Most of the teams ran zone so we had a basic zone offense. It worked pretty well. Got the defenses out of position and created opportunities to attack. We ended up taking a lot of threes though. Which was fine because they were all wide open and I had good shooters. We also had a lot of fastbreaks. I think the main reason we were the best was our defense and rebounding. I taught the offense and then just let it flow. I only yelled about defense and rebounding.
you should bring the trophy out to the restaurant/bar. just flash it around...bitches will be flocking. they love winners.
What did you learn about coaching in general? Did the guys follow your direction when they're only a couple of years younger than you? What were the parents like? My son had a baseball coach about age 18 or 19 when he was about 10 or 12. His baseball team's first coach had them practice at the park, and some guys were playing basketball. They got into some kind of fight and the Coach went to his car trunk to get his gun. He didn't use it, but when Boys & Girls Club heard of this, they fired him, and all they had was this 18-year old. The kid did a good job coaching the baseball team the rest of the way.
I definitely learned it's hard to be patient as a coach. They listened to me most of the time but there were some practices were they just goofed off the whole time. This may be tooting my own horn, but we were the best coached team in the league. Least back talking to the refs, best effort on defense and rebounding. Our offense was simple but crisp and effective. I knew some of the players before this year so I think that helped in them listening to me. They knew I was a lot smarter about basketball than they were. Overall, it was really fun and I look forward to doing it again next year.
Being closer in age, you kept the reins tighter that an older coach. Being new, you are prouder of your accomplishment. Aim for a career! Get a teaching degree, then move up from elementary school to middle school to high school assistant. A high school head coach has competition and must be good. A shortcut is to start as a college assistant, but you'll have to play college ball first. Maybe community college. Maybe this is the start of something big.
