorado Rapids (2-3-2). The match's lone goal came in the first half on a Deshorn Brown penalty kick. With the loss the Rojiblancos remain in second place with 10 points and a game in hand of first place FC Dallas.

    - Colorado took the early lead in the seventh minute when Brown cashed in his second goal of the season after being awarded a penalty a minute earlier. As Brown pushed the ball inside the 18-yard box, the referee called a penalty on what he appeared to see as too much contact on the challenge.

    - Chivas USA had a golden opportunity to equalize the match in the 36th minute when it was awarded a penalty kick of its own when forward Jose Correa was bumped by a Colorado player while going up for a ball near the short area. The Red-and-White, however, were unable to convert the penalty as Correa's shot was sent off the crossbar.

    - The Rojiblancos continued to get into dangerous spots in their attacking third. As the first half entered stoppage time, midfielder Eric Avila sent a cross from the right side into the box. Midfielder Jorge Villafaña headed the ball toward goal but the attempt was not on target. Forward Tristan Bowen gathered the loose ball on the right side of the short area near the end line and crossed it back to Laurent Courtois, who one-timed his shot over the crossbar.

    - In the 58th minute, Avila again sent a cross from the right side near the short area. The initial entry pass was batted away in the air to an unmarked Courtois inside the box. The midfielder - who came on as a sub in the 31st minute - brought the deflected ball down off his chest and one-timed his strike, but the shot sailed over the crossbar.

    - The Rojiblancos continued to knock on the door. In the 73rd minute, Courtois served a pass from the left side to midfielder Carlos Alvarez who was left with space momentarily on top of the 18-yard line. Alvarez's right-footed curling shot, however, traveled over the crossbar.

    - In the 83rd minute, midfielder Edgar "Chore" Mejia sent a free kick from about 35 yards out on the left seam and toward the far post. The entry was headed back toward the center of the box but the threat was turned away by Colorado goalkeeper Clinton Irwin. The Goats continued to push their numbers forward but were unable to get on the board, as stoppage time ran out and the 1-0 result stood.

Chivas USA continues its Western Conference play when it travels to face Real Salt Lake on Saturday, April 20, at Rio Tinto Stadium for a 6 p.m. (PT) kickoff. The match is the first of three meetings between the clubs and can be heard in Spanish on W Radio 690 AM. For more information please visit cdchivasusa.com . Chivas USA Falls at RSL 1-0

hivas USA (3-3-1) fell, 1-0, Saturday night at Real Salt Lake (3-3-2) before a crowd of 14,900 at Rio Tinto Stadium. The host side was led by Javier Morales' first goal of the season in the second half. With the loss, the Rojiblancos currently sit in third place in the Western Conference standings with 10 points.

    - Both sides started the match looking to press the action by getting into dangerous spots. Rookie Carlos Alvarez pushed the ball down the middle of the field in the sixth minute and created space near the arc to get off a clean strike, but was denied by RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando.

    - The Rojiblancos got into their attacking third and took six corner kicks in the first half as a result, one of which generated a golden opportunity for the Goats to take the initial lead in the match. In the 35th minute, Edgar "Chore" Mejia's entry from the left corner was handled by a RSL player near the short area. But Mejia was unable to convert on the penalty as Rimando deflected the shot with a dive to his left.

    - Chivas USA continued to get into dangerous spots inside the host's defense and create opportunities. As first-half stoppage time ticked away, Alvarez nearly put the Red-and-White up a goal on his left-footed strike near the left corner of the short area. Forward Julio Morales dropped off his pass near the arc to Alvarez who was making his run inside the left side of the box, but Alvarez's shot was wide right of the far post, and the sides went into the half locked in a scoreless tie.

    - RSL went up 1-0 in the 53rd minute off Morales' header just outside the short area that found the inside of the left post. Alvaro Saborio received a slotted ball inside the right side of the box and crossed it to Morales, who was positioned inside the box and knocked in the eventual game-winner.

    - The Goats continued to push their numbers forward throughout the second half in search of the equalizer to come away with their second road result of the season. As the match entered stoppage time, Chivas USA continued to send crosses into the area, but could not find the back of the net, and the 1-0 result stood.

Chivas USA returns home to continue its Western Conference play when it faces Northern California rival the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday, April 27, at the Home Depot Center for a 7:30 p.m. (PT) kickoff. Chivas USA ties San Jose, 2-2, at home

Led by Mario de Luna and Tristan Bowen's first goals with the Rojiblancos, Chivas USA (3-3-2) played the San Jose Earthquakes (2-3-4) to a 2-2 draw Saturday night at The Home Depot Center. The Quakes took the initial lead on Chris Wondolowski's first-half score but gave up the lead early in the second half on De Luna and Bowen's back-to-back scores. San Jose evened the marker on Cordell Cato's goal. With the tie the Rojiblancos are tied for the fourth-most points in the Western Conference with 11.

Both sides came out from the opening whistle looking to get their numbers forward. Chivas USA rookie Carlos Alvarez found space early in the match and pushed the ball inside the arc but could not get off a shot as the Quakes' defense closed in on the midfielder. Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy continued to add to his save total (32) as he made a diving save to his left in the 12th minute on a shot that was on frame.

San Jose went ahead in 40th minute on Wondolowski's fourth goal of the season off a free kick served in by Shea Salinas from about 25 yards out near the left sideline. Salina's entry pass found Wondolowski on the right side of the box, where the forward's right-footed shot was able to beat Kennedy inside the left post.

The Rojiblancos answered back with two goals in a span of four minutes to take a 2-1 lead beginning in the 47th minute on De Luna's goal. Midfielder Jorge Villafaña sent a low cross from outside the left side of the box and into the short area where De Luna was cutting toward the near post. Villafaña's pass was initially tipped by San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch, but the Red-and-White right back was able to put the loose ball away for the score.

Villafaña again pushed the ball down the left sideline and got off a second low cross from nearly the same spot. The pass momentarily traveled through the box but eventually found an unmarked Bowen on the right side of the box for a left-footed strike that beat Busch to his right.

The Red-and-White defense held the lead for 25 minutes off key saves from Kennedy and a diving save by left back Joaquin Velazquez in the 72nd minute on a cross from the left side of the box that Wondolowski nearly tapped in behind Kennedy. But Velazquez was slid in front of the goal line to deny the threat.

San Jose found the equalizer it was looking for in the 76th minute on Cato's first goal of the season. The midfielder entered the match in the 67th and was able to get on the end of Salina's second assist of the match. Salina's crossed his pass from outside the left side of the box to Cato as he made his cut toward the short area. Nana Attakora was credited with his first assist of the season on the sequence. Chivas USA continued to get into dangerous spots in stoppage time but could not take its second lead of the game, as the marker remained locked at 2-2.

Chivas USA Defeats Misioneros in Friendly

As part of the week's training schedule ahead of the match against Sporting Kansas City in MLS' Week 10, Chivas USA hosted a friendly scrimmage against the Los Angeles Misioneros. The Red-and-White came up on top and defeated the PDL club 1-0 at The Home Depot Center's Field 6.

Wednesday's scrimmage, set up to help Coach Jose Luis Sanchez Solá see players he sees fit for Sunday's match against Kansas City, had the same expectations as any match; with the exception of injured players, just about all Red-and-White players took part of the friendly.

After a warm-up session to prepare for the scrimmage, the match kicked off and consisted of two, 35-minute halves. The Red-and-White coach used two different line-ups in each half in an effort to see the performance of each member of the squad.

Facing the Southern California lower-tier team, Chivas USA did not struggle in dominating the Los Angeles Misioneros, taking control of the ball and generating the most, and the best chances at goal, same chances that they hope they can develop in Sunday match at Sporting Park.

Coach Chelis Sanchez Solá stood by in the sidelines and continually gave his players instructions and inclusively added precise movements to help optimize the team's performance that will help lead them to their fourth victory of the 2013 MLS season.

After 70 minutes, the final whistle indicated that the match had concluded, but training had not finalized for Chivas USA; the two squads that took part of the scrimmage closed training with a light jog around the field and a series of stretching exercises on the sidelines.

Chivas USA will return to training for its third session this week this Thursday at 9:30 am at The Home Depot Center ahead of their match against Sporting Kansas City scheduled for this Sunday, May 5 at 2 pm PT at Sporting Park.

De Luna, part of MLS' Team of the Week

Chivas USA's back line continues to receive an ovation league wide. A few weeks ago, Bobby Burling's performance against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC put him in MLSsoccer.com's Team of the Week, and this week, Mario de Luna has been named to the elite group.

Just last week, Coach Jose Luis Sanchez Solá pulled the Red-and-White defender from the match against Real Salt Lake just minutes before the end of the first half, move made many wonder if de Luna was injured or the coach was simply not satisfied with his on-field performance.

The Mexican defender returned to Saturday's match against the San Jose Earthquakes to redeem himself and prove why, before the match against RSL, he had played every minute of the 2013 MLS season. Not only did De Luna go all 90 minutes on the pitch, but also scored his first MLS goal for Chivas USA, but also made two crucial saves that kept the Goats in the game.

Once he found out about his nomination, the Aguascalientes, Mexico native said that he was very happy for the distinguished honor, but also expressed his committed to continue improving his playing level so he can be considered week-to-week on MLSsoccer.com's Team of the Week.

"Me siento contento por esto", comenzÃ" De Luna después de conocer su nominaciÃ"n, "ahÃ- se ve el trabajo de lo que se hace semana a semana y para que en el partido estés en el equipo titular. También el hacer bien las cosas en el partido, estar bien concentrado y cuenta también mucho el apoyo de los compañeros, ya que uno solo no podrÃ-a ser nada.

"I feel very happy about it," De Luna said after learning about his nomination. "That's where you see all the work that we've been carrying out week to week just to get to the starting line-up. We also have to work hard on the field, be fully concentrated and also appreciate the support from my teammates, that without them, I couldn't do my job."

"Now, I have to match and improve my performance level. We have a game this weekend where we're determined to earn three points and continue the level that we carried out in the match against San Jose," the Chivas USA defender concluded.

    Julio Morales, back home

After being out one week with the Mexican U20 National Team training camp, Julio Morales is back with Chivas USA. The 19 year-old forward returned to The Home Depot Center's Field 6 this week, just in time to get back on track with his teammates in a practice scrimmage against PDL-side LA Misioneros FC.

"I felt good physically and mentally being back here with my team. I'm ready to work hard and focus on my team and the league because even though we're doing well so far, we have to continue moving up," Morales said after the scrimmage with the Misioneros.

Morales joined the Mexican youth squad on April 22nd for a week-long training camp just two days after going all 90 minutes in the Red-and-White's match at Real Salt Lake. The camp was held in Indiana as a preparation for the 2013 FIFA U20 World Cup, set to take place from June 21st- July 23 in Turkey.

"It [the camp] was interesting, to say the least; there was a lot of competition. But overall, it was good experience and I felt very good. Thankfully I was taken into consideration this time, and personally, I thought I did well and now we wait to see if I get called up again.

While with the U20's, Morales played in the two games against the University of Notre Dame and the University of Indiana. Though the San Jose native didn't score in any of the games, Morales went all 90 minutes against the Fighting Irish.

"I think I have the skills and the capacities to be on the squad that goes to the World Cup. I went to this camp, gave it my all, and hopefully the coach [Sergio Almaguer] takes me into consideration. By the end, the coach told me that I did things very well and to continue working hard and we'll see where we go from there," he finalized.

'Chore' Mejia ready for his return

The match suspension that midfielder Edgar "Chore" Mejia received after a red card in the match against Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium in Week 8 has been served after his absence in last Saturday's match against San Jose at The Home Depot Center.

Consequently, ahead of the Week 10 match against Sporting Kansas City, Chivas USA's number eight has become eligible to return to action; after watching his team from the stands for the first time, Edgar Mejia assured that he can't live through that again.

"It's not good being out of action, and much less due to a suspension. I'm sure that it won't happen again, and though its how soccer is, today I'm very happy to be eligible and have the opportunity to join the team against Kansas City this weekend.

"Even though this was the first time that this has happened to me, a suspension in this league or any other, looks bad on the player, but now that it has happened to me, it's a lesson that I've learned and it won't happen again," he indicated.

Before his suspension in the match against Real Salt Lake, Edgar Mejia had been one of the regulars in Chivas USA's line-up, playing in seven of the nine games in the 2013 MLS season, all of which were starts, and disputed practically every minute of them.

Yet, not just because he has been a regular in the Red-and-White line-up and is now eligible for an official match, means that it'll guarantee him a starting spot. The midfielder himself stated that he has to work as much as he can to be considered by the Red-and-White coach.

"Just because I'm eligible, it doesn't guarantee that I'm going to play, it simply means that I'll be at the coach's disposition, and if I get a chance, I'll happily give it my best, with the responsibility that the team needs to continue adding points in the standings," the Mexican midfielder said.

Chivas USA Fall 3-0 at Portland

Chivas USA fell 3-0 to the Portland Timbers on Sunday afternoon at JELD-WEN Field with goals by Rodney Wallace, Diego Valeri and Will Johnson. With the loss, the Rojiblancos (3-5-2) could not add to their 11-point total in the Western Conference standings.

Led by Chivas USA goalkeeper Patrick McLain who had his first career start in Major League Soccer, the Rojiblancos' defense denied Portland's attack on a number of dangerous looks at goal. The young goalkeeper made his first big stop in the 10th minute when a header attempt forced him to make a last-second save across his body after a cross was sent in from the left side.

McLain came up big again in the 25th minute at point-blank range. Portland's Jack Jewsbury sent a cross from the right side of the box to a cutting Ryan Johnson who headed the ball from inside the short area. The Red-and-White keeper was stout and denied the threat.

The Rojiblancos generated several chances at goal in the first half, as Giovani Casillas sent a ball into the mixer from the right sideline off a free kick in the 22nd minute. But Mario de Luna's header was not on frame and sailed out of bounds.

Portland went ahead in the 34th minute on Wallace's chip shot over McLain from inside the box. After Chivas USA could not convert on a corner kick, Portland 'keeper Donovan Ricketts served a quick outlet pass to start the fast break for the home side. Midfielder Ryan Johnson worked the ball into the attacking third and chipped his assist over the top of the Red-and-White defense to a finishing Wallace.

Playing a goal down in the second half, Chivas USA continued to push their attack forward in search of the equalizer. In the 68th minute, midfielder Eric Avila and forward Jose Correa - who came on as a sub to start the second half - tried to work a give-and-go near the goal but could not complete the exchange cleanly and the threat was cleared out by Portland's defense.

Two minutes later the Timbers extended their lead to 2-0 when Valeri tapped in his shot past McLain just outside the short area off a Wallace assist.

Chivas USA midfielder Martin Ponce made his MLS debut when he was subbed on in the 59th minute and nearly knocked in his first goal in the 78th minute. Ponce received a threaded pass from Avila near the right sideline in the attacking third and worked the ball from the right side of the box toward the short area and got off a shot that was on frame inside the near post, but Ricketts was there to get a hand on the shot.

As the match entered stoppage time, the Timbers put the exclamation point on the victory on Will Johnson's right-footed strike just outside the box. The shot found the inside of the right post past a diving McLain to his left for the final 3-0 marker.

Chivas USA now return home to continue their Western Conference play when they host Real Salt Lake on Sunday, May 19, at The Home Depot Center beginning at 7:30 p.m. (PT).

Chivas Academy Remains Unbeaten with Jorge Vergara as Witness

Strengthened by Jorge Vergara's support and visit to The Home Depot Center, Chivas USA's Youth clubs ended today their U.S. Soccer's Development Academy regular season on a high note as both U15/16's and U17/18 teams earned huge wins against the LA Galaxy.

Romario Lomeli and Caleb Calvert led Chivas USA's U18 team to a 2-1 victory over the Galaxy in the last regular season game. Lomeli gave the Red-and-White the lead in the 20th minute after shooting a ball past LA goalkeeper off a pass by Brian Kennedy. The Galaxy fought hard throughout the rest of the half looking to equalize, but a solid performance by Chivas defense and 'keeper Jake McGuire kept the ball from entering the Chivas goal.

Early into the second half, Calvert notched his 22nd goal of the season, and the second of the match for the Goats in the 57th minute. Although Chivas dominated the second half, the Galaxy was able to score their only goal in the 80th minute via penalty kick. With the win, the Red-and-White has qualified to the USSDA playoffs that will kick-off on June 24 at FC Dallas Park.

Also earning a huge win, and extending their unbeaten streak was Chivas USA's U15/16 team as they defeated the LA Galaxy 4-2, also at The Home Depot Center. The Southwest Division Champions went down 1-0 in the 8th minute of the match after a Galaxy goal, but fought tirelessly to make a comeback. In the 20th minute, with all their hard work and determination, Mark Hernandez was able to notch the equalizer for the Goats, and five minutes later, Bilal Abdallah put the Red-and-White on top, scoring his first goal with the Academy. Just before the first half ended, Jorge Ruiz scored the third in the game, his 17th goal this season.

Coming back to the second half, the LA Galaxy scored early on in the 42nd minute to put them back in the game. It was Amaya Adonis who was able to seal the score board in the 81st minute for the final 4-2 win. Chivas USA's U15/16 automatically qualify to the USSDA playoffs in Dallas that will kick-off for their category on June 25.

    International Friendly

Chivas USA's new and upcoming U23 squad fell 4-1 in their first international friendly match against Mexico's U20 National Team on Friday night at the University of California at Riverside. The Red-and-White team, composed of former Academy players, fought hard against the Mexican squad who is preparing for the 2013 FIFA U20 World Cup to be held in Turkey. Chivas USA's U23 squad will participate in the So Cal Premier League that will kick-off June 1st and will face some of the top teams in Southern California.

Training Report: Chivas USA focus on attacking

Chivas USA today completed their final practice of the week with an emphasis on offensive tactics ahead of Sunday's conference showdown against Real Salt Lake at 7:30 p.m. (PT) at home.

The session kicked off with a 10 minute light jog around the pitch, followed by a series of stretches under the supervision of Strength and Conditioning Coach Osvaldo Scansetti. The squad completed its warm-ups portion of training by running through cone and hudle drills positioned at short distances. The drills were set-up to work on speed and also incorporated hip rotation exercises.

The Rojiblancos were then divided into separate groups. The primary group, which had assigned the most number of players, continued the morning with a game of "torito" followed by soccer tennis. Meanwhile, the smaller group, under the direction of Head Coach José Luis Sánchez Solá, worked on finishing drills near the goal.

While the field players continued to work through the various drills and stations at practice, Goalkeeper Coach Daniel González worked with the 'keepers individually by firing shots from various angles and distances in front of the goal.

After 45 minutes of game strategies for tomorrow's match, the coaching staff concluded training with a cool-down session that included stretching excersises.

Chivas USA's unique rivalry with RSL

The all-time rivalry between Chivas USA and Real Salt Lake is unique to any other the Red-and-White have established in Major League Soccer. Both Chivas USA and RSL entered the League in 2005 as expansion teams and have met 26 times, including two playoff matches in 2008. In regular-season competition, the sides have played each other nearly even, with a record of 10-10-4 and an equal amount of goals scored apiece at 30.

The Rojiblancos hold an edge in matches played at The Home Depot Center with a record of 7-5-1, and outscoring RSL 20-14, but the team from Utah has taken the last three meetings, including the season's first of three contests on April 20 at Rio Tinto Stadium. RSL took the 1-0 win on Javier Morales' second-half goal, in a match that featured a failed penalty kick conversion and 24 fouls. And it is up to Chivas to try and establish their style of play to come away with the needed result in the rematch at home on Sunday beginning at 7:30 p.m. (PT).

"At this stage in the season, the rematches around the League begin to come into play," said Chivas USA Assistant Coach Isidro Sánchez. "With the better understanding we now have of the League we will try and use it in our favor and return to our style of play, which is to pressure, run and possess the ball.

The first meeting was decided by the minimal difference and played nearly even across the statistical board. Both sides took 14 shots at goal and nearly split ball possession throughout the match. Nevertheless, it was the home side that came away with the clean sheet. And as Sánchez says, the team will try to snap out of its scoring drought from the last five games, while maintaining order on the back line against RSL's scoring threats.

"The way to off-set [RSL's] attackers is to have our defenders stay close to them and be very aware of where they are. The problem appears when you give them a lot of space. Intelligent players will hurt you."

On the other hand, it is RSL that will have to make adjustments of their own against perhaps a semi-new look Chivas USA, as the Red-and-White welcomed two new additions to the squad in the last two weeks. Midfielders MartÃ-n AarÃ"n Ponce and Gabriel Farfán are the newest players in the mix for Chivas USA and eligible for selection in Sunday's match. Ponce already made his debut in last week's game at Portland as a second-half sub, while Farfán arrived to the Rojiblancos from Philadelphia Union on Thursday via trade.

Chivas USA Fall on the Road

Chivas USA (3-7-2) fell 2-0 Saturday night at Dick's Sporting Goods Park to the Colorado Rapids (5-4-4) in their second meeting of the season. With a goal in each half, the home side was led by scores from Atiba Harris and Nathan Strurgis, respectively. With the loss, the Red-and-White could not move from their 11-point total in the Western Conference.

The Rapids went up a goal in the 11th minute on Harris' second score of the season when he got on the end of Chris Klute's cross from outside the left side of the box. Harris made his cut down the middle of the box and placed the ball toward the lower right corner of the net with his sliding shot.

The Rojiblancos pushed their numbers forward in search of the equalizer and nearly found it as a result of one of their four corner kicks taken in the half. Midfielder Carlos Alvarez - who was making his first appearance for the Goats since serving a two-game suspension - served his pass into the box and defender Bobby Burling got a clean header on the entry, but the shot bounced wide left of the post and out of bounds.

In the 69th minute, midfielder Eric Avila made a solo play from his right wing spot and created space for himself and got off a clean strike, but Colorado goalkeeper Clinton Irwin was there for the save.

The Red-and-White continued to get into spaces in their attacking third and in the 76th minute, Alvarez played a through ball to Jose Manuel Rivera - who came on as a sub in the 68th minute for forward Jose Correa - as he made his run and got behind the Colorado defense for a split second inside the box. Rivera's shot, though, sailed wide right and the match remained locked at 1-0.

Two minutes later, the hosts extended their lead to 2-0 when Brown gathered a threaded pass from Brian Mullan and sent a cross from inside the right of the box near the end line to a cutting Strugis for his one-time goal on top of the six-yard line. The Rojiblancos continued to push forward to generate promising looks on both wings but could not capitalize on the opportunities as the marker stood.

Chivas USA return home next Saturday when they host Seattle Sounders FC in the clubs' first of three meetings this season. The match is set to kickoff at 7:30 p.m. (PT) and can be heard in Spanish on W Radio 690.

Chivas USA Fall 2-0 at Home to Seattle Sounders FC

Chivas USA (3-8-2) fell Saturday night, 2-0, to Western Conference rival Seattle Sounders FC (5-4-3) at The Home Depot Center. Seattle was led by Obameni Martins' first-half goal and was aided by a Chivas USA own goal to record the road win. Forward Lamar Neagle recorded an assist on the score.

The Red-and-White possessed well throughout the first half and were able to get a number of quality looks at goal. In the 14th minute, midfielder Jorge Villafaña worked the ball on the left wing and got off a strike, but the attempt sailed wide left. Two minutes later, midfielder Oswaldo Minda threaded a pass to forward Jose Correa as the Colombian striker crossed the 18-yard line. With a defender battling from behind, Correa could not get enough on the shot and Seattle keeper Michael Gspurning was able gather the attempt.

Seattle went up a goal in the 22nd minute when Neagle played a quick pass he received from Mario Martinez to a streaking Martins down the left seam. The Forward worked the ball into the box and chipped his fourth goal of the season over Red-and-White goalkeeper Dan Kennedy.

Playing a goal down, the Rojiblancos continued to get into dangerous spots in their attacking third and took a pair of corner kicks in the first half. In the 26th minute midfielder Carlos Alvarez sent in a corner kick from the right side where center back Joaquin Velazquez's header was on frame but controlled by Gspurning. Three minutes later, Alvarez again was on the distributing end of a Chivas USA set piece, as he played a ball into the box that was headed out of bounds by center back Bobby Burling.

The visitors extended their lead to 2-0 in the 33rd minute when midfielder Mauro Rosales sent a cross into the box from the right side which defender Mario de Luna could not clear out cleanly, as his header attempt found the back of Chivas USA's net for the own goal.

The Red-and-White looked to their bench to provide an offensive spark in the second half, bringing a pair of attacking players into the match in the 61st and 70th minutes with Miller Bolaños and Tristan Bowen, respectively. Both players got into range upon entering the match and got off shots on goal.

Bowen had a pair of quality strikes from the right side of the box for the Goats. In the 74th minute the Los Angeles native got deep into the right side of the box and got off a shot near the end line but was denied. The forward got off his best shot of the night in the 89th minute when his right-footed strike from the right wing was on frame and headed inside the far post, but Gspurning again got a hand on the ball to keep the clean sheet intact for the night.

Chivas USA have the next two weekends off from MLS play, as they turn their attention to facing the Carolina RailHawks in the Fourth Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in Cary, N.C. on June 12 starting at 4:15 p.m. (PT).

City of Los Angeles wants a downtown soccer stadium, team to fill it
    [IMG]

The City of Los Angeles wants to build a soccer stadium, and subsequently wants to land a Major League Soccer franchise to inhabit its new downtown digs. At least, that's the inference being taken from a recent community draft report seeking to elevate the city's collegiate and professional sports profile and bring tourism dollars downtown.

The report states that Los Angeles Convention Center officials will assume a "leadership role in working with the Mayor and City Council to identify a [soccer] team, a potential site and a viable business plan prior to the end of calendar year 2013."

A third MLS team in LA seems extremely unlikely at this point, given that New York just received a second, Orlando City SC continue to make the push to jump from USL PRO to MLS and rumors of David Beckham purchasing a Miami franchise seem to be creeping slowly toward "that's more than a rumor" territory.

Which, of course, leaves one potential downtown target for the City of Los Angeles: Chivas USA, currently sharing the StubHub Center with the Galaxy. They've lived in the Galaxy's considerable shadow for their entire existence, and have long talked of the need for a home of their own.

A move to central LA seems to check every single box for the Goats. New home, new location, but still close enough to keep their current fanbase turning out.

Chivas USA Fall 1-0 to LA Galaxy at home

Chivas USA fell 1-0 Sunday night in the second leg of the SuperClásico against cross-hall rival the LA Galaxy at the StubHub Center. The Galaxy were led to the win on forward Gyasi Zardes' goal in the first half on a Landon Donovan assist. With the win, LA take a one-game advantage in the three-game SuperClásico season series.

The Rojiblancos came out from the opening whistle playing compact and looking to get into the attacking third. The Red-and-White managed to deliver a number of promising looks in and around the Galaxy's box in the first half, as Josué Soto looked to set up his teammates on a pair of entry passes from the left seam. Soto chipped a pass over the top of the defense looking for José Manuel Rivera inside the box, but LA goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini arrived in time to secure the entry. In the 17th minute, Soto combined with Carlos Álvarez on the left side of the box, where the attacking midfielder crossed a low ball toward the near post that was broken up by Cudicini.

Three minutes later, forward Tristan Bowen crossed a pass from the right side of the box that was deflected high. Rivera waited for the ball to come down near the arc and one-timed his right-footed shot on frame that was batted away by Cudicini. In the 32nd minute, Rivera again got into range from behind the arc as he got off a strike, but the attempt deflected off the Galaxy defense and sailed over the cross bar.

Locked in scoreless tie, the Galaxy got on the board first in the 44th minute off a set piece. Donavan played a ball into the mixer from the right seam and Zardes' header near the penalty spot found the inside of the left post for the 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.

Playing a goal down, the Goats looked to equalize, as they brought on midfielder Marco Delgado to start the second half. In the 56th minute, Delgado chipped a short pass over his defender into the box to Rivera as the midfielder made his run into the box, but could not get on the end of the attempt. Three minutes later, Bowen stole a pass and pushed the ball up the left seam and was faced with a one-on-one as he crossed into the box. The Los Angeles native created space for himself and got off a clean strike that crashed outside the side netting. Bowen again took a shot at goal in the 63rd minute from about 20 yards out after he brought down a pass off his chest in the attacking third, but the attempt was high and wide to the right.

Playing as the home side, the Rojiblancos continued to get into dangerous spots looking to even the match. Bowen threaded a pass to sub Jorge Villafaña in the 70th minute, who then worked the ball on the left wing to get off a shot from the left side of the box, but the attempt was wide of the near post. In the 89th minute, midfielder Laurent Courtois had a dangerous look at goal, as he worked the ball to his left along the 18-yard line to get off a curling left-footed attempt that sailed over the crossbar, as the match would remain at 1-0 for the visiting side.

Chivas USA return next week when they host the England Revolution at the StubHub Center on Saturday, June 29, beginning at 7:30 p.m. (PT). The match will be the only meeting this season against the Eastern Conference side and can be heard in Spanish on W Radio 690 AM.
