Colorado Rapids sign Panamanian forward Gabriel Torres as Designated Player
    [IMG]

The wait is over. Gabriel Torres is a Colorado Rapid.

After a drawn-out and rumor-laden pursuit, the Rapids officially signed the 24-year-old Panamanian striker on Thursday evening, hours before the closure of MLS’ international transfer window. Torres arrives as the first Designated Player in franchise history.

Torres will be eligible to join the Rapids pending receipt of his P-1 visa. His Designated Player status comes from a combination of his salary and acquisition costs, the team explained, and he will occupy an International spot on Colorado's roster.

Rapids Extend Unbeaten Run to Nine Games with 2-0 Victory

The Colorado Rapids extended their unbeaten run to nine games on Saturday night with a 2-0 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. Goalkeeper Clint Irwin recorded his ninth shutout of the season, while Designated Player Gabriel Torres made his MLS debut, and Vicente Sánchez assisted the game winning goal in his home debut. First-round SuperDraft pick Deshorn Brown scored his seventh goal of the season, leading both the Rapids and MLS Rookies in that category.

The Rapids took the lead in the 35th minute when Sánchez served in a cross from the right flank that found the head of Brown on the far post. The visitors had several chances throughout the match, but Irwin came up big each time to keep Vancouver scoreless. In the 79th minute, Nick LaBrocca found Edson Buddle whose shot deflected off a Whitecaps defender and into the net to give the Rapids a 2-0 victory at home.

The win brought Colorado to nine consecutive games without a loss, tying the club's all-time record which was set April 30-June 11, 2011. After a bye weekend, the Rapids will return to action on Saturday, August 31 when they travel to Eastern Conference leaders Sporting Kansas City, and then to California to take on the LA Galaxy on September 7. Colorado return home on September 14 to face FC Dallas, with tickets available by calling 303-825-GOAL or visiting www.ColoradoRapids.com.

Rapids Unbeaten Streak Comes to a Close in Kansas City

The Colorado Rapids lost for the first time in 10 games, falling 2-1 to Sporting Kansas City on the road on Saturday night. Edson Buddle scored his second goal in as many games to tie the game in the 77th minute, but Graham Zusi scored for the hosts in minute 88 to seal the victory. Benny Feilhaber had given Sporting the lead in the 33rd minute with a great volley from distance. Rapids midfielder Nathan Sturgis made his 100th MLS regular season appearance in the match.

The Rapids visit the LA Galaxy next Saturday, September 7 at 8:30 p.m. MT with the live broadcast on Altitude, with coverage starting at 8:00 p.m. Colorado returns to Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Saturday, September 14 at 7:00 p.m. MT, for the first of three remaining Rapids home games. Buddle Strike Gives Rapids Important Victory at Galaxy

Edson Buddle scored a late goal to lead the Colorado Rapids to an important 1-0 victory at the LA Galaxy on Saturday night. Clint Irwin tied the franchise record with his 10th shutout of the season as the Rapids picked up three points and won the season series against the Galaxy.

Vicente Sánchez picked up his second assist since joining the Rapids in August, stealing the ball from a Galaxy defender before feeding a pass to Buddle at the top of the box. The ex-Galaxy striker took one touch before driving a beautiful shot into the top corner from 20 yards for his 5th goal of the season and the 98th of his MLS career in minute 75.

The Rapids defense withstood late pressure from LA, with goalkeeper Irwin earning his 10th clean sheet of 2013, which ties Colorado's all-time record, set by Joe Cannon in 2004. The result keeps the Rapids in fourth place in the Western Conference, tied with the Portland Timbers and two points ahead of next week's opponent, FC Dallas. The top five teams in the division will make the playoffs.

Colorado returns to Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Saturday, September 14 at 7:00 p.m. MT, for the first of three remaining Rapids home games. A special Burgundy Pack is available, offering tickets to the final home matches and an authentic burgundy home Rapids jersey for just $99. Rapids' comeback in 2-1 win over FC Dallas

Vicente S¡nchez scored his first MLS goal and created a second as the Colorado Rapids came from behind to capture a 2-1 victory over FC Dallas on Saturday night at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. The match was delayed nearly an hour due to lightning, and after Dallas took a lead in the second half, the Rapids scored twice in six minutes to get the win.

Dallas struck first in the 51st minute when Jair Benitez found David Ferreira to slot home from close range, but S¡nchez equalized for the Rapids just eight minutes later. Chris Klute fed a cross into the box and a Dallas defender got a head to it, but it fell to S¡nchez whose left-footed volley from a tight angle found the lower corner of the net.

Just six minutes later, S¡nchez helped the Rapids into the lead. The Uruguayan forward, signed by the Rapids in August, received a pass from Klute and cut past Dallas defender George John to find space. His low cross was knocked into the net by Dallas defender Matt Hedges with Colorado forward Gabriel Torres lurking just behind. As Dallas pushed in the final minutes, Clint Irwin made a diving save in stoppage time from a Benitez free kick to preserve the win.

With the victory, the Rapids move into third place in the Western Conference with 45 points, three points behind rivals Real Salt Lake. The Rapids will visit the Portland Timbers on Friday, September 20 at 8 p.m. MT live on NBC Sports Network, and the team returns home on October 5 to face Seattle Sounders FC and U.S. National Team forward Clint Dempsey. The match kicks off at 8 p.m. MT, and tickets are available by calling 303-825-GOAL or visiting www.ColoradoRapids.com.

Rapids Fall 1-0 at Timbers, Host Sounders on October 5 in Next Match

The Colorado Rapids had possession and opportunities, but the Portland Timbers defense held firm to take a 1-0 victory on Saturday night in Portland. The Timbers' Diego Valeri scored in the 13th minute after a turnover for the match's only goal. The Rapids will return to action on October 5 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park when they host the Seattle Sounders at 8 p.m. MT.

Colorado had a 51-49% advantage in possession, outshot the Timbers 13-9, and had nine corner kicks to Portland's three, but could not find the net to get an equalizer. Central defender Shane O'Neill stood out for the Rapids, who are in fourth in the Western Conference and will watch rivals in action this weekend with an eye on the MLS Cup Playoffs. The top five teams in the division will move on to the postseason.

A special Burgundy Pack is available for the Sounders match, which includes tickets to the final two home matches of 2013 and the first of 2014, plus an authentic burgundy home Rapids jersey for just $99. For more information, visit www.ColoradoRapids.com or call 303-825-GOAL.

Rookies Brown and Powers Lead Rapids to 5-1 Victory over Sounders

The Colorado Rapids scored 13 seconds into the match and never looked back, taking a 4-0 lead by halftime and finishing with a 5-1 rout of the Seattle Sounders in front of a sold out crowd at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Saturday night. Rookie sensation Deshorn Brown scored almost immediately off the kickoff - the second-fastest goal in league history - and again in the 31st minute to give him nine goals on the season, extending his lead among all MLS rookies.

Seconds into the match, Brown won a flick header to Gabriel Torres, who threaded a ball through the Sounders defense back to Brown, and the Jamaican forward slotted the ball into the net for the fastest goal in Rapids history. Nine minutes later, the Rapids doubled their lead when fellow Rookie of the Year candidate Dillon Powers headed home a quickly taken Vicente Sánchez corner kick.

Brown scored his second of the night in the 31st minute when he beat Seattle defender DeAndre Yedlin to a lofted ball from Powers and finished with a left footed strike just inside the 18-yard box. Brown (nine goals, four assists) and Powers (five goals, six assists) are now the top two MLS rookies in both categories.

Just before halftime, Rapids captain Drew Moor made the score 4-0, deflecting in a Hendry Thomas shot from another Sánchez corner kick. Eddie Johnson scored the Sounders' only goal in the 63rd minute, but Rapids Designated Player Gabriel Torres restored the four-goal advantage just before the final whistle, drilling a shot into the side netting in stoppage time for his first goal since joining MLS.

Colorado now sits in fourth place in the Western Conference, and could clinch a playoff spot as early as Wednesday night with a win in San Jose, depending on other results around the league. The match at the Earthquakes will be broadcast live on Altitude and kicks off at 8:30 p.m. MT. The Rapids return home on October 19 for Fan Appreciation Night and Colorado's last home game of the regular season, where they'll battle Vancouver Whitecaps FC at 4 p.m. MT. Tickets to the match, as well as tickets for potential home playoff matches, are available by calling 303-825-GOAL or visiting www.ColoradoRapids.com.

Rapids boost playoff chances by eliminating Vancouver Whitecaps 3-2

He may have done it with a heavy heart, but Rapids forward Gabriel Torres showed why team management made him the franchise's first high-priced "designated player" in August, scoring a gorgeous, game-winning goal Saturday and giving his team a major boost in its quest to make the MLS playoffs.

Having played two games in the previous eight days for the Panamanian national team — one of them a heartbreaking loss to the U.S. that eliminated Panama from World Cup qualifying — Torres fired a swerving rocket from the right wing that beat Vancouver goalkeeper David Ousted to the upper far corner — glancing off the crossbar — in the 77th minute for a 3-2 Rapids victory before 18,103 nervous spectators at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

Oscar Pareja steps down as Colorado Rapids head coach
    [IMG]

Oscar Pareja’s time as head coach in Colorado appears to be over, leaving the Rapids with a significant hole in their organization less than two weeks before the MLS SuperDraft.

Goal.com’s Ives Galarcep reported on Saturday that Pareja has stepped down from his position in Colorado after two seasons at the helm amid reports that FC Dallas are interested in bringing him back to Texas this season. A former player and assistant coach with FCD more for than a decade, Pareja has reportedly long been the club’s top choice to replace outgoing head coach Schellas Hyndman, who stepped down from the position in November.

Current New York Red Bulls assistant coach Robin Fraser is the top candidate to replace Pareja in Colorado, according to the Goal.com report. Former Portland Timbers head coach John Spencer – who suited up for the Rapids from 2001-04 and was a 2010 inductee into the club’s Gallery of Honor – is also a leading candidate, according to the report.

The Rapids did not immediately return a request for comment from MLSsoccer.com on Saturday.

Veteran midfielder Hendry Thomas tweets his farewell to Colorado Rapids
    [IMG]

Hendry Thomas has severed ties with the Colorado Rapids after just two seasons in the Mile High City.

The 27-year-old Honduran midfielder tweeted out his farewell to Rapids fans on his personal Twitter feed on Wednesday, apparently punctuating the end to a short run as Colorado’s hard-charging holding midfielder.

The Rapids declined comment about Thomas’ status on Wednesday.

Rapids Sign Goalkeeper Joe Nasco and Midfielder Jared Watts

The Colorado Rapids announced today that the club has signed goalkeeper Joe Nasco and midfielder Jared Watts. Nasco comes to the Rapids from the Atlanta Silverbacks, where he was named to the NASL Best XI in 2013, while Watts joins Colorado after a standout four-year career at Wake Forest. Per league and team policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.
"We're glad to add depth to our squad with these two signings, and look forward to their contributions to our club," said Rapids Technical Director Paul Bravo. "Joe is a strong goalkeeper who demonstrated that he can play at a high level, and Jared is a technical defensive midfielder who plays the game very intelligently. We're pleased to add both players to our roster."

"I would like to thank the Rapids organization and coaching staff for giving me this great opportunity," said Nasco. "My family and I are very excited to start this new chapter in our lives. I would also like to thank my agent Namjoo Hashemi and Eric Wynalda for believing in me and making this possible. I am looking forward to a very successful season with the team."

"I'm excited to take the next step of my career with the Rapids and am very thankful to the coaching staff and entire organization for the opportunity," said Watts. "I am looking forward to working hard for the club and contributing in any way that I can."

Nasco, 29, starred for the Atlanta Silverbacks last season, being named to the NASL Best XI after a spring season in which he helped the team to a league title, earning four shutouts during the season. A former All-American at Andrew Junior College and an all-conference player at Birmingham-Southern, Nasco was invited to preseason on trial and has appeared in both of Colorado's games, allowing only one goal against in 75 minutes.

A defensive midfielder at Wake Forest University, Watts was selected to the All-ACC First Team for three consecutive seasons and contributed five goals and 10 assists in his four years with the Demon Deacons. He was the captain of the U.S. U-17 squad at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Nigeria in 2009, and has also appeared for the U-20 Youth National Team. Watts also played youth soccer for the North Meck Soccer Club, now the Carolina Rapids - a Rapids adidas Alliance club in North Carolina.

    2014 Colorado Rapids Preview:
Can the kids be all right once again?

Once more, with feeling: For a team with so much youth, they are pretty old at one crucial spot: Center forward. Edson Buddle, who turns 33 in May and just hasn't been the same since the Ingolstadt move a couple years back, is the only legit target forward on the roster. And in the way the 4-2-3-1 has played this preseason, they need the ability to hold the ball up top. If he gets hurt – or just doesn't perform – they could be in trouble and have to redefine themselves on the fly.

Colorado Rapids officially name club icon Pablo Mastroeni as new head coach
    [IMG]

The club announced that franchise icon and interim head coach Pablo Mastroeni is now officially the man in charge in Denver, one week before the Rapids open the 2014 regular season.

Mastroeni, 37, has led the Rapids throughout the preseason since former head coach Oscar Pareja left the club to lead FC Dallas. He has stated throughout the process that he was eager to lead his former club from the sidelines after serving as team captain from 2004-2013.

Rapids Earn 1-1 Draw at New York Red Bulls in 2014 Opener

Pablo Mastroeni opened his coaching career on a positive note after guiding his Colorado Rapids to a 1-1 draw away to the New York Red Bulls in front of 20,542 at Red Bull Arena on Saturday.
It came with a bit of a controversy, after Colorado were awarded a questionable 73rd-minute penalty after center back Jamison Olave was whistled for a foul on Marvin Chavez, but it was nothing more than the battling Rapids deserved on the day.

The converted spot kick from substitute Vicente Sanchez negated an earlier Thierry Henry header goal that originally appeared to set the Red Bulls up for a home-opener victory.

Instead, the result leaves the Red Bulls (0-1-1) still searching for their first win of the season, and gives Mastroeni and the Rapids (0-0-1) something to cheer about ahead of their own home opener next weekend.

The first half saw both teams exchange a number of chances. The Red Bulls opened the match with a flurry of opportunities, but the Rapids' defense held up well and that allowed Colorado to settle into the match and create some scoring chances themselves, including a Nick LaBrocca effort from distance that forced a full-stretch block from goalkeeper Luis Robles.

Henry then put the Red Bulls in front in the 57th minute. Lloyd Sam's cross from the right pulled Rapids right back Shane O'Neill into the middle to cover Tim Cahill, allowing an unmarked Henry to float to the back post. The Frenchman finished the play with a diving header that beat rookie goalkeeper John Berner -- in for injured starting goalkeeper Clint Irwin -- from close range. The goal put Henry in sole possession of second place in the club's scoring history with 42, behind only Juan Pablo Angel (58 goals).

The Rapids, who outshot the Red Bulls 18-11, including 6-2 in shots on goal, stayed in the match, and their Mastroeni-like determination opened the door for their controversial equalizer.

Fifteeen minutes after going down, Colorado mounted an attack down the right side through Sanchez, who subbed on for an Dillon Powers in the 65th minute. Sanchez's little chip found Chavez in the area, where he was knocked down by Olave, who appeared only to be standing his ground as Chavez backed into him. Regardless, referee Alan Kelly adjudged Olave to have fouled Chavez and pointed to the spot. Sanchez buried the penalty.

In the dying moments, both sides had a number of late chances as they looked for a winner, most notably when Peguy Luyindula redirected an Henry freekick across the front of goal, but no one was able to knock the cross home, and the match finished all square.

The Red Bulls return to action on March 23 with a visit to Toyota Park to take on the Chicago Fire. The Rapids, meanwhile, will hold their 2014 home opener vs. the Portland Timbers on March 22.

Rapids Defender Chris Klute out for "A Couple Weeks"

One of the breakout stars of the 2013 season for the Rapids was left back Chris Klute, but the start of 2014 did not go as smoothly for the 24-year-old. Klute was forced to leave the opening match of the MLS season after 52 minutes due to a hamstring injury.
Rapids Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni confirmed on Tuesday that the defender would likely miss some time due to the injury.

"He's going to be, I believe, out for a couple weeks with a hamstring," said Mastroeni after the team's training session. "So it's the next man up, ready to rock, and [we'll] prepare for the next game without him."

The Dallas-area native played 31 games in 2013, starting the final 30 of the season, and led the team with seven assists from his left back spot. One of the top vote-getters among all MLS defenders for end-of-season awards, Klute entered the lineup in the fourth match of the season after an injury to Diego CalderÃ"n and never left.

"Klute's one of those guys who won't come off unless he's absolutely not able to go," said Mastroeni. "I saw him today [Tuesday], and he wasn't out there training with us."

While there is disappointment at going without a player who has been a mainstay for the last year for the time being, Mastroeni has emphasized the cover that the team has in all positions.

"Every guy that's here, whether you're a rookie or an experienced player, is expected to go out there and do the same job, if not better, than the guy that you're replacing," said the Head Coach. "That's the level of expectation I have for everyone here... and that's the trust I have in everyone here to be able to do the job."

Klute was replaced on Saturday by Marc Burch, an experienced player with a lot of MLS minutes in the same position. Burch, who was acquired in the offseason, played well in his 38 minutes, including a crucial tackle late in the game to break up a New York attack.

"It's a great group of guys, it's a great team," said Mastroeni. "Marc Burch exemplifies that, going out on the field and not missing a beat, making a big play down the stretch."

While Klute's injury will keep him out of the lineup, it looks like Dillon Powers is fine after taking an elbow to the head during the game. The collision caused a gash to open up, and the bleeding didn't stop quickly enough for the 2013 Rookie of the Year to continue.

"As far as I know about Dillon Powers, he's feeling good," said Mastroeni. "We'll take it day-to-day, and see if there's any response. We had a session today, and I think he feels good and he's excited to keep it going."

Powers also confirmed that he did not feel any concussion symptoms, either at the time of the impact or any time since the match ended.

The Rapids will likely count on depth in the coming months, with a match every week (and a pair of midweek games) until the World Cup break starting after the June 7 battle at FC Dallas.

Another "Snow Clasico" at Dick's Sporting Good Park?
Colorado Rapids say the game will go on

The weather forecast is calling for snow and temperatures in the mid-30s for Saturday’s scheduled showdown at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park between the Colorado Rapids and the Portland Timbers (6 pm ET, MLS Live), but Mother Nature won’t keep the sides off the field, Rapids president Tim Hinchey told MLSsoccer.com by phone on Friday afternoon.

“The referees can always make a decision if somehow they feel it’s unsafe, but that’ll be a referee decision. We think it’s going to be more than ready to be playable,” Hinchey said. “We’re really comfortable with the playing surface.”

Hinchey said the team and grounds crew felt confident, based on weather reports and heating devices below the field itself, that the field conditions shouldn’t be a hindrance on Saturday despite the snowy forecast.

    Rapids win over Vancouver

José Mari scored late, long-range goals with each foot, including a spectacular strike with his left, to give the Colorado Rapids a 2-1 win on the road against a Vancouver Whitecaps team reduced to 10 men by a controversial second-half red card to Matias Laba.
With Vancouver leading 1-0, José Mari leveled the game at one apiece in the 79th minute, using the outside of his left foot to bend an effort past David Ousted from outside the penalty area. Two minutes later, he fired the Rapids into the lead with a right-footed effort teed up by teammate Nathan Sturgis, a play on which Ousted appeared to be screened.

The sending off of Laba in the 77th minute was the key moment in the game, as the Rapids looked fairly toothless before the Argentine's dismissal. Having already booked Laba in the 54th minute, referee Ionnis Stavridis issued Laba his second yellow, this time for grabbing the ball with his hand when he thought he had been fouled. Stavridis then appeared to hesitate, perhaps forgetting the player's initial caution, before several Rapids players did the courtesy of reminding him.

Darren Mattocks had given Vancouver a deserved lead when he scored on 66 minutes, opening his 2014 account on a breakaway after Kenny Miller held up the ball before sending him in alone with a flicked pass.

In addition to the red card, Vancouver will also look back with frustration on a miss from the influentialPedro Morales in the 68th minute, as the Chilean failed to beat Colorado goalkeeper Clint Irwin, who was making his first appearance of the season, from about six yards out. On the play, Mattocks burst forward on a counter-attack before laying the ball into the path of the Designated Player.

Vancouver had other chances, too. The Whitecaps thought they had opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Mattocks poked home the rebound of a Morales shot from outside the area, but the play was correctly ruled offside. Colorado's best early chance came on 30 minutes when Deshorn Brownnarrowly missed to the right of target with a low effort that eluded Ousted before going out harmlessly for a goal kick. Gabriel Torres set the play up with a well-weighted ball over the Vancouver back line.

Irwin also came up big for the Rapids in the 36th minute, stepping out to deny Mattocks after the Jamaican was sent through alone on the left by a penetrating Morales through ball. Vancouver had a penalty shout in the 39th minute, as Irwin appeared to make contact with Miller near the end line, but referee Stavridis adjudged there was no foul on the play.

The Whitecaps, now 1-1-2, are on the road next weekend against the LA Galaxy at StubHub Center on Saturday. The Rapids, rising to 2-1-1, play away again next weekend, as they travel to B

Rapids Capture Second Straight Win in Canada

The Colorado Rapids edged past injury-ridden Toronto FC 1-0 in a scrappy match at BMO Field on Saturday, thanks to Edson Buddle's 99th career MLS goal.
Buddle stroked home a low finish after a quick series of passes by the Rapids landed at the US forward's feet for an easy tap-in goal in the 77th minute.

Colorado started the play on the right, a cross finding substitute Dillon Serna, who switched the play to Dillon Powers. Powers took a look up, saw Buddle in the box surrounded by Toronto FC defenders and put in a well-placed pass to find his forward. Buddle slipped the ball past Julio Cesar to earn Colorado their first-ever points from a regular-season visit to Toronto.

In truth, it was an evenly contested game, with Toronto FC creating many more chances but Colorado absorbing their pressure with calmness and poise. Despite a handful of close calls, Toronto couldn't find the back of the net as the Reds clearly missed injured stars Michael Bradley and Jermain Defoe.

The first half was a relatively staid affair, both sides enjoying spells of extended possession with fluid build up but neither team finding the back of the net. Toronto created the bulk of the chances, with numerous corners and a few misplaced headers.

Steven Caldwell picked up a yellow card for handball in the 17th minute, the only card of the game, but the Rapids could not take advantage of the dangerous set piece that resulted and the two teams headed into the locker roomslevel at 0-0.

The second half was much of the same, both teams playing with positive intent but neither side getting onto the scoresheet until Buddle's late decider.

TFC came closest, with Dwayne De Rosario heading backwards off a Kyle Bekker corner kick.

Seconds later, Caldwell nearly corrected his earlier mistake with a header of his own, which went just wide.

Toronto continued to create chances as Gilberto and Jackson came alive, but Colorado held firm.

Serna entered in the 74th minute for Nathan Sturgis and he made his presence felt soon after in the build-up to the game's only goal. Toronto tried to find an answer in the remaining 15 minutes through a series of corners and free kicks, but couldn't reply in kind, giving Colorado a valuable three points away from home.

It's TFC's second loss of the season and the first at BMO Field. The Reds were without five key starters in Defoe, Bradley, Jonathan Osorio, Doneil Henry and Alvaro Rey. The win moves the Rapids into second in the Western Conference with 10 points.

Toronto FC take on FC Dallas next Saturday at Toyota Stadium. Meanwhile, the Rapids host the San Jose Earthquakes at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.
