Players would adjust, like they do to like they do to rules changing game to game.

edit: otherwise change the rule to how it's actually called.

You need a human calling That call. 3 seconds happens on every play.

I think It's hilarious how this is one of the only jobs where people have no clue of what you do yet want to tell you how to do it.

I always assumed it was defensive 3 seconds if someone puppy guarded the rim with no designated opposing player (like a zone defense in a way), offensively I just thought it was similar to the 5 second post back down rule just without the ball and in the paint.

The defensive rule its called very much like the offensive rule. If a player is in the lane for 3 seconds and is retreating at second 3, there is no reason to call three seconds because he is losing the any advantage he gained from being in the key. There's no reason to call three seconds on a player leaving the key. The second a player gains an advantage from being in the key to long is when it is called. Otherwise it's the worst call in basketball.

Then we would never see a basketball game we would just see a computer bleep fest. Stop. Go. Stop. Go. There would be no flow. Games will take a thousand years. If NBA referees did their jobs correctly they would be calling 3 secs the moment the player gained an advantage from being in the key too long.

Basketball like any team sport is so hard to call 100% or even 50% correctly. It's sad but a necessary evil to miss on half the travels, carries, goaltends and 3 second calls. Like dviss1 said... Games would take an eternity.

OK, I've play all of 2 years of organized ball, you've reffed for many years. You understand the nuance of officiating, I don't. Check. I am not questioning your authority on the matter of reffing, or understanding defense.

Buttttttt, you don't need to know one whole hell of a lot to see that players are regularly in the fucking key for 4, 5, 6 seconds or more. I don't care whether they're leaving the key or not, they should under no circumstances be in the key for 6 seconds before a shot goes up, and it isn't called.

If you don't like 3.00 seconds, then fine, have the computer call 4.0 seconds, or even 4.5 seconds. But at some point, the nuances don't matter - the refs are just plain screwing up. That is what I, many on this board, and even casual bball fans want to end. A computer could do it.

I get the 3 second advantage disadvantaged argument but I absolutely despise traveling because it always gives advantage and is just plain lame. Its like the first thing I learned to do when playing ball in grade school. Jump stops and pivot foots

That means the rule is poorly designed. Having computers replace refs would suss a lot of that out. I bet you'd find plenty of balance at 5 or 7 real seconds.

Haven't you guys ever played a basketball video game? The computer controls the whole thing, and frankly it works pretty well.

I told you guys a long time ago that NBA Refs are fucking lazy and don't do their jobs well. That just means those old dogs need to get taken out back and shot. Let the younger more athletic referees take over. It's time for a new era. Dick Bavetta was almost 80 ..... WTF?

There is something to be said for play-ground rules and call your own fouls.
