8-10 more wins than Nurkic? Likely not. Nurkic had 7.8 winshares in 72 games. Call it 8. Jokic only had 11.8. Gobert had 14.4...and Utah has essentially built their team around Gobert's paint presence. It would take a generational C to add 8 wins on top of what Nurkic would add
Possibly the GM or possibly the Owner. Paul Allen had a reported history of meddling, and that includes falling in love with players and overpaying to keep them. Which is well within his rights. He was certainly involved long enough to know what he was doing.
I'll take the toughness, no-nonsense approach of Sloan ANY day. Compare that to the 'nice-guy' approach of Stotts and there is no doubt that attitude trickles down from the top. Sloan would not have allowed/enabled some of the horrible habits certain players on this team and prior versions have exhibited.
It comes down to accountability... and I would say it goes beyond Stotts and up to Neil... when there are no consequences why would they care to change?!
Because they all are just trying to keep their jobs right. I mean we all know Neil hates the fans and probably the players as well right.
Since this is the fifth year since the old era with LA, Rolo, Mathews and others Im sure there has been a plan that has been measured and I would think Jodi would be evaluating objectively how this management has performed against plan.
That is your opinion, which isn't wrong. But we're talking about achievements here. Stotts has had more success than most coaches in Portland. Olshey had a lot to do with that as well. The style of coaching is irrelevant.
Stotts career Playoff coaching winning percentage in Portland is .372. Before last year it was .275. Only Anfernee Simons messing up his plan to lose the final game that ended up causing the Blazers to miss playing the Warriors in the 2nd round got it above .300. That is terrible! His career regular season record is a ho-hum .556. If both of those are better than most Portland coaches, that is a sad state of affairs for the franchise. By comparison, Mike Dunleavy had a .642 Regular season record and was .500 in the Playoffs. Jack Ramsey was a similar .552 in the Regular season but a much better .492 in the Playoffs (NBA title) and obvioulsy lost his best player to almost career ending injury. Even with all the injuries this year, Stotts has never been without Dame for more than a handful of games in a season. Rick Adelman, .654 in the Regular season and .522 in the Playoffs with 2 Finals appearances. Other coaches with a higher wining percentage than Stotts in Portland. Mike Schuler and PJ Carlesimo...and even Maurice Cheeks is only a few percentage points behind. So your right, Stotts is better than most coaches in Portland, but I would submit he is ahead of some that were absolutely terrible so that isn't exactly an endoresment for Stotts. He is ahead of: Kevin Pritchard Caleb Canales Nate McMillan Roland Todd Stu Inman Jack McCloskey Lenny Wilkens (player coach back when that was a thing) Outside of Wilkens who developed into a HoF Coach, the rest of thost that Stotts has a better record than is a list of part timers, GM's filling in and one decent coach in McMillan. .....seems like a pretty low bar. Actually, I thought Stotts would be higher in that rank but in looking back, he is here what he has been nis entire career. Meh to Mediocre. And in the Playoff, he has been abyssmal. I think it would be a struggle to find a coach who has been swept out of the Playoffs as high of a percentage of the time as he has.
you take away Ramsey's first year (I think Ramsey was a good coach, but he was gifted a championship team his first year here) and he had 9 years after that in which one team made it past the first round and had an almost identical playoff record over all.
True...but he is a HoF coach regardless. And 'gifted' might be a bit much. They swept the highly favored Lakers with MVP Jabbar and then beat the favored 76'ers who were a loaded team. Dr J, McGinnis, Dawkins, Doug Collins...that team was stacked. Take away Stotts best year in the Playoffs (last season) and his Playoff winning percentage plummets to an even more abyssmal 27%.
Difference being is that Ramsey's best year was his first year while Stotts was his last full year. I say gifted because he got a healthy Walton and then Maurice Lucas and Dave Twardzik were picked up in the expansion draft. No healthy Walton and no expansion draft it's a whole different story.
And how many times did Mike Schuler, PJ, or Cheeks get the Blazers beyond the 1st round? Did any of them? So far, the only coaches better are Dunleavy, Ramsey, and Rick Adelman. And all of those were either after the expansion draft, when we were gifted a TON of talent, or before the Salary cap which SIGNIFICANTLY reduced our ability to acquire talent via Mr Allen's supreme pocket book. Those coaches (and their GMs) all had advantages Stotts and Olshey do not enjoy.
We have the highest payroll in the ENTIRE LEAGUE. I don't see them being disadvantage that much to be honest.
Actually we don't anymore. Team salary is irrelevant in this case as it might be somewhat of a factor if all our players were healthy and we were still struggling but we know that's not the case.
The remaining salary of the uninjured players was still WAY over the Cap at $126M. That doesn't seem irrelevent given the poor record. Then again, to some, accountability isn't really a thing. No worries, to each their own.
Huh? Our payroll is around 140 mil and the players that have been out much if not all of the season is around 25.5mil. That's a team salary of around 115mil for healthy players. What math are you using? Like I said, payroll is a bad way to judge a team especially when we have some large expirings that will also be coming off the books.
I don't understand why people think a players salary makes them a better player. If player A makes $3,000,000 one season and $12,000,000 the next, do people think he's 4 times better because of the check he takes to the bank? If my employer tripled my salary today, I wouldn't walk into the office 3 times smarter tomorrow.
